Nuclear Blast is an independent record label and mail order record distributor with subsidiaries in Germany, the United States and Brazil. The record label was founded in 1987 by Markus Staiger in Germany. Originally releasing hardcore punk records, the label moved on to releasing albums by melodic death metal, grindcore, power metal and black metal bands, as well as tribute albums. Nuclear Blast is widely respected as the top label for the death metal scene, along with fellow non-RIAA label Century Media. The label's main office is in Donzdorf, Göppingen. Nuclear Blast America and Century Media work together as a strategic partnership between the two independent metal labels. They are distributed through Caroline/EMI.
Nuclear Blast started signing grindcore acts after Staiger discovered Las Vegas' Righteous Pigs. This followed with releases by Atrocity, Deathstars, Master and (Incubus) Opprobrium, which all sold over 30,000 copies. The grindcore explosion is considered a landmark in the label's history, gaining it worldwide attention which of course is just an opinion.
In the early nineties, black metal became highly popular in the European underground, and Nuclear Blast signed many bands. Many of them, such as Dimmu Borgir and Dissection, are still signed to Nuclear Blast. The black metal trend became increasingly popular, and by 1996, several Nuclear Blast-signed artists were entering European charts. By the end of 1997, Nuclear Blast had 20 employees and mailed out a 100 page catalogue quarterly to 50 countries.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, they expanded into a direction of power metal, promoting bands such as HammerFall and the German power metal innovators Helloween. During the 2000s, Nuclear Blast started promoting some Finnish bands, such as Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica, and the German band Blind Guardian, expanding their style further into different subgenres of metal.
Swedish band Meshuggah became the first band in the history of Nuclear Blast Records to crack the ''Billboard'' 200, landing at #165 with their 2002 album, ''Nothing''. Meshuggah also became the first Nuclear Blast band to be reviewed in ''Rolling Stone'' magazine.

Haake also writes the majority of Meshuggah lyrics and also contributes spoken vocals on several songs ("The Exquisite Machinery of Torture" on the album ''Chaosphere'', "Spasm" on the album ''Nothing'', as well as on several chapters on the album ''Catch Thirtythree'' and on the song "Dancers to a Discordant System" from ''ObZen'').
The drumset Tomas Haake uses has been meticulously sampled in full for the software instrument Drumkit From Hell Superior made by Toontrack, with Haake performing all the drumming himself. It since has been used by many bands, including fellow metal act Clawfinger, Devin Townsend's ''Ziltoid the Omniscient'', Dethklok on Adult Swim's TV show ''Metalocalypse'' (in several songs from the second season), and Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan. The latter used it to program drum parts for the album ''Ire Works'' before The Dillinger Escape Plan found drummer Gil Sharone. Meshuggah later went on to use this software instrument to program all the drum tracks for their album ''Catch ThirtyThree'', and the re-release of their album ''Nothing'', using no live recorded drums by Haake. obZen also used the software as an auxiliary sound source as Haake played.
In the July edition of ''Modern Drummer'' magazine, Haake was named the number one drummer in the "Metal" category, as decided upon in the magazine's 2008 Readers' Poll.
Haake also provides spoken vocals on Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal's solo album ''Sol Niger Within'' and vocals on the song "Futile Bread Machine (Campfire Version)" from ''The True Human Design''.

Jens Kidman (born 8 June 1966 in Sweden) is the vocalist and former guitarist for the Swedish experimental metal band Meshuggah. He is famous for his very aggressive shouts and screams and for his "mean" stage presence.
His vocal style consist of growls, hardcore shouts and aggressive screams. Kidman's vocal style has distinctly evolved over Meshuggah's career: earlier Meshuggah albums like ''Destroy Erase Improve'' and ''Chaosphere'' showcase Kidman's aggressive shouts and growls. In later albums such as ''Nothing'' and ''Catch Thirtythree'', Kidman's vocals were more of a monotone, almost robotic quality.
Kidman works with the rest of the band to make sure that his vocals take on a near-rhythmic quality when set to the music, sometimes even re-writing lyrics entirely for this purpose. The only time he is heard singing clean vocals on a Meshuggah recording is on the song "Ritual" from the EP ''None''. He occasionally double tracks his vocals as well. He sometimes writes lyrics for Meshuggah, for example on the tracks "Terminal Illusions" and "Suffer in Truth" from ''Destroy Erase Improve''.
He contributed vocals on the track "The Dream Is Over" from the album ''XIII'' by American alternative metal/industrial metal band Mushroomhead.

Dimmu Borgir () is a Norwegian black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1993. ''Dimmu borgir'' means "dark cities" or "dark castles/fortresses" in Icelandic, Faroese and Old Norse. The name is derived from a volcanic formation in Iceland, Dimmuborgir. The band has been through numerous line-up changes over the years; guitarist Silenoz and vocalist Shagrath are the only founding members remaining.
In 2005, the band did a complete re-recording of the ''Stormblåst'' album, featuring Hellhammer of Mayhem fame as the session drummer. The album also featured a DVD with a live performance from the 2004 Ozzfest tour.
In 2009, members ICS Vortex and Mustis independently announced their departure from Dimmu Borgir. Mustis released a statement claiming his disfavor with the band, stating that he was not properly credited for his writing contributions to the band's music, mentioning possibly taking legal action.
Dimmu Borgir soon after confirmed the pair's dismissal from the band, releasing a statement explaining why the two were fired. Shagrath, Silenoz, and Galder wrote, "Funny then, how the new album is halfway finished written already by the rest of us without any of these guys' input, still having all those elements we're known for."
On July 8, the band confirmed that they had tapped Swedish multi-instrumentalist Snowy Shaw (Therion, Dream Evil) to replace bassist/clean vocalist ICS Vortex on the band's upcoming album, "Abrahadabra", and world tour. On August 25 it was announced that Snowy Shaw has left Dimmu Borgir to rejoin Therion. On September 17, 2010 Dimmu Borgir released the song "Born Treacherous" from their upcoming album Abrahadabra on their official MySpace page. Then on September 24 the band announced they would stream Abrahadabra in its entirety until 7 p.m. EST that evening. The keyboards and bass are currently played by Gerlioz from Apoptygma Berzerk and Cyrus of Susperia respectively, and the clean vocals are sampled. On May 28, 2011 Dimmu Borgir gave a very special one-off show at the Oslo Spektrum with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Schola Cantorum choir. A live album and DVD of the show titled "Forces of the Northern Night" with an accompanying documentary is scheduled for release later this year.
