Loire Castles - Chateau d'Amboise
At 6:50am, the Paristrip.com tourguide/driver (a handsome young man named Jerome) came to pick us up from our hotel in a minivan, with 3 passengers already comfortably seated (a young Brazilian student of architecture and a married couple from Mexico). After paying 540 euros (180per) for our Loire Valley castle tour, we climbed aboard and soon in 2 hours, we arrived at the first castle, Amboise. Built in the 11th century, the Chateau d'Amboise was seized by Charles VII of France, after its owner, Louis d'Amboise, was convicted of plotting against Louis X and subsequently pardoned after taking his chateau. Once in royal hands, the château became a favorite of French kings. King Francis I was raised at Amboise, which belonged to his mother, Louise of Savoy, and during the first few years of his reign, the château reached the pinnacle of its glory. As a guest of the King, Leonardo da Vinci came to the castle in December 1515 and lived and worked in the nearby Clos Lucé, connected to the château by an underground passage. Here at Amboise, he was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, adjoining the Château, which had been built in 1491--96. There is a memorial in the garden for the great inventor. Also in this castle, Henry II and his wife, Catherine de' Medici, raised their children along with Mary Stuart, the child Queen of Scotland who had been promised in marriage to the future French Francis II. One of the first truly "royal" residences of its kind, Amboise is a ...

Travel France - Tour of Amboise Chateau
Take a tour of Amboise Chateau in Amboise, France -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. The Amboise Chateau is a grand castle with a rather spotty, but interesting, history. It was first built in the eleventh century in order to control a nearby ford. King Charles the 7th seized it in 1434 after its owner was convicted of treason. Once in the hands of the French kings, it was enlarged and rebuilt. By 1500, the Amboise Chateau was as it is today, an elaborate and majestic castle. During the French Wars of Religion, another plot was discovered and the French Court left Amboise. The sense of history and importance is rich about the chateau and its scenic surroundings.

Château d'Amboise
Amboise and Leonardo da Vinci are irrefutably linked. The artist and inventor spent the last years of his life here. He lived in Le Clos-Lucé, a country house just outside the centre. He is said to have been buried in St Hubert's chapel at Château d'Amboise. The country house is open to the public. It contains reminders of da Vinci and there is a small exhibition. St Hubert's chapel is one of the most beautiful chateau buildings and was spared after the loss of the chateau.

France Travel - The Loire Valley: Chenanceau, Amboise and Clos Lucé
On April 23, 2012 I had an out-of-town excursion planned: a train trip to the historic city of Tours, which is located right in the heart of the scenic Loire Valley. I got to Tours at 9:45 am, walked into the Tourism Office and booked a Loire Valley tour in the afternoon. For 28 Euros I was going to visit three different castles in the famous valley. By 1:30 pm our minibus left and a small group of tourists got whisked by a friendly driver from the Saint-Eloi tour company to the first famous castle: the Château de Chenanceau, a gorgeous castle that spans the Cher River, a tributary of the Loire. The current castle was built in the French Renaissance style in the 1500s. Famous aristocrats are connected to this chateau: Francis I, King of France, who seized the castle from the previous owner for unpaid debts; Diane de Poitiers, the powerful mistress of the castle; and Catherine de Medici, the wife of King Henry II. With its mix of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture and its stunning interior, Chenanceau is the most visited castle in France, after Versailles. The second stop on my April 23, 2012 tour of the Loire Valley was the Château d'Amboise, located in a strategic position on an outcropping above the Loire River. Charles VII of France took the castle over in 1431 and from that point forward, this castle become a favourite among the French kings. In the late 1400s, Italian architects were brought in to modernize the castle. Leonardo da Vinci came to the ...
