NATO - Together Against Improvised Explosive Devices
In the framework of a trial organized by the NATO Air Force Armaments Group and partly subsidized by NATO's defence against terrorism programme, 17 nations tested NATO's intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance arrangements. How to use IEDs in ACE 1.9 RC3 for Arma OA
IEDs function differently in ACE than they do with vanilla Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead. In ACE the IED functionality has change and evolved over time. Here I've tested some of the latest changes in ACE version 1.9 RC3. The results offer some hints for effective IED usage; With Safety off, Tripwire, and then Bury, you have a concealed device with simultaneous options for tripwire-triggered-detonation or command-detonated.

Clearing and Detonating IED's Operation Eastern Storm Afghanistan
Marines with Engineer Support Company, 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion working in direct support of 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, to clear improvised explosive devices with mine-clearing line charges near Route 611 in Kajaki, which was laced with IEDs. Afghan residents had been forced to leave their homes due to the dangers imposed by heavy IED emplacement throughout the town and insurgent activity in the area. Marines with 1/6 are clearing insurgents from Sangin to Kajaki along Route 611 to make it safe for Afghan residents, local government officials, and coalition forces. The footage shows Marines preparing their vehicles by loading mine-clearing line charges and detonating charges to eliminate IEDs. Produced by Cpl. Bryan Nygaard, Cpl. John M. McCall.

Courage of fallen IED soldier praised 27.03.12
A soldier returned to an alleyway three times to deal with IEDs before a bomb detonated causing fatal injuries, an inquest heard today. Captain Lisa Jade Head, of 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, the Royal Logistic Corps, lost her limbs in the blast in an alleyway in Helmand Province on 18th April 2011. The 29-year-old, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, was flown home and treated in hospital in Birmingham, where she died the next day. Cpl Tucker told the inquest that he and Capt Head had gone to the alleyway in Nahr-e-Saraj after reports of a suspicious device being found there. He said Capt Head defused one Improvised Explosive Device before retreating to a safe distance. She returned into the alleyway with a colleague to take photographs when a second device partially exploded, resulting in no injuries. Cpl Tucker said: "I asked Captain Head over and over again if she was happy to continue and being a stubborn Yorkshire woman as she was, she was quite happy to continue." The soldier said Capt Head returned into the alleyway again and a third device detonated. Cpl Tucker said he grabbed a weapon, medical kit and metal detector to search down to Capt Head but, when the dust cleared, he realised there was no time to search safely. "We took the risk and ran down to Captain Head," he said. "On arrival to Captain Head, we realised she was a quadruple amputee and time was limited." He described how he and a colleague applied at least nine tourniquets and field ...

Countering the threat of improvised explosive devices
After a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is clear that the improvised explosive device (IED) had produced the same level of casualties as artillery did in the previous century, explained Lieutenant General Michael Barbero, the director of the Pentagon's Joint Improvised Explosive Devise Defeat Organization, in a speech to the IISS. However, he went on to argue that the IED threat extends well beyond the battlefield. During 2011, almost 600 IED events per month occurred outside of Iraq and Afghanistan. The IED is the weapon of choice for the overlapping consortium of networks -- criminal, insurgent, and terrorist alike. The global, enduring nature of the IED threat must be met with a coherent and focused approach that collaboratively seeks solutions across the whole-of-government, not just military and security forces.

IED Attacks from Wikileaks Afghanistan War Logs
IED Attacks as documented in the data leak by from Julian Assange's Wikileaks overlaid on a NATO map of the area. The green explosions are ones in which no one was hurt, yellow ones are injuries only, and red ones are fatal IEDs. On the death and injury tallies, the left column is friendlies (including both allied forces and civilians), and the right column is so-called "enemies". BACKGROUND: A massive leak of over 90-thousand secret US military files has exposed cover-ups over the war in Afghanistan. The classified documents were handed to three newspapers by the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks by Julian Assange. They include reports on the deaths of hundreds of civilians, increased Taliban attacks, as well as NATO fears Pakistan and Iran are backing the insurgency. MEANWHILE: DEMOCRATS DEEPLY DIVIDED OVER AFGHAN WAR A vote by the House of Representatives on emergency funding for the war in Afghanistan has revealed eroding support for President Barack Obama's war policy among members of his own Democratic Party. There were 102 Democrats voting against the $33 billion in war funding. That's more than three times the number of Democrats who voted against a similar funding bill in June 2009. Man caught with grenades and IEDs at ministerial briefing in Abuja
A middle aged man identified as John Akpabu was today arrested at the National Press Centre, Radio House Abuja, during a ministerial briefing, armed with 37 rounds of live ammunition, 3 hand grenades and other explosives. The man was arrested by security operatives as he tried to gain entrance into the Radio House, venue of the month-long programme where ministers are showcasing their performance records. The suspect said he was given the bag by a woman to deliver to someone in Abuja, and on getting to Abuja he discovered that the bag contained the explosive materials and he brought it to Radio House to give it back to the woman.

UK troops in major op to clear IEDs 21.03.12
Nearly 1000 British soldiers have joined a major operation to clear insurgents from a Taliban heartland. The troops joined forces with 1000 soldiers from the Afghan National Army in Operation Now Roz, or "New Day". Not a single casualty was taken. The purpose of the three-day mission was to clear the enemy from the area around Yakchal, in the Nahr-e-Saraj district. The Afghan troops detained two key IED makers and made safe 44 IEDS. They also found seven bomb-making factories, and discovered over 145kg of homemade explosives, 18 mines, 18 pressure-plate switches and 12 directional fragmentation charges. The ANSF also found another five weapon caches with mortar battles and ammunition, five rocket-propelled grenades, long-barrelled weapons and grenades. The most exceptional discovery was a Taliban command compound - seeded with IEDS rigged to detonate the building if the compound was raided. British involvement came from the Queen's Royal Hussars, the 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and 2nd Battalion the Rifles, as well as Armoured Infantry troops from 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment in Warrior armoured vehicles. Soldiers from the 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment deployed in their role to advise the police involved in the operation, while the ANA Reconnaissance Tolay (Company) and the Brigade Reconnaissance Force, manned by soldiers from the Queen's Dragoon Guards and 1st Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment, struck at insurgent targets to the ...

Syrian IED attack - Inside a Syrian Bomb Maker's Lab
Syria rebels are turning to IEDs, mirroring the insurgency in Iraq. There is an increase in the numbers of suicide bombing attacks on government and security forces, and now an element separate from the Free Syrian Army, the Daoud brigade, are making their own bombs. The brigade posted videos of their attacks on YouTube. CNN's Arwa Damon reports. Visit us at www.jieddo.mil Follow us on Twitter at http Become our friend on Facebook www.facebook.com
