Welcome to the Institute for Advanced Studies

Welcome

IAS BuildingThe Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) was founded in 2003 as a research centre with the primary objective of consolidating Lancaster’s position as a leading international centre of excellence in interdisciplinary research in Management, Social Sciences and the Arts and Humanities.

IAS now has a remit that covers the whole research portfolio of the University. The emphasis is on the facilitation and encouragement of multi-disciplinary approaches to significant national and international issues. It is also a forum by which the of the University can be brought to the attention of a wider range of external individuals and organizations.

It works by facilitating informal groups and debates that will consider the wide range of elements that are needed to help consider major issues as well as examine more specifically how the University should rise to the challenge of addressing them.

The activities of IAS are overseen by the Pro vice chancellor for Research and a steering group but they will be fed by ideas generated across the whole campus.
