Born in Paisley, Scotland, to Margaret and Edward Butler, Gerard Butler was raised along with his older brother and sister in his hometown of Paisley, Scotland. He also spent some of his youth in Canada. His parents divorced when he was a child, and he and his siblings were raised primarily by their mother, who later remarried. He had no contact with his father between the ages of two and 16 years old, after which time they became close. His father passed away when Gerard was in his early 20s. Butler went on to attend Glasgow University, where he studied to be a lawyer/solicitor. He was president of the school's law society thanks to his outgoing personality and great social skills. His acting career began when he was approached in a London coffee shop by actor 'Steven Berkoff' (qv), who later appeared alongside Butler in _Attila (2001/I) (TV)_ (qv), who gave him a role in a stage production of Coriolanus. After that Butler decided to give up law for acting. He was cast as 'Ewan McGregor' (qv)'s character Renton in the stage adaptation of Trainspotting. His film debut was as 'Billy Connolly (I)' (qv)'s younger brother in _Mrs. Brown (1997)_. While filming the movie in Scotland, he was enjoying a picnic with his mother, near the River Tay, when they heard the shouts of a young boy who had been swimming with a friend who was in some trouble. Butler jumped in and saved the young boy from drowning. He received a Certificate of Bravery from the Royal Humane Society. He felt he only did what anyone in the situation would have done. His film career continued with small roles, first in the James Bond movie _Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)_ (qv) and then 'Russell Mulcahy' (qv)'s _Tale of the Mummy (1998)_ (qv). In 2000, Butler was cast in two breakthrough roles, the first being Attila the Hun in the USA film _Attila (2001/I) (TV)_ (qv). The film's producers wanted a known actor to play the part but kept coming back to Butler's screen tests and decided he was their man. He had to lose the thick Scottish accent, but managed well. Around the time Attila was being filmed, casting was in progress for 'Wes Craven' (qv)'s new take on the Dracula legacy. Also wanting a known name, Butler wasn't much of a consideration. His unending tenacity and drive drove him to hounding the producers. Eventually, he sent them a clip of his portrayal of Attila. Evidently they saw something because _Dracula 2000 (2000)_ (qv) was cast in the form of Butler. Attila's producers, thinking that his big-screen role might help with their own film's ratings, finished shooting a little early so he could get to work on _Dracula 2000 (2000)_ (qv). Attila ended up being the second highest-rated TV movie ever. Following these two roles, Butler developed quite a fan base, an Internet site and began appearing on lists everywhere. Since then he has appeared in _Reign of Fire (2002)_ (qv) as Creedy and _Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)_ (qv) as Terry Sheridan, alongside 'Angelina Jolie' (qv). The role that garnered him most attention from both moviegoers and movie makers alike was that of Andre Marek in the big-screen adaptation of 'Michael Crichton' (qv)'s novel _Timeline (2003)_ (qv). Butler played an archaeologist who was sent back in time with a team of students to rescue a colleague. Last year he appeared in 'Andrew Lloyd Webber' (qv)'s musical _The Phantom of the Opera (2004)_ (qv), playing the title character in the successful adaptation of the stage musical. It was a role that brought him much international attention. Other projects include _Dear Frankie (2004)_ (qv), _The Game of Their Lives (2005)_ (qv) and _Beowulf & Grendel (2005)_ (qv). In 2007 he starred as Spartan King Leonidas in the Warner Bros. production _300 (2006)_ (qv), based on the 'Frank Miller (II)' (qv) graphic novel, and _Butterfly on a Wheel (2007)_ (qv) co-starring 'Pierce Brosnan' (qv) and 'Maria Bello (I)' (qv), which aired on network TV under the title Shattered. He most recently starred in _P.S. I Love You (2007)_ (qv) with Academy Award-winner 'Hilary Swank' (qv) . In 2007, he appeared in _Nim's Island (2008)_ (qv) and _RocknRolla (2008)_ (qv), and recently completed the new 'Mark Neveldine' (qv) / 'Brian Taylor (V)' (qv) film _Gamer (2009)_ (qv). His latest film _The Ugly Truth (2009)_ (qv) co-starring 'Katherine Heigl' (qv) began filming in April 2008.

His film career continued with small roles, first in the James Bond movie ''Tomorrow Never Dies'' (1997) and then Russell Mulcahy's ''Tale of the Mummy'' (1998). In 2000, Butler was cast in two breakthrough roles, the first being Attila the Hun in USA film ''Attila'' (2001/I) (TV). The film's producers wanted a known actor to play the part but kept coming back to Butler's screen tests and decided he was their man. He was cast as Dracula in ''Dracula 2000'' (2000).

In the role of Andre Marek in the big-screen adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel ''Timeline'' (2003), Butler played an archaeologist who was sent back in time with a team of students to rescue a colleague.
In 2003, director Joel Schumacher was deciding on the principal casting for the film ''The Phantom of the Opera'', a film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the same name, and thought of Butler, whom he had seen earlier in the film ''Dracula 2000'', to play the title character. Butler, who had had no musical experience other than singing in a rock band while he was studying to be a lawyer, was surprised at the interest, but immediately began taking singing lessons with a vocal coach. He then did an acting audition with Schumacher, and a singing audition with Lloyd Webber, both of whom were impressed by his performance.
Other projects that followed include ''Dear Frankie'' (2004), ''The Game of Their Lives'' (2005) and ''Beowulf & Grendel'' (2005).
In 2007, he starred as Spartan King Leonidas in the Warner Bros. production ''300'', which is often described as his breakthrough role. Butler, who said he "wanted to look really strong" in the film, trained with a high-intensity workout for four months prior to the film's shooting.
In 2007, he also appeared in ''Butterfly on a Wheel'' co-starring Pierce Brosnan and Maria Bello, which aired on network TV under the title ''Shattered'', and in the romantic comedy ''P.S. I Love You'' with Hilary Swank. In 2008, he appeared in ''Nim's Island'' and ''RocknRolla''. In 2009, he starred in the Mark Neveldine / Brian Taylor film ''Gamer'', ''The Ugly Truth'' and ''Law Abiding Citizen'', which he also co-produced. In 2010 he starred in the action/comedy ''The Bounty Hunter'' with Jennifer Aniston, and did a voice-over in the 2010 animated film ''How to Train Your Dragon'' as Stoick the Vast.
On 15 and 16 October 2010, thanks to the popularity of his role as Spartan King Leonidas and the use of his lines during athletic events at Michigan State University, he was a guest at their Midnight Madness and homecoming football game, respectively.

In 1992 his stand-up comedy drag act in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as a tea-towel clad Mother Teresa of Calcutta made the press when Scottish Television's religious affairs department mistakenly thought he represented the real Mother Teresa.
His first appearances in broadcasting were in his spot as a regular comedian and panellist on the BBC Radio 4 show ''Loose Ends'', when the show ran on Saturday mornings, in the early 1990s. His rise to fame began as one of the early successes of Channel 5, when he won an award for his performance as the stand-in host of a late-night TV talk show usually presented by Jack Docherty. This was followed by a comic quiz show on Channel 5 called ''Bring Me the Head of Light Entertainment'', which was not well received as a programme, but did further enhance Norton's individual reputation as a comic and TV host. In 1996, Norton co-hosted the late-night quiz show ''Carnal Knowledge'' on ITV with Maria McErlane.
In 1996, Norton played the part of Father Noel Furlong in three episodes ("Hell", "Flight Into Terror", "The Mainland") of the Channel 4 series ''Father Ted''. Father Noel Furlong was often seen taking charge of a small youth folk-group.
In 2003, he was the subject of controversy when, on his show on Channel 4, he made a comedic reference to the recent death of Bee Gees singer Maurice Gibb. The Independent Television Commission investigated after complaints about this insensitivity were forwarded to it and eventually Channel 4 had to make two apologies: one in the form of a caption slide before the show, another from Norton in person.
Also in 2003, he was listed in ''The Observer'' as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy (though Norton is Irish, the bulk of his television career has been in the UK).
In the summer of 2004, Norton moved across the Atlantic to start a new venture in American television. ''The Graham Norton Effect'' debuted on 24 June 2004 on Comedy Central, and was also broadcast in the UK on BBC Three. In the midst of controversy surrounding Janet Jackson's Super Bowl performance, Norton was wary of moving into the market.
In 2006, Norton hosted the BBC One series ''How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?'' in which Andrew Lloyd Webber tried to find a lead actress for his West End version of ''The Sound of Music''. Norton has subsequently presented the 3 follow-up series: ''Any Dream Will Do'' in 2007, in which a group of males competed to win the role of Joseph in the West End production of ''Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat''; ''I'd Do Anything'' in 2008, in which Andrew Lloyd Webber seeks to find the part of Nancy and Oliver for Sir Cameron Mackintosh's production of Lionel Bart's ''Oliver!''; and ''Over the Rainbow'' in 2010, following a similar format to find a new Dorothy for a ''Wizard of Oz'' West end Production.
Norton hosted various other shows for the BBC during this time, including ''When Will I Be Famous?'' (2007), ''The One and Only'' (2008) and ''Totally Saturday'' (2009). Since 2007, Norton has also been a regular host of The British Academy Television Awards. On 7 July 2007, Norton presented at Live Earth and undertook a trip to Ethiopia with the Born Free Foundation to highlight the plight of the Ethiopian wolf – the rarest canid in the world. In the same year, he was the subject of an episode of the BBC1 genealogy documentary ''Who Do You Think You Are?''.
Norton's chat show, ''The Graham Norton Show'', began on 22 February 2007 on BBC Two. Although in a format that he had not been involved in for 4 years, it is very similar to his previous Channel 4 shows. On 6 October 2009, the show moved to BBC One, in a new one-hour format.
In May 2010, he stood in for Chris Evans' breakfast show on BBC Radio 2. Later that month, it was confirmed that he would be replacing Jonathan Ross's Saturday morning slot on the same station.
In December 2011, the panel show ''Would You Rather...? with Graham Norton'' premiered on BBC America in the time slot immediately following ''The Graham Norton Show''. Recorded in New York, it is one of BBC America's earliest efforts at producing original programming, and is also the first panel game the channel has shown, either of British or American origin.
In January 2012, he called on listeners to his Radio 2 show to help find his car hours after it was stolen. He called it "The Great Car Hunt" and told listeners to “Keep your eyes out for it. It was filthy by the way."
In October 2008, it was confirmed by the BBC that Norton would replace Terry Wogan as the BBC's presenter for the UK heats of the ''Eurovision Song Contest'', in a show to be called ''Your Country Needs You''.
On 5 December 2008 it was announced that Norton would also take over from Wogan as the presenter of the main Eurovision Song Contest. The 54th Eurovision Song Contest was held in the Olimpiyskiy (Olympic) Stadium, Moscow on 16 May 2009.
Norton's jokes during his debut received some positive reviews from the British media. ''The Guardian'' noted his comments on Iceland's entry, which finished in second place, had "rooted around in a cupboard and found an old bridesmaid dress from 1987" and the Armenian singers, who finished in tenth place, were sporting traditional dress, "which would be true if you come from the village where Liberace is the mayor."
His comment “The bad news is you’re about to watch Albania. She’s only 17 so please bear that in mind. Where was her mother? Why didn’t she step in and say no?” which was made just before Albanian singer Kejsi Tola was set to take the stage dubbed an insult by many, sent ripples of outrage through not only Albania, but also the Albanian population in Britain. He then announced that Albania should get no points and that he didn't care what anybody else thought. There was a petition circling the net calling for a formal apology from Norton. The petition, which called his comment “very rude and insulting,” had drawn over 1,000 signatures. He never responded.
In 2011, he snarked that if Jedward's entry into the competition that year won, the twins would never sleep again. In the end, they were eighth. Earlier in that year's televote, he joked "Quick, someone take a picture", when The British entry that year went temporarily in the lead early on after high votes from Russia(4), Bulgaria(12) and Italy(10). In the end, the song dropped down the 11th, earning 100 points. Very annoyed, Norton claimed 'We were better than Jedward'.
Graham Norton played Mr. Puckov in the 2006 American comedy spoof film ''Another Gay Movie''. In 2007, Norton played Taylor in the romantic comedy film ''I Could Never Be Your Woman''.
Norton was involved in a high-publicity advertising campaign for the UK National Lottery as an animated unicorn, the stooge to a character based on Lady Luck (played by Fay Ripley). He has also advertised McVitie's biscuits.
In 2007, Norton featured in Girls Aloud and Sugababes' Comic Relief video for the single "Walk This Way."
In January 2009, Norton made his West End stage debut in a revival of ''La Cage Aux Folles'' at the Playhouse Theatre.
Since 2009, Norton has been the host of the comedy game-show ''Most Popular'' on US cable television channel WE tv.
Norton currently writes an advice column in ''The Daily Telegraph'' newspaper. In October 2010, these columns were made into a book entitled ''Ask Graham'', published by John Blake Publishing.
In 1989 while living in London, Norton was mugged, beaten and stabbed by a group of attackers on the street. He says he lost half his blood and nearly died, and he was hospitalised for two and a half weeks.
Norton is openly gay.
Norton suffers from vitiligo, a skin disorder in which patches of depigmented skin occur.
Norton caused controversy on 7 October 2006, when he described ecstasy as "fantastic."
Immediately after hosting the BAFTAs in 2009, he said he returned home only to fall down his stairs and break two ribs. Some sources claimed that he presented the next Graham Norton Show on crutches, but this is not true, although he did make a comment about it, related to ''Pushing Daisies'', by saying "in ''Pushing Daisies'' people die in all sorts of bizarre ways... someone else was killed by a man dressed as a crash-test dummy, and some idiot almost died when he got drunk and fell down the stairs after presenting the BAFTAs. As if that could happen in real life!"

According to the ''Sunday Mirror'', Kelly was banned from appearing in an advertising campaign for Asda because her boss, GMTV's managing director Clive Couch, feared that such a move would lead to more bad publicity for GMTV, which was fined £2 million by broadcasting regulator Ofcom in September for conning viewers with its premium-rate phone lines.
She has made several appearances on ''Have I Got News for You'' and has also presented it.
From 2004, she co-presented ''This Morning'' with Phillip Schofield, on Mondays and Fridays, to allow Fern Britton to spend more time with her family, but she left in March 2006.
Kelly acted as the guest host for two shows in 2006. Firstly for an episode of ''The Friday Night Project'' for Channel 4 and ''The New Paul O'Grady Show''. She did so again for Paul O'Grady on 30 November 2006, her 47th birthday and owing to sheer popularity, in November 2007 and April 2008.
Kelly also hosted the annual ''Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards'' in 2005 and 2006 for STV.
Kelly filmed an ITV documentary programme ''Secrets Revealed - DNA Stories'' in 2006, made by STV Productions, and broadcast on Sky Real Lives. A second series was shown on the channel in 2008.
Kelly filmed a six-part documentary series ''Lorraine Kelly's Big Fat Challenge'' shown on Bio in 2010. The series featured Kelly and a team of experts putting 'Britain's fattest family', the Chawner's family through their paces in order to lose weight and transform their lives. Daughter Emma Chawner is best known for her unsuccessful appearances on ''The X Factor''.
In 2010, in conjunction with the Missing People charity, Sky and STV produced a new documentary series hosted by Kelly, about missing mothers. This series followed the success of Sky’s previous successful missing person series ''Missing Children: Lorraine Kelly Investigates''.
In 2011, Kelly was the presenter of the ITV1 series ''Children's Hospital.
She was announced as the first Agony Aunt for the Royal Air Force's fortnightly ''RAF News'' on 7 October 2009.
Between 2004 and 2007, she served a period as the first female Rector of the University of Dundee and on 20 June 2008 she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University for her services to charity.
In a survey Kelly was voted the celebrity most people would like to buy a car from. In a recent article from the Daily Mail, Kelly was described as, 'TV's best-loved sofa star'.
She currently resides in Dundee, with her family when she is not working in London. She previously resided in Berkshire.
Kelly's grandparents emigrated from Draperstown, County Londonderry. On 5 September 2006, on GMTV, she examined her own family tree.
She is a Dundee United fan and attends most games.
She believes and has stated that denominational (single-faith) schools are a cause of sectarianism in Scotland.
