A television film (also known as a TV film, television movie, TV movie, telefilm, telemovie, made-for-television film, movie of the week (MOTW or MOW), feature-length drama, single drama, and original movie) is a feature film that is a television program produced for and originally distributed by a television network, in contrast to many films explicitly made for showing in movie theaters.
Though not exactly labelled as such, there were early precedents for "television movies", such as the 1957 The Pied Piper of Hamelin, based on the poem by Robert Browning, and starring Van Johnson, one of the first filmed "family musicals" made directly for television. It was made in Technicolor, a first for television, which ordinarily used color processes originated by specific networks. (Most "family musicals" of the time, such as Peter Pan, were not filmed but broadcast live and preserved on kinescope. A kinescope is a recording of a television program made by filming the picture from a video monitor). This was the only way to record a television show until the invention of videotape).
Mehreen Jabbar (Urdu: مﮩرين جبار ) (b. December 29, 1971), is a noted Pakistani film-maker and television director/producer. Mehreen is the daughter of well known media-person and businessman Javed Jabbar, she was born in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.
Mehreen grew up around Pakistan's show business. Her father, Javed Jabbar has been a filmmaker, and a very successful ad man apart from a senator and a cabinet minister. After receiving a B.A. from St. Joseph's College in Karachi, Mehreen went abroad to the USA in order to study film and completed a two year program at University of California Los Angeles in 1993, with a Film, Television and Video certificate, and returned to Pakistan to direct and produced drama series/serials under the banner of TasVeer Productions, almost all of which were critically acclaimed by the Pakistani press.
Jabbar directed her first play 1994, called Nivala, which was an adaptation of Ismat Chughtai's short story. But the play never made it to the television screens, having been refused by state-run television channel PTV on the grounds that it was an Indian writer's work. It was a setback for Mehreen but she continued working for television and since then has made several award winning telefilms and TV series for numerous TV channels in Pakistan, in addition to a number of short films which have aired in festivals worldwide.
Bushra Ansari (Urdu: بشریٰ انصاری; born 15 May 1956) is a Pakistani television presenter, singer, actress and playwright who started as a child performer in the 1960s and has remained a major TV personality for over four decades.
Born in Karachi, Bushra Ansari is the daughter of eminent journalist and writer Ahmad Bashir. Following studies with Lahore's Lady Griffin School, she completed intermediate education at Lahore College for Women University and received a B.A. from Rawalpindi's Viqar un Nisa College for Women in 1977.
On 11 June 1978 Bushra married TV producer Iqbal Ansari and they became the parents of two daughters, Nariman Ansari, a photographer who focuses on portraiture and photojournalism, and Meera Ansari, a model and painter. Encouraged by her husband to resume the performing career she has pursued since childhood, Bushra has continued to maintain her position as a top personality in Pakistani entertainment industry. Her four siblings have also exhibited considerable accomplishments with sister Neelam Bashir known for writing poetry, and two other sisters, Asma Abbass, who lives in Lahore, and Sumbal Bashir, enjoying careers as actresses. She also has a brother, Humayun Sheikh.
Mansha Pasha (born October 19, 1987) is a Pakistani actress best known for portraying the character Rushna on Hum TV's dram serial Shehr-e-Zaat, of which she was also the line producer as part of her work experience at Hum TV.
Samina Peerzada (Punjabi, Urdu: ثمینہ پیرزادہ; born 9 April 1955) is a Pakistani television, film actress, and a director who has appeared in numerous films and television serials.
Peerzada was born as Samina Butt to Moinuddin Butt and Almas Butt in Lahore. Her father is a mechanical engineer. She did her graduation in Commerce. During her academic years, she took an active part in extracurricular activities. When she showed an inclination toward acting, both her parents supported her in adopting it as a profession.[citation needed]
In 1976, she starred her film Nazdikiyan. This was followed by many films, including Bazaare Husn and Khawahish. She has a long list of television plays to her credit, among them the popular are Raat and Hisar. She has also performed on stage for such successful productions as Raaz-o-Niaz and Gurya Ghar.
Now, she has become one of the more promising directors hailing from Pakistan's film industry based in Lahore. She initially directed a string of successful television productions, such as Sophia and Karb for Pakistan Television, but later chose to move to the celluloid world with her rather controversial directorial debut, Inteha, a film in which she also had a short role. Inteha was well received in the major urban centers of Pakistan, and paved way for Peerzada to direct Shararat, a film which lacked the slick urban look which people related Peerzada's films with.
