Fifteen of New York's Muslim leaders are boycotting Mayor Michael Bloomberg's annual interfaith breakfast after a recent Associated Press report revealed that NYPD had undercover agents spy on Islamic communities. The plainclothes officers conducted surveillance on Islamic businesses, local mosques, and Islamic student organisations. They even played cricket and visited ethnic clubs. The intelligence program was reportedly designed by a CIA officer. Linda Sarsour of the Arab-American Association of New York had this to say, "NYPD surveillance hits at the fabric of our community. It creates mistrust amongst people within their own community. It also hinders what people do in their daily lives, they don't want to go to the same coffee shops, or even pray at the mosques, and what it does is it creates mistrust also between us and law enforcement, which really undermines public safety for all New Yorkers."

Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Yemen's vice-president, has officially launched his campaign for the country's top office. He is also the only candidate in the running. Hadi's candidacy is part of a deal brokered between Yemen, the US and Gulf states to transfer power from President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has led Yemen for 33 years. But some leaders fear problems ahead. Abdulwahhab Al Anesi, the leader of the Islamist Islah Party, says elements of Saleh's regime are still trying to destabilise the transition. A blast has ripped through an oil pipeline in the Syrian city of Homs, where clashes between regime troops and opposition fighters have continued for over a week. Thick smoke can be seen hanging over the city - activists say the explosion was caused by a government airstrike. Reports also suggest the army has sent tanks which are attacking residential areas in the country's fourth largest city of Hama. And in the capital Damascus, troops are said to be raiding houses, looking for members of the Free Syrian Army. But with information hard to verify, there are concerns that some want only the regime painted in a bad light, and not the opposition. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com
