1964 Teisco WG-4L
This chunk of Oriental firewood might just be the ultimate electric slide guitar and here's why: it can get both JB Hutto AND Hound Dog Taylor sounds - 'nuff said. Actually the range of sounds (from various flavors of Fender-with-severe-nasal-congestion to the complete Black&Decker power tools catalog, and everything in between) this Rodan of the guitar world can produce is truly astounding, but it would require a 30 minute video to properly demonstrate them all...but when it comes to open-tuned electric slide guitar (see, I leave Earl Hooker and Robert Nighthawk in their own category of greatness) this contender for "most dubious headstock shape" will cover Airline-era Hutto, the Hound, and various permutations of Elmore.

Davey Williams on Roulette TV Part 1
Emerging from the 1970's avant-garde scene in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, guitarist Davey Williams developed his unique style independently from so-called "centers of culture". Williams, author of the shortest novel in the world "Peanut" which is also the only word in the text, possesses a kind of surreal native southerner's sensibility which permeates the humor and freewheeling improvisation of his performances both as a soloist and as a member of early bands like Blue Denim Deals Without The Arms and Ron 'Pate's Debonairs, and the more recent Curlew and Numb Right Thumb, as well as his work with LaDonna Smith, John Corbett, and many other avantgardists. In his music, skillfully played authentic soul music and Delta blues slide guitar riffs occupy an equal position with sound explorations beyond any category -- he may use the historic bottleneck slide on his "object guitar" and follow that with an egg beater, a toy mouse, a wind-up dinosaur, metal rasps, or a six-foot long metal girder, and modifying electronics. This has an enormously appealing effect. To quote his website: "greatness of humor or artistic ability is no different from the greatness of parents' love (or any other sort of love), or a cloud formation, or an automotive repair". Williams opens his Roulette TV performance with an intriguing rendition of Delta blues-like bottleneck guitar riffs in a gritty timbre that are steadily modulated into an impressionistic keening filled with fleeting references to southern <b>...</b>

The Allman Brothers Band ~ Old Friend (2003)
The Allman Brothers Band ~ Old Friend (2003)
The Allman Brothers Band is an American rock band once based in Macon, Georgia. The band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, organ, songwriting), who were supported by Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums). While the band has been called the principal architects of Southern rock, they also incorporate elements of blues, jazz, and country music, and their live shows have jam band-style improvisation and instrumental songs. The band achieved its artistic and commercial breakthrough in 1971 with the release of At Fillmore East, featuring extended renditions of their songs "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post" and often considered one of the best live albums ever made. George Kimball of Rolling Stone magazine hailed them as "the best damn rock and roll band this country has produced in the past five years." A few months later, group leader Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident. The group survived that and the death of bassist Oakley in another motorcycle accident a year later; with replacement members Chuck Leavell and Lamar Williams, the Allman Brothers Band achieved its peak commercial success in 1973 with the album Brothers and Sisters and the hit single "Ramblin' Man". Internal turmoil overtook the band soon after; the group dissolved in 1976, reformed <b>...</b>

Pinetop Perkins -- How Long Blues
Pinetop Perkins -- How Long Blues
July 7, 1913 - March 21, 2011--Pinetop Perkins began playing blues in the late 1920s, and was widely regarded as one of the best -- and certainly most enduring -- blues pianists. He forged a style that influenced three generations of piano players, and continues to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured. Born Willie Perkins in Belzoni, Mississippi in 1913, Pinetop started out playing guitar and piano at house parties and honky-tonks, but dropped the guitar in the 1940s after sustaining a serious injury in his left arm. He worked primarily in the Mississippi Delta throughout the 1930s and '40s, spending three years with Sonny Boy Williamson on the King Biscuit Time radio show on KFFA in Helena, Arkansas. Pinetop also toured extensively with slide guitar player Robert Nighthawk and backed him on an early Chess session. After briefly working with BB King in Memphis, Perkins barnstormed the South with Earl Hooker during the early '50s. The pair completed a session for Sam Phillips' famous Sun Records in 1953. It was at this session that he recorded his version of "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie," a song originally written and recorded by pianist Clarence "Pinetop" Smith -- the influential blues pianist who had died from a gunshot wound at age 24 in 1929. Although referred to as "Pinetop" when he played on King Biscuit in the 40s, it was his sensational version of this song that secured his lifelong nickname. Although he has enjoyed success as a solo artist since <b>...</b>

Guitar String Bending Technique
Guitar String Bending Technique
Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question about bending technique... "I looked through all of your videos and could not find one about bending. Id like to see you do a video all about bending technique." Thanks, Doug - San Diego, CA. USA Bending guitar strings with excellent technique, style and accuracy involves work on three important areas: 1). Bend Types: There are two categories here; Standard Bends and Pre-Bends. Each category has sub-categories, such as, (but not limited to), sustain and release concepts. 2). Pitch Accuracy: Bending a note to a wrong note is still a wrong note. However, tweaking notes out of pitch for short durations, (as in; 1/4 or 3/4 increments), can yield very interesting effects. 3). Practice Exercises: In order to achieve great results with bending, players need to practice various bend styles as well as, pitch accuracy. The instructional video contains solid explanations of all of the above points. The complete lesson article for this video is available on the Creative Guitar Studio website.
