Policy Briefing and Presentation: Public Trust in Criminal Justice
On February 23, 2012, the Center for the Study of Democracy organized a presentation of a report on the Public Trust in Criminal Justice. The authors presented their analysis of the study results on the public trust in the police and courts, the public perceptions of the level of corruption in these institutions and the subjective perceptions of fear of crime in Bulgaria. more »

On 20 February 2012, the Center for the Study of Democracy held a round table entitled The Use of Wiretaps in the Investigation of Organised Crime and Corruption. The special guest was Mr. Peter Ainsworth, Senior Deputy Chief, Public Integrity Section, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice. The issues discussed were related to the problems that the Bulgarian judiciary faces in tackling issues of corruption and organized crime, especially when it comes to high-ranking officials. more »

One research institute, the Center for Study of Democracy, estimates that Bulgaria’s drug market is worth about $124 million a year and its internal sex trade about $168 million a year, while the profit from cigarette smuggling is about $436 million per year, it said.

Тhe 21st century threats from non-traditional sources need to be recognized, including cyber terrorism, links between organized crime and international terrorism, and energy security. These are threats that should be addressed proactively, as opposed to the largely reactive security policies of the 20th century and through greater engagement between developed and developing countries based on three components: security, economic opportunity, and increased rule of law and democratic governance.
