democracynow.org - The CIA's drone campaign targeting suspected militants in Pakistan has killed dozens of civilians who had gone to rescue victims or were attending funerals. So concludes a new report by the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism. It found that since President Obama took office three years ago, as many as 535 civilians have killed, including more than 60 children. The investigation also revealed that at least 50 civilians were killed in follow-up strikes when they had gone to help victims. More than 20 civilians have also been attacked in deliberate strikes on funerals and mourners. We speak to Chris Woods, award-winning reporter with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. "We noted that there were repeated reports at the time, contemporaneous reports in publications like New York Times, news agencies like Reuters, like CNN, that there were these strikes on rescuers, that there were reports of an initial strike and then some minutes later, as people had come forward to pull out the dead and injured that drones had returned to the scene and attacked rescues," Woods says, "We have been able to name just over 50 civilians that we understand have been killed in those attacks. In total, we think that more than 75 civilians have been killed specifically in these attacks on rescuers and on mourners, on funeral-goers." www.euronews.com The UN and Arab League's special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, has met President Bashar al-Assad to call for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict. Syrian state TV said the meeting in Damascus took place in a "positive atmosphere". It came a day after government forces are said to have killed more than 70 people across Syria, mainly in Homs and the northern province of Idlib. Last week the UN's refugee agency said neighbouring Lebanon had received more than 1500 people, mostly women and children, who'd crossed the border from Syria fleeing the violence. One hospital in northern Lebanon has witnessed a steady flow of wounded arriving from Syria: 180 in February, almost another 40 this month. Some say they dare not seek treatment in Syrian hospitals because they claim security forces seek out opponents of the regime among the injured and kill them. Kofi Annan was also expected to call on President Assad to allow access for humanitarian aid. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

The conversation though, seems to confirm that the group has splintered and no longer has a unified chain of command. Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder has this exclusive report.

The Senate has begun deliberations on the National Defense Authorization Act, which would authorize $682 billion for military personnel, weapons systems, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and national security programs in the energy department. But the controversy is the provision that would put detention of terrorist suspects in the military's hands, including allowing for the indefinite detention of American citizens, and mandating it for non-citizens. BOMBARDAMENTO AEREO ISRAELIANO SU GAZA Due palestinesi assassinati in attacco aereo israeliano su Gaza. The Leftist former Prime Minister has gained much support pledging to tax the rich and better protect the working classes in the country which is facing high unemployment and economic turmoil. The election - in the euro zone's second poorest country - has been called two years early after the coalition collapsed when one of its junior members refused to back the expansion of the euro zone's bailout fund. Fico will be helped by the decision of popular Prime Minister Iveta Radicova to resign the leadership of the Slovak Democratic Union. The new leader of the centre-right party, Mikulas Dzurinda, looks set to lose his seat at the top table and faces being voted out of parliament. There is great upset in the country following the apparent leak of a secret service file codenamed "Gorilla" in December. It claimed to show bugged conversations between top politicians and businessmen in which they discuss kickbacks in return for the sale of public companies. Tens of thousands of angry Slovaks took to the streets in the aftermath of the leak. Many voters are said to be disillusioned by corruption in the country. Analysts estimate a record low turnout of around 40 per cent, a factor which should also help Fico. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

www.euronews.com In Greece, Thursday was deadline day for a bond swap offer to private creditors. If more than two-thirds accept it it will lead to the release of a 130 billion euros in bailout funds to save the Greek economy. Hours ahead of the 21:00 CET deadline, holders of nearly 57 percent of the total 206 billion euros in outstanding debt were already committed. They included major banks and pension funds. "This recapitalisation will be significant and will be necessary as to allow the Greek banking system to extend credit again to the real economy," said Plato Monokroussos, Head of Financial Markets Research at Eurobank, Athens. It is in the real economy that the money is desperately needed. New unemployment figures released on Thursday showed Greece's jobless total reached a record 21 percent of the workforce in December. Severe budget cuts have caused a wave of business closures and bankruptcies. Greece's problems are so severe, it has no credibility to raise money directly from the international financial markets. Analysts say the bond swap is the only way Athens can stave off a default. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com
