www.euronews.com Greece has avoided an immediate catastrophic default on its debt after private creditors strongly backed a plan that leaves the path clear for a new international bailout. The Finance Ministry in Athens says well over 80 percent of private creditors have agreed to a bond swap deal. Under the rules, the unwilling minority may be forced to accept it. The result should mean that Greece receives 130 billion euros from the EU, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund. "It is more than expected I think and I think it is a resounding success. It is very important, not the transaction 'per se', but the fact that this is the beginning of the restoration of confidence in the economy," said financial analyst Michalis Massourakis. In order to cut the national debt drastically, private investors are accepting huge losses in exchange for new bonds. On the streets, some are angry at what they see as one rule for the government, another for ordinary people. "They chase people for owing 100 euros to a bank, yet those who owe billions are exempt? Aren't they ashamed of themselves? I spit on them," said one man. "It's good for them. What about for us? Nothing! Everyone looks out for himself. In a while people will be on the streets. Do you know there are more than 2000 homeless?" said another. The unemployment rate is twice the eurozone average; more than half of young people are out of work. Take action at Amnestyusa.org Anti-Flag "This Is The New Sound" from the album "The General Strike", out March 20th, 2012 on Sideonedummy Records. Store.sideonedummy.com "This Is The New Sound" video was shot at the historic Ohio State Reformatory, the same prison where Shawshank Redemption was filmed. Amnesty International is teaming with Pittsburgh-based rock band Anti-Flag to speak out against indefinite detention, premiering the group's new music video, "This is the New Sound." Amnesty International and Anti-Flag have worked together on a number of important human rights causes, taking campaigns on tour with the band in the United States and overseas. "The erosion of human rights should always be taken seriously," said Anti-Flag band members. "We wanted to find a creative and clever way to introduce these ideas into the discourse about our new record, 'The General Strike.' This video is a culmination of that idea. Sure, maybe we will talk about how funny it is to see puppets beating the hell out of us, but we'll also discuss the fact that people are being held in prisons, without fair trials, and President Obama's promise to shut down Guantánamo Bay remains unfulfilled." The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) makes it more likely that anyone -- including US citizens -- could be held indefinitely without charge or fair trial. A person could be like Shaker Aamer, who has been held by the US government at Guantánamo Bay detention center for more than 10 years ...

Senegalese singer Baaba Maal has visited Mauritanian communities at the center of the current food crisis in the Sahel, to call attention to the humanitarian need there. Low rainfall, poor harvests, a lack of pasture and rising food prices are among the key factors driving this crisis, which now affects one in four people across the country. Today 700000 people are food insecure in Mauritania. More on Oxfam's response to West Africa food crisis www.oxfam.org

From: www.youtube.com December 21, 2011 - The European Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a bill to include the aviation industry into the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). The European Parliament adopted the bill in late 2008, and it's set to take effect on January 1st 2012. China is among the many countries that oppose the tax. Christmas and New Year usually bring cheer to the airline industry. But now is no time for celebration. All carriers flying to and from Europe are forced to buy carbon credit starting on January 1st. But experts have raised questions over the legality of this policy. Nie Ying, legal advisor of China National Aviation Holding Company, said, "The EU have the right to enforce its own laws within the European Union, but if it forces non-European countries to abide by the law, it runs the risk of breaching sovereignty of other countries." And sovereignty is just part of this dispute. A free market is also at risk. Zhu Qingyu, director of Market Research Department in CATA, said, "According to their rules, now European airlines count carbon from the point of departure. That's unfair. The EU sets carbon emission quotas through force of law. This means we have no choice but to buy what they are selling. It's against free market principles." Violating free market principles comes with a price. According to CATA, 33 Chinese airlines will be affected, by an estimated 800 million yuan for the first year, and a cumulative total of 17.6 billion yuan by 2020 ...

www.euronews.com Almost a year since the tsunami in Japan, hundreds of people are still missing from the coastal town of Minamisanriku. The day before the devastating wave, 17000 people lived in Minamisanriku, the day after, only 7000. Authorities predict the reconstruction of homes and other vital buildings will take years. Dr Masahiro Shuto has been part of the relief effort in the town. "There's a lack of equipment, and there is no central hospital so we have to send patients an hour away by car. It's a real problem, especially as we have an ageing population in Japan," he said. The search for missing people continues in the fishing hamlet of Rikuzentakata, about 400 kilometres northeast of Tokyo; 2000 people disappeared after the tsunami destroyed the downtown area. "We're doing our best to find the bodies and, as far as possible, return them to their loved ones and families, but unfortunately the bodies are getting harder to find now," said police officer Daichi Kousakau Yoshida. Last year's tsunami was caused by a magnitude nine earthquake, the largest recorded in the country's history. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

KABUL -- The US is investigating allegations that some officials in the Afghan Air Force with CIA backing, which was established largely with American funds, have been using aircraft to ferry narcotics and illegal weapons around the country, American officials told The Wall Street Journal. Two probes of the Afghan Air Force, or AAF, are under way-one led by the US military coalition and another by the US Drug Enforcement Administration, officials said. "The nature of the allegations is fairly dramatic and indicated that [AAF officials] were transporting drugs on aircraft and transported weapons not owned by the government of Afghanistan for the use of private groups," said US Army Lt. Gen. Daniel Bolger, commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Training Mission-Afghanistan, the command that is establishing and financing Afghan security forces, including the AAF.
