The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: German Expressionist Silent Horror Film (1920 Movie)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: German Expressionist Silent Horror Film (1920 Movie)
DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (German: Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari) is a 1920 silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene from a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. It is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and is often considered one of the greatest horror movies of the early times. This movie is cited as having introduced the twist ending in cinema. Jean-Marc Lofficier wrote Superman's Metropolis, a trilogy of graphic novels for DC Comics illustrated by Ted McKeever, the second of which was entitled Batman: Nosferatu, most of the plot derived from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Caligari himself appears as a member of Die Zwielichthelden (The Twilight Heroes), a German mercenary group in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill. Also, in The Sandman issue "Calliope" written by Neil Gaiman and pencilled by Kelley Jones, a character, Richard Madoc, writes a book "The Cabaret of Dr. Caligari", an obvious pseudonym. The name 'Caligari' has been used extensively in popular music. Pere Ubu has a song entitled "Caligari's Mirror". Goth rock group Bauhaus used a still of Cesare from the film on early t-shirts for their popular single "Bela Lugosi's Dead". The band Abney Park has a cut "The Secret Life of Dr. Calgari" on their album Lost Horizons (released 2008). The 1998 music video for Rob Zombie's single "Living Dead Girl" restaged several scenes from the film ...

John Malkovich 1991 Shadows And Fog Trailer
Shadows and Fog (1992) is a black and white film directed by Woody Allen and based on his one-act play Death. It stars Allen, Mia Farrow, John Malkovich, John Cusack, William H. Macy, Madonna, and Kenneth Mars. It was filmed on a 26000-square-foot (2400 m2) set at Kaufman Astoria Studios, which holds the distinction of being the biggest set ever built in New York. It was also his last film for Orion Pictures. Shadows and Fog is an homage to German Expressionist filmmakers Fritz Lang, GW Pabst and FW Murnau, and to the writer Franz Kafka. The movie begins with Kleinman (Allen) being awakened from a deep sleep by a vigilante mob. They claim to be looking for "the strangler", a serial killer who strangles his victims. They tell him to get dressed and meet them downstairs in five minutes. In a flurry, he gets dressed. Before he goes down, his landlady who wants to marry him gives him a small paper bag with pepper in it. "If The Strangler attacks you, blow some of this in his eyes!"

Destiny (1921) Weary Death- German Expressionism- Directed by Fritz Lang
Destiny (1921) Weary Death- German Expressionism- Directed by Fritz Lang
Destiny, or in the original German, Der müde Tod (Weary Death) is a 1921 silent film directed in Germany by Fritz Lang. The German language title literally means Weary Death (in the sense of personified Death); the film was originally released in the United States as Behind the Wall and in the United Kingdom as Destiny. The film, rich in special effects, is structured as a frame tale with three stories within the story. In the Expressionistic frame story, in which human lives are each represented by a candle, Death grants a woman three chances to save her lover, if love can triumph over death. The three stories within the story each occur in a setting that is nominally historic, but really in the realm of fantasy: an adventure tale with a Persian setting out of the Arabian Nights, a Renaissance Venetian romance, and a largely comic story set in China. In Germany, the film was poorly received at first, with critics complaining that it was not 'German' enough, but the film was much more successful overseas. Douglas Fairbanks purchased the American rights, to delay its general American release while he copied the effects of the Persian segment for his 1924 The Thief of Baghdad.

Schönberg - Opus 19, no. 1(1911)
Schönberg - Opus 19, no. 1(1911)
Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) 6 Kleine Kalvierstücke opus 19 (1911) Maurizio Pollini, piano After having written large, dense works such as Pelleas und Melisande, up until 1907, Schönberg decided to turn away from this style, beginning with his second string quartet of 1908. The following excerpt, translated from a letter written to Ferruccio Busoni in 1909, well expresses his reaction against the excess of the Romantic period: My goal: complete liberation from form and symbols, context and logic. Away with motivic work! Away with harmony as the cement of my architecture! Harmony is expression and nothing more. Away with pathos! Away with 24 pound protracted scores! My music must be short. Lean! In two notes, not built, but "expressed". And the result is, I hope, without stylized and sterilized drawn-out sentiment. That is not how man feels; it is impossible to feel only one emotion. Man has many feelings, thousands at a time, and these feelings add up no more than apples and pears add up. Each goes its own way. This multicoloured, polymorphic, unlogical nature of our feelings, and their associations, a rush of blood, reactions in our senses, in our nerves; I must have this in my music. It should be an expression of feeling, as if really were the feeling, full of unconscious connections, not some perception of "conscious logic". Now I have said it, and they may burn me. Interestingly, this work was composed at the same time that Schönberg was working on his orchestration ...

TRUTH. German Expressionism / Art film.
TRUTH. German Expressionism / Art film.
Basically I drew inspiration for this film through a few different experiences, especially from the past year or so. I tried to capture what it felt like, but because of time limits I had to make do with the footage I had as oppose to being able to shoot all my other symbolic and stylistic ideas. Perhaps I will come back to this film again, some time in my future and try to make it as accurate as I can, but for now this will have to do. This is quite personal and it means a fair bit to me, so I do hope you enjoy it. Nikki.

German Expressionist Appreciation Painting Huge 4 Panels
I've always had an appreciation for the German Expressionist painters. Their bold beauty and often simplistic style really call me. In this four piece art ensemble, I've honored my interest and affinity for the German works and have utilized bold colors to call upon the rememberence of the fine artists of the German Expressionist era. This new series of Art Ensembles includes multi-panel paintings which may be hung together in one group or used around the room in solo or different spaces, check my Ebay store to see my other new ART ENSEMBLES.
