'It is a perfect example of turning an idea into a reality. It defines our rapid prototyping efforts and will demonstrate the art-of-the-possible when it comes to persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. AMATEUR astronomers are enjoying keeping track of the US Militaries top secret space plane, the X-37B. Launching in April, the X-37B got a lot of attention, although not a lot of information was released about it's true purpose. Built by Boeing's Phantom Works division, the X-37B was actually originally headed by NASA. It is currently under the supervision of a secretive Air Force unit. Only a few in the US military know it's purpose, although observers on Earth think it's clearly the start of the "weaponisation of space". In May, the X-37B's behavior suggested it was testing sensors for new spy satellites. It can also be a simple Satellite Tracker. When the shuttle disappeared July 29th, conspiracy theories about its fate started. Amateur sky watcher Greg Roberts of Cape Town, South Africa, noticed it failed to appear above his base on August 14. He spotted it five days later. Greg Roberts noticed it was 30km higher and also on a different trajectory, according to associates in Oklahoma and Rome. The small change of orbit can be a test of the maneuvering system. The shuttle has been orbiting for 124 days. It uses Solar array when in space for power, this will allow it to be airborne for upwards of 270 days. Although the presence of a rocket motor and large fuel tanks allows it to change orbit, as onlookers noticed with it's latest change of course.

The remotely piloted, 500-pound airplane with the silhouette resembling a manta ray also called a hybrid wing body -- is a tool of NASA's new Environmentally Responsible Aviation, or ERA, Project, which aims to develop the technology needed to create a quieter, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient airplane for the future. A flying test bed such as the X-48B enables NASA to assess and validate the key technologies. The recently concluded flight tests ascertained the handling and flying qualities of such an aircraft at speeds typical of landings and takeoffs. "This project is a huge success," said Fay Collier, manager of the ERA Project in NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. "Bottom line: the team has proven the ability to fly tailless aircraft to the edge of the low-speed envelope safely." The team is studying the structural, aerodynamic and operational advantages of the Blended Wing Body concept, a cross between a conventional plane and a flying wing design. The more than 200-second burn by the X-51's Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne-built air breathing scramjet engine accelerated the vehicle to Mach 5. The previous longest scramjet burn in a flight test was 12 seconds in a NASA X-43. Even before sifting through volumes of telemetry data transmitted by the X-51, Air Force officials called the test, the first of four planned, an unqualified success. The flight is considered the first use of a practical hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet in flight. "We are ecstatic to have accomplished the most significant of our test points on the X-51A's very first hypersonic mission," said Charlie Brink, X-51A program manager with the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. "We equate this leap in engine technology as equivalent to the post-World War II jump from propeller-driven aircraft to jet engines." Astronauts and space tourists could one day be sharing an armrest as they hurtle toward outer space under an agreement announced Wednesday between aerospace giant Boeing Co. and a private spaceflight marketing firm. Under the deal, Space Adventures of Vienna, Va., will market passenger seats aboard the seven-person spaceship that Boeing is developing in Huntington Beach. It is designed to fly atop a variety of launch vehicles and is expected to be ready to go by 2015. The spaceship, dubbed the Crew Space Transportation-100, is considered a contender for the job of ferrying astronauts to and from the International Space Station after the space shuttle program ends in 2011.
