Early television

By the early 1960s, television companies commonly presented half-hour long "comedy" series, or one hour long "dramas." Half-hour series were mostly restricted to situation comedy or family comedy, and were usually aired with either a live or overdubbed laugh track. One-hour dramas included genre series such as police and detective series, westerns, science fiction, and, later, serialized prime time soap operas. Programs today still overwhelmingly conform to these half-hour and one hour guidelines.

While sitcoms would occasionally balance their humor with more dramatic and humanistic moments, these remained the exception to the rule as the 1960s progressed. Beginning around 1969 in the US, however, there was a brief spate of half-hour shows that purposely alternated between comedy and drama and aired without a laugh track, as well as some hour-long shows such as ''CHiPs'' in the late 70s to early 80s. At the time, these were known as "comedy-dramas." ''The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd'', which aired from 1987-1991, was another good example.

These early experiments also influenced general TV comedy, and later series (especially family themed sitcoms) often included brief dramatic interludes and more serious subject matter. A very good example of a highly successful comedy-drama series that disctincted this genre in television was the series ''Moonlighting''. This television series garnished an immense amount of critical acclaim as well as being a highly rated series worldwide. Another example of a successful comedy-drama was the television series ''Eight is Enough'' the reason that makes it distinct was that it wasn't a comedy-drama in the traditional sense but, that it was an hour-long series that utilized a laugh track which is very unusual but, is still considered a comedy-drama in that it alternated between drama and comedy.

In the United Kingdom the format first successfully appeared in 1979 with the long-running series Minder (TV series) (ITV/Euston Films/Thames) with other notable comedy-dramas being Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (ITV/''Witzend Productions''/Central Independent Television) and Big Deal (BBC).

Comedy-drama television series have been strongly associated with the single-camera production format, although not all single-camera comedy shows are necessarily comedy-dramas.

Grant Green (St. Louis, Missouri, June 6, 1935 – New York, January 31, 1979; some sources erroneously give the birth year as 1931) was a jazz guitarist and composer.

Recording prolifically and almost exclusively for Blue Note Records (as both leader and sideman) Green performed well in hard bop, soul jazz, bebop and Latin-tinged settings throughout his career. Critics Michael Erlewine and Ron Wynn write, "A severely underrated player during his lifetime, Grant Green is one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar ... Green's playing is immediately recognizable -- perhaps more than any other guitarist." Critic Dave Hunter described his sound as "lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy". He often performed in an organ trio, a small group with an organ and drummer.

Apart from Charlie Christian Green's primary influences were saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and his approach was therefore almost exclusively linear rather than chordal. The simplicity and immediacy of Green's playing, which tended to avoid chromaticism, derived from his early work playing rhythm and blues and, although at his best he achieved a synthesis of this style with bop, he was essentially a blues guitarist and returned almost exclusively to this style in his later career. Green used a Gibson ES-330, then a Gibson L7 with a Gibson McCarty pickguard/pick-up, an Epiphone Emperor (with the same pick-up) and finally had a custom built D'Aquisto. George Benson said he would turn all the bass and treble off the amp, and max the midrange. This way he could get his signature punchy, biting tone.

Biography

Lou Donaldson introduced Grant to Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records. Lion was so impressed with Grant that, rather than testing Grant as a sideman, as was the usual Blue Note practice, Lion arranged for him to record as a bandleader first. Green's initial recording session went unreleased until 2001, however, owing to a lack of confidence on Green's behalf. []

Despite the shelving of his first session, Green's recording relationship with Lion and Blue Note was to last, with a few exceptions, throughout the Sixties. From 1961 to 1965, Grant made more appearances on Blue Note LPs, as leader or sideman, than anyone else. Grant's first issued album as a leader was ''Grant's First Stand''. This was followed in the same year by ''Green Street'' and ''Grantstand''. Grant was named best new star in the ''Down Beat'' critics' poll, 1962, and, as a result, his influence spread wider than New York. He often provided support to the other important musicians on Blue Note, including saxophonists Hank Mobley, Ike Quebec, Stanley Turrentine and Harold Vick, as well as organist Larry Young.

''Sunday Mornin' '', ''The Latin Bit'' and ''Feelin' the Spirit'' are all loose concept albums, each taking a musical theme or style: Gospel, Latin and spirituals respectively. Grant always carried off his more commercial dates with artistic success during this period. ''Idle Moments'' (1963), featuring Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson, and ''Solid'' (1964), featuring the Coltrane rhythm section, are acclaimed as two of Grant's best recordings.

Many of Grant's recordings were not released during his lifetime. These include ''Matador'', in which Grant is once again in the heavyweight company of the Coltrane rhythm section, and a series of sessions with pianist Sonny Clark. In 1966 Grant left Blue Note and recorded for several other labels, including Verve. From 1967 to 1969 Grant was, for the most part, inactive due to personal problems and the effects of heroin addiction. In 1969 Grant returned with a new funk-influenced band. His recordings from this period include the commercially successful ''Green is Beautiful'' and the soundtrack to the film ''The Final Comedown''. Grant was also a huge influence on guitarists, from George Benson to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Still to this day guitarists try to get his signature sound, Idle Moments is consider one of the top 100 jazz albums of all time.

Grant left Blue Note again in 1974 and the subsequent recordings he made with other labels divide opinion: some consider Green to have been the 'Father of Acid Jazz' (and his late recordings have been sampled by artists including US3, A Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy), whilst others have dismissed them (Michael Cuscuna wrote in the sleeve notes for the album ''Matador'' that "During the 1970s he made some pretty lame records").

Grant spent much of 1978 in hospital and, against the advice of doctors, went back on the road to earn some money. While in New York to play an engagement at George Benson's Breezin' Lounge, Grant collapsed in his car of a heart attack in New York City on January 31, 1979. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, and was survived by six children. Since Green's demise, his reputation has grown to legendary status and many compilations of both his earlier (post-bop/straight ahead and soul jazz) and later (funkier/dancefloor jazz) periods, exist.

Eva Marcille (born October 30, 1984) is an American actress, TV host and fashion model, who most recently played the role of Tyra Hamilton on the soap opera ''The Young and the Restless''. She started her career by winning the third cycle of ''America's Next Top Model''. She was previously credited by her birth name, Eva Pigford. In an interview with B. Scott, she revealed that she changed her name for acting purposes; Marcille is her middle name, an amalgam of "Marjorie" and "Lucille," her grandmothers' names.

Television work

In addition, Marcille hosted BET J's reality show ''My Model Looks Better Than Your Model'', as well as ''Rip the Runway'' on BET. Furthermore, she has appeared in several music videos, including "Baby" by Angie Stone (featuring Betty Wright), 50 Cent's single, "I Get Money," and Jamie Foxx's music video, "DJ Play a Love Song". She is also mentioned in Lil' Kim's song, "I Know You See Me" and Missy Elliott's "On & On" where the rapper sings, "Top model diva but my name not Eva."

Marcille was cast as a regular on a FOX show called ''The Wedding Album'' in 2006, but FOX cancelled it before it aired.

In 2005, Marcille appeared in a first-season episode of the MTV improv show ''Nick Cannon Presents Wild 'N Out''. In December 2007, Marcille played a featured role in an episode of ''Smallville''.

She has recently joined the cast of ''The Young and The Restless'' as a young mother named Tyra Hamilton (Contrary to speculation, Eva's character was not named after Tyra Banks, but for ''The Young and The Restless''' head writer Maria Arena Bell's best friend's daughter whose name is Tyra). After a few months, her character, who was planned to be temporary was made permanent. In 2009, Marcille was nominated for two NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series for her ''Y&R;'' role but didn't get the awards. She did however win a Young Hollywood award

In film, her credits include ''The Walk'', ''Crossover'', and, most recently, ''I Think I Love My Wife''.

She will appear in a new show on BET called ''Played by Fame'' where contestants have nightmarish dates with celebrities (2009).

She will be the new host of Oxygen's reality series Hair Battle Spectacular.

Biography

His next big move was when he was signed to Teddy Riley's R&B; group Blackstreet in 1994. He worked with the group on their first album and then left the group to pursue his own solo career. He was signed to DreamWorks Records and began working on an album.

In 1999, Hollister released his first album, ''Ghetto Hymns''. The album was successful, going gold, and creating one hit single, "My Favorite Girl". "My Favorite Girl" reached #10 on the R&B; charts.

Hollister's follow-up album, ''Chicago '85... The Movie'' was released in 2000. The album was an autobiographical work and went gold. "One Woman Man" the album's biggest single, reached #8 on the R&B; charts. Also in 2000, Dave Hollister collaborated on "He Say, She Say" with Keith Sweat on "Don't Have Me".

For his third effort, Hollister moved to Motown Records. He hoped the new label would instill new energy into his music. The album, ''Things In the Game Done Changed'' was released in 2002 and fared poorly on the charts and radio.

As a result of the album's shortcomings, Hollister returned to DreamWorks where he released ''Real Talk'' in 2003. Following the album's release, Hollister moved to Gospo Centric.

Hollister is reportedly wrapping up his fifth album in the industry, ''The Book of David: Vol. 1 The Transition''. The album will be coming out on September 26, 2006 from Gospo Centric.

He currently serves as Assistant Minister of Music for New Direction Christian Church satellite location in Collierville, Tennessee.

Dave has also reunited with his former group Blackstreet and will be performing with them on their upcoming reunion tour along with Guy Blackstreet's founder Teddy Riley's other group. In addition to Riley Blackstreet members Chauncey Hannibal, Mark Middleton, and Eric Williams will be a part of the reunion. Guy members in addition to Riley will include brothers Aaron Hall and Damion Hall. Teddy Riley has decided to only focus on Blackstreet and Mark Middleton and Eric Williams are no longer a part of the reunion. Blackstreet's lineup has tweeked again and now Mark Middleton & Eric Williams are back along with Teddy Riley and Dave Hollister. Chauncey Hannibal was there but is no longer with the group anymore as he's pursuing a solo career.

Teddy Riley, Dave Hollister, Mark Middleton, and Eric Williams will start touring in 2011.
