If you follow Meinl Cymbals' activities online, then by now you have almost certainly seen our posts and our teaser trailer for the Clyde Stubblefield and John 'Jabo' Starks interview/documentary we did that we are releasing in multiple webisodes. If you haven't seen any of these updates, then here is a brief synopsis.
At virtually the same time, my colleague Norbert Saemann and I both had the exact same idea. That idea was to get Meinl Cymbal artists and the two original James Brown drummers, Clyde Stubblefield and John Jabo Starks together in one room, and sit them down for a long interview. We wanted to have a Meinl Cymbal artist who has been greatly influenced by Clyde and Jabo to act as the moderator and to present the questions. We chose Robert 'Sput' Searight of Snarky Puppy for obvious reasons. One listen to Sput's playing and it's completely obvious that Clyde and Jabo have made a huge impression on him and his drumming.
And so it was that we all gathered together in Nashville, Tennessee at S.I.R. in the big room, to have Clyde, Jabo, and Sput play some drums, do a lot of Q&A;, and eat some good bar-b-q! Sput really did his homework for this project, I have to say. He knew the history of these two guys and he asked some great questions. But even Sput was surprised by some of their answers, as were Norbert and I. There were some facts that Clyde and Jabo laid on Sput, that none of us knew. This was both cool to hear, but in retrospect it was sad to consider. The fact that everything there is to know about Clyde and Jabo isn't already out there in print or online for mass edification, and that everyone doesn't know it already, is a testimonial to the crime in all of this. Without being too dramatic about it, it is sad to think that with the enormous impact that both Clyde and Jabo have had on modern drumming as we know it today, that there is still more to learn about them that hasn't been put out there already. This wasn't surprising to me or Norbert. Of course, this is the sole reason why we both had the idea to tackle this project. When James Brown said "give the drummer some," he meant it, although symbolically the rest of the world hasn't always sat up and taken notice.
So here we are with episode number one. Stay tuned for further episodes.

Welcome to part two of our legendary Meinl interview and documentary with Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks. And thanks to Trevor Lawrence Jr. for the wonderful prologue.
I hope that you have enjoyed watching the first episode, and welcome to part two of our legendary Meinl interview and documentary featuring the Funkmasters Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks.
In this episode Clyde and Jabo talk about two of the undoubtedly most popular James Brown songs ever: The first one being 'Sex Machine' which Jabo recorded with James Brown. "Can I count it off" -- "Can I take it to the bridge" will always be associated with that legendary song. Jabo tells us all about these phrases and how they came along. It is interesting to see how big his influence as a drummer has been on the composition of 'Sex Machine'.
The second one being 'The Funky Drummer', performed by Clyde Stubblefield, which is one of the most frequently sampled rhythms ever used in Hip Hop and popular music. Clyde talks about the recording of that tune, why the track got called 'Funky Drummer', and more interesting facts about it.
And then there is a great story about a big surprise during a flight to Africa, plus much more.

The longer the interview lasted Clyde and Jabo started to feel more comfortable and therefore opened up more and more. This episode covers many different topics about their time with James Brown: Being used for recordings, talking about the life on the road with James, financial circumstances on tour, demanding respect, equipment trucks and tour busses, and dealing with James Brown's managers. I had to watch it several times in order to get all the little things they say here.

James Brown
James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer and bandleader. The founding father of funk music and a major figure of 20th century popular music and dance, he is often referred to as the "Godfather of Soul". In a career that spanned six decades, Brown influenced the development of several music genres.
Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia. Joining an R&B vocal group called the Avons that later evolved to become the Flames, Brown served as the group's lead singer. First coming to national public attention in the late 1950s as a member of the singing group the Famous Flames with the hit ballads "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", Brown built a reputation as a tireless live performer with the Famous Flames and his backing band, sometimes known as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. Brown's success peaked in the 1960s with the live album Live at the Apollo and hit singles such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". During the late 1960s, Brown moved from a continuum of blues and gospel-based forms and styles to a profoundly "Africanized" approach to music-making that influenced the development of funk music. By the early 1970s, Brown had fully established the funk sound after the formation of the J.B.s with records such as "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" and "The Payback". Brown also became notable for songs of social commentary, including the 1968 hit "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud". Brown continued to perform and record until his death in 2006 from congestive heart failure.

The fact that everything there is to know about Clyde and Jabo isn't already out there in print or online for mass edification, and that everyone doesn't know it already, is a testimonial to the crime in all of this. Without being too dramatic about it, it is sad to think that with the enormous impact that both Clyde and Jabo have had on modern drumming as we know it today, that there is still more to learn about them that hasn't been put out there already. This wasn't surprising to me or Norbert. Of course, this is the sole reason why we both had the idea to tackle this project. When James Brown said "give the drummer some," he meant it, although symbolically the rest of the world hasn't always sat up and taken notice.
So here we are with episode number one. Stay tuned for further episodes.

James Brown, the “hardest working man in show business” redefined soul music with his emphasis on the funk beat and his style would be copied, sampled, and stolen, by many who followed. But his legacy was tarnished by charges of drug use, wife beating, and a police chase that landed him in prison. This is a story I did when he was in prison about his descent into drug use and features footage of some of his bizarre behavior, and a retelling of the police chase by the cops involved. It also contains an interview with boyhood friend & band member Bobby Byrd describing how Brown cheated him out of royalties.

James Brown, the “hardest working man in show business” redefined soul music with his emphasis on the funk beat and his style would be copied, sampled, and stolen, by many who followed. But his legacy was tarnished by charges of drug use, wife beating, and a police chase that landed him in prison. This is a story I did when he was in prison about his descent into drug use and features footage of some of his bizarre behavior, and a retelling of the police chase by the cops involved. It also contains an interview with boyhood friend & band member Bobby Byrd describing how Brown cheated him out of royalties.

Vinnie Colaiuta Drum Clinic - Chicago
Vinnie Colaiuta is an American drummer based in Los Angeles. Originally from Republic, Pennsylvania, he began playing drums as a child and received his first full drum kit from his parents at the age of fourteen. He is notable for his technical skill and his musical versatility, having played with many artists from a wide variety of genres.
After attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston for a year, Colaiuta had his first big break as a member of the Christopher Morris Band in 1976-1977. Playing and recording with the Christopher Morris Band (MCA 2282) in 1977, Colaiuta relocated with the band to Los Angeles. After leaving the Christopher Morris Band, he made a mediocre living playing with lounge bands. His next break came in April 1978 at the age of 22, when Colaiuta auditioned for Frank Zappa, an audition that involved performing the notoriously difficult piece entitled "The Black Page". The audition was successful and Colaiuta went on to work with Zappa as his principal drummer for studio and live performances. He played on the successful Zappa albums Tinsel Town Rebellion, Joe's Garage, and Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar. Joe's Garage was named one of the top-25 drumming performances of all time in a 1993 Modern Drummer article.
