Living (and dying) with Linux in the workplace

Filed under: Suse — tuxicity @ 9:00 pm

A Windows power user gives Linux a fair trial as her primary operating system at work. Does the open-source OS have what it takes to make her switch for good?

A evaluation on installing and using Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, replacing Windows XP

Conlusion of the writer:

“While I liked many things about my Linux desktop (look and feel, elegant command-line implementations, robust open-source apps, the whole open-source concept), I found the lack of some key applications and the occasional hardware non-plug-and-play too limiting. I’m not willing to tell Microsoft buh-bye. Not yet, anyway. But there’s enough here I like that I’m going to keep the Linux system set up, too.”

Up-to-date versions of Ubuntu and Suse 10.1 have changed the time correctly

Filed under: Suse, Ubuntu — tuxicity @ 5:38 pm

In Ontario and, indeed, in most of Canada, we jumped ahead to daylight time three weeks earlier than in past years. Thanks to an attempt in the United States to save energy, we turned our clocks ahead one hour as of 2 o’clock this morning. also Windows Vista and XP with patches applied should adjust correctly.

Whither the SUSE Exodus? Novell’s Linux Business Soars

Filed under: Novell, Suse — tuxicity @ 6:43 pm

The Open Source community has had the opportunity to be extremely vocal of late. With the Vista launch, and Dell’s IdeaStorm suggestion box website they’ve had ample chance to flex their feedback muscles. Still neither of these recent events compares to the sheer outrage that the Microsoft-Novell pact received last year. But as Novell proved last week, this was an instance of the community being more loud than correct.

Use the “CUBE” with XGL and Compiz on your Suse Laptop.

Filed under: Suse — tuxicity @ 1:11 pm

Well, I got my laptop on Friday two weeks ago. I must say, the HP Compaq nx6310 was definitely a good choice. The only thing I don’t really like is the TrueLife screen. I don’t like it because of the glare, but I suppose I’ll get used to it. Anyway, one of the first things I did was partition the drive, and install OpenSuse 10.2, 64bit version. The installation went smoothly and everything (including WLAN) worked perfect. In this workshop I want to explain the installation of the 3D cube using XGL and Compiz.

(Column) The Importance of Video Settings on Linux

Filed under: Fedora, Fedora Core, linux, Suse, Ubuntu — tuxicity @ 12:55 pm

It’s maddening. For someone who is trying make a daily use of what is to be considered a beginner friendly distribution for the first time, most options leave a lot to be desired for the uninitiated. More often than not, new Linux users find that everything works great at first only to discover that setting up something as common as a dual-head monitor configuration requires editing your xorg.conf file. If you are coming from a non-Linux environment, this can be a fairly frightening proposition.

openSUSE 10.2 to kubuntu 6.10

Filed under: Kubuntu, Suse — tuxicity @ 2:46 am

I went to suse when they where in their 8.x or 9.x releases. i loved it, I came from gentoo, suse just helped me to get the work done. strangely suse also felt a lot snappier than my tweaked-n-tuned on-the-edge gentoo install.

What’s the best Linux for resellers?

Filed under: Debian, Distributions, Fedora, Gentoo, Kubuntu, Mandriva, Novell, Red Hat, rPath, Suse, Ubuntu — tuxicity @ 2:34 am

I recently was contacted by a major Unix reseller. The company had a very simple question: with the writing on the wall for Unix growing bigger and bigger with every quarter, which Linux should they adopt?
