Austin Indymedia 2011 Year in Review Austin activism in 2011 saw an upsurge in activity throughout the year with the mantra of change in the air. With the revolutions in the Arab world acting as a spark, people lit the fire that was once at the heart of social change in America. Activists for human rights involved in a whole rage of issues joined forces to fight the system of injustice seen all across the United States and the world.	Stratfor Intelligence Leaked by Anonymous Reveals Spying on Occupy Movement and DGR View documents released by Anonymous here: http://pastebin.com/67P3vMJB Internet group Anonymous has leaked information from October and November 2011 suggesting that private intelligence firm STRATFOR has been working with Texas law enforcement to infiltrate the Occupy movement and spy on the Deep Green Resistance movement. In December 2011, Anonymous attacked the STRATFOR website, allegedly stealing 200 gigabytes of data and shutting the site down for weeks. This isn’t the first time Anonymous has gone after such corporations. In early 2011, Anonymous went after internet security firm HBGary, releasing private documents that included secret plans by HBGary and others to attack and discredit Wikileaks on behalf of big banks. The information released by Anonymous is a partial “teaser” of the information taken from STRATFOR. It consists of emails in which STRATFOR employees discuss Occupy Austin and Deep Green Resistance. STRATFOR “Watch Officer” Marc Lanthemann writes about receiving information on Occupy Austin and DGR from a “Texas DPS agent.” The Texas Department of Public Safety is a statewide law enforcement agency that includes the Texas Rangers, Highway Patrol, and an Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division.
Texas Groups Call on Wells Fargo to Divest From Private Prison Corporations A coalition of Austin-based immigrant rights, student and faith organizations joined community and labor groups in thirteen major cities nationwide on Tuesday, January 24th in protests against private detention company investments. Protestors are calling for major investors such as Wells Fargo to divest of their holdings in the for-profit private prison industry. According to SEC filings, Wells Fargo currently holds over 3.5 million shares in private prison corporation GEO Group and as well as shares in Corrections Corporation of America. Participants gathered outside the Wells Fargo bank on Guadalupe Street across from the Universoty of Texas. Organizers deilvered a letter to Well Fargo from community groups and faith organizations. “Wells Fargo’s support of the GEO Group is even more troubling in light of GEO’s history in Texas,” said Carmen Llanes of Texans United for Families. GEO’s facilities include prisons, immigration detention centers, and juvenile detention centers where people have suffered from inadequate medical care and unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Deaths, riots, and hunger strikes at GEO’s facilities are indicative of GEO’s culture of cruelty and underscore the need to end construction of new GEO facilities. Don't Buy War Freeze Flash Mob & Police Brutality at Barton Creek Mall CodePink Austin, along with allies from Veteran's for Peace and Women in Black staged a Don't Buy War "freeze" at Barton Creek Mall on Saturday, December 3rd. The strategically chosen mall location was between the Santa photo station and the Gamestop store, which prominently advertises the 'Modern Warfare 3' video game. The goals were to raise awareness about the continuing wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, to educate shoppers about the costs (both human and economic) of the wars, and to dissuade parents from purchasing war toys. The creative action was well received by shoppers, and several veterans approached the group to thank us. All was peaceful until mall security and APD arrived, and an APD officer brutally attacked a young woman who had joined the group spontaneously. Austin Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil The International Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil was held at City Hall on November 20, 2011. The event remembers people who have been murdered due to anti-transgender prejudice. The event honors those who have been killed and raises public awareness of hate crimes. Tracy Duvalis Kriese of PFLAG Click here for more photos.	38 Arrested at Occupy Austin On Saturday night, October 29th, the city of Austin decided to take down Occupy's food table with dozens of cops, then powerwashing the whole of city hall forcing everyone to deconstruct and move all belongings.
