Exotic Species
In the US "Exotic" refers to species that were brought from Europe, Asia, Africa or other far-away lands. Many exotics do not become problems. But the list of exotics that do cause problems is growing. It includes familiar pests: gypsy moth, starling, zebra mussel, boll weevil, multiflora rose, musk thistle, and johnson grass. When traveling, always obey state and federal laws regarding the importation of exotic plants and animals. We can help protect the uniqueness of all regions by leaving foreign species at home. mdc.mo.gov

Invasive Exotics
A short animation film about invasive alien species, also called invasive exotics. The film is made by Merel & Mirte Fellinger of Trick Design (www.trickdesign.eu) for the platform Stop invasieve exoten (Dutch association for prevention of introduction and spread of invasive exotics). Text Wilfred Reinhold, Merel & Mirte Fellinger, translation: Jaap Knegtmans (New Zealand), narration: Anita Stegwee, music: Aestrid Byrne "The End: I am not here". Websites of the association: www.invasieve-exoten.nl, www.tijgermug.info, www.nieuwslog.nl/author/wilfred and www.twitter.com/InvasieveExoten (in Dutch). A Dutch version of this film can also been seen on www.youtube.com The spoken text: It can be an enjoyable experience to encounter exotic plants and animals in the wild. But if you consider that they arrived through human intervention, you realise that they actually don't belong here. Furthermore, are these new organisms really that beneficial to the natural environment in the Netherlands? Whether accidentally or knowingly introduced, some exotic species can spread unrestricted throughout the country, because their natural predators and competitors are absent. These "invasive exotics" can steal our food or give us a nasty bite. They can also compete for food with our native animals which can threaten their existence, particularly if they themselves are a favoured food source. Many native species cannot defend themselves against exotics with their voracious appetites. The invasive ...

Thailand sees brisk trade in illegal species
Thailand has long been considered a major hub for the illegal trade in rare and exotic species. At Bangkok's Chatuchak market, the main centre of the trade, business is brisk. As part of our wildlife SOS series, Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay met with traders at the market who openly admit to selling illegally obtained animals.

Exotic Pets of a Mexican Drug Lord
The big fish of the drug trafficking world sometimes trade more than just narcotics. When authorities entered the property of one Mexican drug lord, this is what they found. Far from the jungle that named him king...this lion was discovered on a Mexican drug lord's property. From monkeys to tarantulas and rare birds that can fetch as much as $90000, exotic animals are now easy prey for drug traffickers. Authorities find they are traded along with drugs...used as vessels to transport drugs across borders....and bought and sold as symbols of status and fear. Some cartel leaders have even been reported to throw rivals to their cats for food. President of the Mexican Association for Animal Rights Gustavo Larios. [Gustavo Larios, Mexican Association for Animal Rights]: "Drug traffickers enjoy going to bull runs, cock fights, or host dog fights at their homes and private zoos. In part, it's what gives image to a person with money who lacks education and has poor ethics. It's something that's been fashionable among them for many years. They have always liked having that." In a global trade that totals an estimated $20 billion a year, China and the US are the largest markets for illegal animals and animal products...making the US- Mexico border a smuggling corridor tread by some of the world's most exotic species.

California Colloquium on Water: Cohen
The Invaded Estuary: Exotic Species in San Francisco Bay; given by Andrew N. Cohen, Senior Scientist and Director of the Biological Invasions Program, San Francisco Estuary Institute. The San Francisco Bay Estuary is one of the most highly invaded aquatic ecosystems in the world. The arrival of exotic organisms has altered its species composition, food webs and population dynamics, and exotics now account for most of the species, individuals and biomass across many of the estuary's habitats. Mr. Cohen discusses the state of these invasions, how they've arrived, what changes they've caused, and what if anything can be done about them.

Exotic prisoners
Annually, international wildlife trade is estimated to be worth billions of dollars and to include hundreds of millions of plant and animal specimens. The trade is diverse, ranging from live animals and plants to a vast array of wildlife products derived from them, including food products, exotic leather goods, wooden musical instruments, timber, tourist curios and medicines. Levels of exploitation of some animal and plant species are high and the trade in them, together with other factors, such as habitat loss, is capable of heavily depleting their populations and even bringing some species close to extinction. Many wildlife species in trade are not endangered, but the existence of an agreement to ensure the sustainability of the trade is important in order to safeguard these resources for the future.
