Hcg Diet

HCG and the HCG Diet First described as a treatment for obesity in conjunction with a very low calorie diet by Dr. A. Simeons in 1954. What is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)?  HCG is a hormone normally secreted by the trophoblastic cells of the placenta during pregnancy. What is the HCG Diet?  500 calories/day + 125 units of HCG injected six days per week for 8 weeks.  45 – 50gms protein/day What are some of the claims of HCG?  Rapid weight loss  Dramatic loss of fat in the stomach, hips, thighs, and upper arms  Minimizes hunger What are the possible side effects?  Headaches  Feeling restless or irritable  Mild swelling or water weight gain  Depression  Breast tenderness and swelling  Injection site inflammation and pain Recommendations: The British Journal of Pharmacology performed a meta-analysis review in 1995 and concluded that there is no scientific evidence supporting the claims that HCG is effective in altering a redistribution of fat, hunger reduction or in inducing a feeling of well-being. Furthermore, Of the 14 randomized studies 12 reported that the weight-loss with the use of HCG was no greater than with the use of a placebo or with the use of a diet only.

Br J Clin Pharmacol 1995; 40: 237-243 A position statement by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, made in November 2010, concludes that a 500 calorie diet is not a recommended diet for weight loss and that the use of HCG for weight loss is also not recommended.
