PzB AUTUMN OFFENSIVE REPORT #1

Grenadiers! The initial phase of the Autumn Offensive has now been completed with the securing of all twenty primary objectives. This swift success is attributable in the main to the rapid deployment of available resources & a significant strength in reserve. You will be heartened to know that planning is already underway for the next phase of aural attacks, & your patience in the meantime is appreciated whilst the necessary preparations are being made.

It is worthy of note that on the twenty sixth of September the verified hit rate increased from a daily average of fifty, to a staggering one hundred & seventy two in total for that twenty four hour period. I believe that this two hundred percent increase is due greatly to the increased external support of our allies operating in other areas. Their efforts have been fully recognised & will be duly rewarded in time.

There are those amongst you that will have already been rewarded for your loyalty & service, & I am most grateful for the kontributions that you have made to the operational history of the PzB thus far. I sincerely hope that your actions will serve as an inspiration for others to act in a similarly selfless & respectful manner.

Stand easy, but remain forever vigilant...

Field Marshal Badger

We are staring it straight in the face."

IN MEMORY OF CLIFF BURTON

Twenty five years ago today Metallica took to the stage in Stockholm. A few hours later their tour bus crashed & Cliff Burton was killed. I'm not going to paw over the if, but or maybe of that incident, many have done so already with greater coherence than I could achieve at this moment, but I will say that Clifford Lee Burton was one of the greatest bass players that ever lived, & I don't think there can be very much doubt about that at all. The testimony of his unique talent is preserved in the bass solo work 'Anesthesia', & all the subsequent performed renditions of it throughout his career.
I remember reading somewhere that it was he who took the Metallica songwriting & arrangement to another level, teaching them of how melodies work & interact. For me, 'Master Of Puppets' was, & still is, the highest point reached in their history. Nothing I have heard them produce since has come close to it, although I have to admit that I haven't heard any new Metallica material for years... & nor do I particularly care too. '...& Justice For All' was the greatest let down to put it mildly... Y'know, I couldn't give a rats knacker for imported snare drums & however many days getting the sound 'right', I've heard dogs puking that sound better than that LP... The first three LP's are where it's at, 'original & best'... Not unlike the man himself.

So in way of a tribute I lay before thee not one,
but three recordings that are wholly Burton-centric...

METALLICA - MEGAFORCE DEMO'83
This was the first studio recording Cliff made with Metallica. Known as the 'Megaforce Demo' as it was this recording that alledgedly drew the attention of the record company bearing the same name. As you will no doubt be aware, this is in the pre-Hammett era, & so the lead guitarist on the two featured tracks is none other than Dave Mustaine...

01 Whiplash
02 No Remorse

METALLICA - SAN FRANCISCO 05.03.83
This is Cliff's first Metalli-gig, recorded on a reel-to-reel by the band themselves. I wonder if this ever appeared on Crapster for downloading? Once again Dave Mustaine features on lead guitar, even treating us to a widdle up & down his frets for a bit all on his own. I know what it's like trying to get a legible sound out of a geetar using humble paws, but the boy did good for a Cocker Spaniel.

DOOM - SPACE GORE REHEARSAL

This rehearsal recording features the members of Doom under the guise of 'Space Gore'. I know only that this was recorded around the time of Doom's first gig, & that the tracks featured here, besides the Discharge cover, are not in the vein of their primary outfit. You may be surprised to hear the Psychedelic Space Rock groove of this Brummie 'doss band', their moniker & Hawkwind cover kinda give that away. Being a staunch Hawkwind fan myself makes this all the more interesting, & to be honest they could've easily have entertained the drop-outs in many a festival tent had they chosen to continue treading this particular path. I ain't too excited about the 'Reggae Song' though, but I'm sure some Festi-Skankers would've got on down to it in a dishevelled fashion. If you know anything else about this, or other recordings, any gigs they may have played etc, please leave a komment. Whatever though, this is another PzB exclusive posting that you won't find anywhere else.
Now turn on, tune in & doom out...

FILTHKICK - QUEENS HALL WISBECH 26.01.91

This is fairly decent recording of Filthkick bashing heads in the Fens of East Anglia, & is the soundtrack of a video received a while ago from an old friend from back in those days. I was there that night & this is as great as I remember, in fact the three times I saw Filthkick they were killer. Although I have to admit that I felt that the direction they were heading in by 'Hand Crushed Heart' was woeful, the renditions of those latter tracks featured here however, are in the vein that makes me a very happy Badger indeed. It's one thing to have an idea & the desire to be progressive, but the anger & intensity of Leggo's vocal style before the aforementioned release was, & is, perfect for the vehicle that carried his words forth. If it ain't broke don't fix it... & if one outfit from back in the day should reform to tell us all to go fuck ourselves it should be Filthkick.

LÄRM - WARZONE COMPILATION TRAX

Originally traded under the title of 'The Complexity Of Life' demo, these blasts of Dutch noise are to be found on the 'End The War Zone' Compilation Split EP. Well at least I reckon that that is were they were assembled, as any investigations made about the aforementioned demo have drawn a blank. So seeing as the only legible information that matched the track list was found here I've decided that, unless proved otherwise, this is the featured EP tracks & not a demo as such.

02 Only Reality
03 Haagse Mafia
04 O.S.L

VENOM - ARAGON BALLROOM CHICAGO U.S.A. 05.04.85

"Welcome To Fuckin' Hell Chicago..."
It's those hell raising Geordies known as Lant, Dunn & Bray abusing an all too expectant Stateside crowd on the first leg of the 'World Possession Tour'. If you're not up to speed with the significance of this show, past its sharing the date with the Deviated Instinct live recording below, then I've taken the liberty of reproducing a paragraph or two from the truly obsessive 'Venom Collector' website... Why should I attempt to re-write history eh?
The North-american tour began disastrously for the band. The first inkling of trouble occurred shortly before the band were due to fly out to Canada when Mantas fell seriously ill with a mixture of glandular fever & chicken pox. Scheduled shows were immediately postponed for two weeks [the gap between the Canadian and American dates effectively reduced to zero] but Mantas' condition worsened, leaving the band with no option but to play the shows with stand-in guitarists, both local Newcastle lads, Les Cheetham [Avenger] & Dave Irwin [Fist]. Couple this calamity with immigration hassles, last minute permits for the new boys, & only 48 hours rehearsal & you can understand why the Venom road show trundled off to a fairly subdued and severely dispirited start. Nevertheless, the actual shows in Canada, all held in large 3 000-4 000 seaters, proved to be real killers, drawing a remarkable reaction from both band [determined not to blow it] & audience, even though there had been literally no time to inform the fans of the line-up shuffle prior to the actual gigs themselves!
Mantas should have arrived in New York, ready to hitch up with the band & play, at perhaps the most strangest & possibly prestigous gig of the tour - Studio 54, the most famous disco hall in the world, which was popularised by the movie, Saturday Night Fever. Located in the heart of Manhattan, within vomiting distance of Empire State Building, the club had just been opened as a rock venue with Venom the first band to play there. But, although his illness had been overcome, he was the victim of a massive clerical balls-up instigated by HM Government over the whereabouts of his passport. In short he was stranded back in Newcastle & was not back in business until two days later for the gig in Chicago on April 5th. All in all Venom played 13 concerts on this tour between March 24 & April 28, 4 gigs in Canada and 9 in USA. Unfortunatley the crowd was not exposed to the mayhem the band has prepared for because there was not enough stage space to accomodate the exorbitant amount of lightning and pyro, so sacrifices were to be grudgingly made at almost every show.

DEVIATED INSTINCT - U.E.A.BARN NORWICH 05.04.85

I'll put my paw on my heart & confess that this is, or at least was, available elsewhere on the www.  I downed this fine quality recording of pre-first demo D.I. many moons ago. I don't remember from exactly where it was foraged from but it's probably still out there...
"For anyone that might be intrigued to hear some super early pre-crust/metal Deviated Instinct when we were just a fairly basic & straightforward anarchopunk sounding band,  I've just discovered a full live set from 1985 online free to download. Decent quality recording, can't say the same about the actual playing but hey, we were but young un's & I think it captures the moment & spirit of the time..."

SPINE WRENCH - HOME RECORDINGS

I'll put my paw on my heart & say that, presently at least, this is not available anywhere else on the www. Created at home in his boudoir by Mr.Middleton, these home recordings are a sketchbook like 4-track scribble of ideas. Track 02 is a definite early working of 'Tapping The Vein' but the rest are a hotch potch of doodles in sound that will at times undoubtedly surprise you.

BAIT - DEMO'98

I feel that this should require little or no introduction, but if you're unsure, this is Mid & Snapa, & this is Bait... The logical aftermath of Spine Wrench. The download folder contains scans of the fabulous full colour cover & also the actate/transparency overlay.
A work of art if not of genius.

PROPHECY OF DOOM - PEEL SESSION [EP]

This is a vinyl rip so unfortunately no pearls of wisdom from Mr.Peel, but ya do get all four tracks with added static. If anyone would be kind enough to lavish me with a colour high-res scan [300dpi preferred] of the cover art for this Strange Fruit release I would be more than a happy Badger. There's a PzB T-shirt in it for whoever can get it here first.

RHETORIC - MOSH TROSH & GUZZLE DEMO'87

This is the first demo by the then Great Yarmouth based Troshers known as Rhetoric, & the only proper recording I have with the original vocalist Jim.
