As a child, Geena dreamed of being an actress. While in high school, she felt left out and had low self-esteem because, at 6 feet, she was the tallest girl in school. After high school, Geena entered New England College in New Hampshire and then transferred the next year to Boston University, where she majored in drama. In 1979, she graduated and moved to New York to start her career. Her career consisted of sales clerk and waitress. She worked at Ann Taylor, where she eventually rose to Saturday window mannequin while trying to get a job with a modeling agency. Eventually signed by the Zoli Agency at the advanced age of 23, she wound up as a model in the Victoria Secret's Catalogue. Ever vigilant, 'Sydney Pollack' (qv) was looking for new talent in the catalogue when he spotted Geena and cast her in _Tootsie (1982)_ (qv). With good reviews, Geena moved to Los Angeles where she was cast as Wendy in the short-lived but critically acclaimed television series _"Buffalo Bill" (1983)_ (qv). Her next appearance on television was in her own show _"Sara" (1985)_ (qv), which was also good, but soon canceled. She then returned to the big screen in the below-average _Transylvania 6-5000 (1985)_ (qv) followed by the successful 'Chevy Chase' (qv) movie _Fletch (1985)_ (qv). From there on, she was on a roll with future husband 'Jeff Goldblum' (qv) in the horror remake of _The Fly (1986)_ (qv). More successful were 'Tim Burton (I)' (qv)'s dark comedy _Beetle Juice (1988)_ (qv) and _The Accidental Tourist (1988)_ (qv). For the last film, she was the surprise winner of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. More fun movies followed with the flying-saucer-in-the-pool _Earth Girls Are Easy (1988)_ (qv) and everyone-loves-a-clown _Quick Change (1990)_ (qv) with 'Bill Murray (I)' (qv). The very successful _Thelma & Louise (1991)_ (qv), directed by 'Ridley Scott' (qv), again garnered nominations for the Academy Award and Golden Globe. _A League of Their Own (1992)_ (qv), with 'Tom Hanks' (qv) and directed by 'Penny Marshall (I)' (qv), was the turning point as her next film, _Hero (1992/I)_ (qv), was only average. Then she married director 'Renny Harlin' (qv) and they set up a production and development company called "The Forge." Their first film was _Speechless (1994)_ (qv), which flopped at the box office. Undeterred, Renny decided to film the big-budget _Cutthroat Island (1995)_ (qv), starring pirate Geena, which also flopped. Geena has since starred in the thriller, _The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)_ (qv) and played Eleanor Little in _Stuart Little (1999)_ (qv) and _Stuart Little 2 (2002)_ (qv). In 2008, after being missed from the big screen for some years, she ventured to Sydney, Australia, playing the foul-mouthed mom of 'Harry Cook (II)' (qv) and 'Harrison Gilbertson' (qv) to shoot the dark comedy _Accidents Happen (2009)_ (qv).

Virginia Elizabeth "Geena" Davis (born January 21, 1956) is an American actress, film producer, writer, former fashion model, and a women's Olympics archery team semi-finalist. She is known for her roles in ''The Fly'', ''Beetlejuice'', ''Thelma & Louise'', ''A League of Their Own'', ''The Long Kiss Goodnight'' and ''The Accidental Tourist'', for which she won the 1988 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2005, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama for her role in ''Commander in Chief.
After roles in ''Fletch'', ''The Fly'', and ''Beetlejuice'', Davis received an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her role in ''The Accidental Tourist'' (1988), and a Best Actress nomination for her role in ''Thelma and Louise'' (1991). Davis replaced Debra Winger in the role of Dottie in ''A League of Their Own'' (1992) and received a Best Actress Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance. She then co-starred in ''Hero'' alongside Dustin Hoffman and Andy Garcia. Following this, Davis teamed up with then-husband Renny Harlin for the films ''Cutthroat Island'' and ''The Long Kiss Goodnight''. Due to the large box office failure of Cutthroat Island, her career took a substantial downturn. She and Harlin co-produced the films. Davis was nominated for Saturn Awards for her performances as Samantha/Charlie in ''The Long Kiss Goodnight'', and as Eleanor Little in ''Stuart Little'', a role she reprised in 2002, and again in 2005.
In 2000–2001, Davis starred in the short-lived sitcom ''The Geena Davis Show''. In early 2004, she guest-starred as Grace Adler's sister, Janet, on the NBC sitcom ''Will & Grace''. She went on to star in the ABC television series ''Commander in Chief'', portraying the first female President of the United States. This role garnered her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2006, and she also was nominated for an Emmy Award and a SAG Award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series. Also in 2006, she was awarded the Women in Film Lucy Award.
She made a comeback starring in the Australian produced, American set ''Accidents Happen'', which was released in April 2010.
On September 1, 2001, Davis married Reza Jarrahy, an Iranian American plastic surgeon. At age 46, Davis gave birth to their daughter Alizeh Keshvar (born April 10, 2002). At age 48, she had twin boys, Kian William Jarrahy and Kaiis Steven (born May 6, 2004).
In 2004, while watching children’s television programs and videos with her daughter, Davis noticed what she thought was an imbalance in the ratio of male to female characters. From that starting point, Davis went on to sponsor the largest research project ever undertaken on gender in children’s entertainment (resulting in 4 discrete studies, including one on children’s television) at the Annenberg School for Communication of University of Southern California. The study, directed by Dr. Stacy Smith, shows that there are nearly 3 males to every 1 female character in the nearly 400 G, PG, PG-13, and R-Rated movies the undergraduate team of Annenberg students coded.
In 2005, Davis teamed up with the non-profit group Dads and Daughters to launch a venture dedicated to balancing the number of male and female characters in children's TV and movie programming.
Davis launched The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media in 2007. The Institute’s first focus is an on-the ground program that works collaboratively with the entertainment industry to dramatically increase the presence of female characters in media aimed at children and to reduce stereotyping of females by the male-dominated industry.
For her work in this field she received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Bates College in May 2009.
In July 1999, Geena Davis was one of 300 women who vied for a semifinals berth in the US Olympic archery team to participate in the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. She placed 24th of 300 and did not qualify for the team, but participated as a wild-card entry in the Sydney International Golden Arrow competition.
