www.euronews.com Syrian opposition activists say dozens of civilians were killed in a cold blooded "massacre" over the weekend in Homs. Rebels discovered a blood-drenched room full of dead men, women and children. One group claimed at least 45 women and children had been stabbed and burned to death, in the district of Karm al-Zeitoun. The latest bloodshed came as talks between the UN/Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and Syrian President Bashar al Assad concluded without progress. Officials said there was no clear response from Assad to proposals for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid. Assad told Annan that what he called "terrorists" were blocking any political solution. But Annan told reporters he remained hopeful. "I am optimistic for several reasons. First of all I have been here for a very short period. Almost every Syrian I have met wants peace, they want the violence to stop, they want to move on with their lives," said Annan. www.euronews.com Mourners carry a coffin through the streets of Gaza of one of those killed in a weekend of violence between Palestinians and Israelis. The cross-border conflict, which flared up after an Israeli airstrike on Friday, is ongoing and the death toll is rising. As rockets continue to be fired into Israel, another four Palestinians have died in an Israeli airstrike on Monday - two militants and two civilians. Earlier in the day, two Islamic Jihad members were killed in Khan Younis, and another young Palestinian died in Beit Lahiya. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barack said: "If attacks continue, we will continue to respond. It takes patience and a standing power to overcome these challenges, but we are determined to defend our civilian citizens at any moment." Two Israelis have been wounded and buildings damaged as rockets hit the southern port city of Ashdod. There were also rocket attacks on the neighbouring city of Beersheba. Show of strength as Chavez returns from Cuban cancer treatment President Hugo Chavez received a hero's welcome as he rallied thousands of supporters upon his return to Venezuela, vowing to beat cancer after undergoing surgery in Cuba. Wearing the combat fatigues and red beret of his army days, Mr Chavez projected strength as he spoke from the balcony of the presidential palace on Monday, waving to the crowd below and raising a fist. The President, whose three-week absence spurred a flurry of rumours about the seriousness of his health problems, delivered a signature performance. "We will also win this battle for life," he said. "We will live! We will be victorious!" Nonetheless, signs of Mr Chavez's fragile health peeked through the stagecraft. At one point, the 56-year-old leader grimaced with apparent discomfort as he struggled to wave his country's yellow, blue and red flag above his head. The flag ended up awkwardly draping over his scalp, until Mr Chavez emerged with an embarrassed smile from the fabric. His surprise return in the small hours of Monday morning was signature Chavez and sent a powerful message that he remains in control. While he was away in Cuba, uncertainty swirled in Venezuela, both about how sick he was and what would happen if cancer were to force him from power.

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY ALYSSA CARTEE ANCHOR NATHAN BYRNE After a second round of talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the UN's Envoy Kofi Annan leaves without a peace deal. CBS reports their first discussion, held earlier this week didn't seem to make progress. "Annan appeared to make little headway in his first round of talks with Assad on Saturday, when the Syrian president said rejected any political dialogue as long as 'terrorist' groups would continue to try to destabilize the country." "Mr. Annan acknowledged it would be difficult for president Assad and other opposition groups to try to reach a deal to finally halt all of that bloodshed." Even though the political leaders didn't reach a deal, Annan told reporters he was "optimistic" about progress made during the trip. But MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell says the talks might have been useless. "I think these talks went nowhere basically. ... He is very much against military action, and by saying that he was trying to negotiate a political solution where everyone would put down their weapons immediately upset the rebel forces." During the visit, violence in the country increased substantially. Euronews reports more Syrians are fleeing the country. "The army has shifted its attention to the other rebel stronghold of Idlib. An official from the Turkish government has stated almost 200 Syrians have crossed into Turkey fleeing the violence in Idlib." But it's not just Assad's troops who have been more active ...
