The Monastic Life, an opportunity for the Church
The Monastic Life, an opportunity for the Church
"The monastic life and its meaning in the Church and the world today"was the theme of the Plenary Assembly of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Monsignor Pierre Raffin, Bishop of Metz, France, tells us that the decline in the number of monks and nuns in the world has an impact on the development of monasticism.Monasticism was born in the East and developed greatly in Western Europe, and while for some years it has become less important in Western Europe and the East, it has taken root in new cultures in Africa, Asia, and also on the American continent. At times, the encounter of monasticism with these new cultures is not always an easy thing, and we can say that in this area we have not found the answers yet and we continue to look for them. The monastic life is a free and personal choice of life, but no less radical, which is not always obvious."It's more complicated to live this radicalism in a world of consumerism where before entering a monastery people have been accustomed to a life of comfort. ... Having your car, your cell phone, your computer." "There then must be a break with all the conveniences of the modern world, which are not bad in themselves, and then in its place, an asceticism, a break from that which is very important." But what can these monastic congregations bring to the church today? Msgr. Raffin did not hesitate to answer: their place is central and unique ...

Monastic Life @ Pluscarden Abbey (Benedictine)
Monastic Life @ Pluscarden Abbey (Benedictine)
(SOME audio parts are out of sync with some of video,sorry)-Benedictine monastery dating from 1230.AD located in northern Scotland. Pluscarden Abbey is the home of a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine monks. It is the only medieval monastery in Britain still inhabited by monks and being used for its original purpose. The atmosphere of quiet reflection and of work dedicated to the glory of God is the same now as it was in the thirteenth century, when a community of monks first came to this part of Moray. The Mass and full Divine Office are sung by the monks each day in the Abbey church, using Gregorian Chant. Thus the monks of Pluscarden conceive their primary service to lie in prayer, regular observance and their life in common. Unlike most monasteries, Pluscarden has chosen to keep Latin in the Mass and the full Divine Office. called in love to "give themselves over to God alone in solitude and silence, in constant prayer and willing penance"; and among these are monks whose "principal duty is to present to the Divine Majesty a service at once humble and noble within the walls of the monastery" (Vatican II Perfectae Caritatis 7 & 9). "Hearken, my son, to the precepts of the master and incline the ear of your heart; freely accept and faithfully fulfil the instructions of a loving father, that by the labour of obedience you may return to him from whom you strayed by the sloth of disobedience. To you are my words now addressed, then, if you are ready to give up your ...

TEDxOkanaganCollege - Ajahn Sona -Green Monasticism
Ajahn Sona discusses the interaction with global monastic practices with sustainability matters. The Birken Forest monastery is highlighted. Born in Canada, Ven. Sona's background as a layperson is in classical guitar performance. His encounter with Buddhist wisdom as a young man initiated a spiritual journey that led him to become a lay hermit for several years. He subsequently ordained as a Theravada monk under Ven. Gunaratana, at the Bhavana Society in West Virginia, where his first years of training took place. Ven. Sona further trained for over three years at monasteries following Ajahn Chah in northeast Thailand, especially Wat Pah Nanachat. Upon his return to Canada in 1994 he helped found Birken Forest Monastery near Pemberton, BC. As its spiritual guide, Ajahn ("teacher") Sona has led the monastery through each stage of its growth. He established Birken (or, Sitavana, 'cool forest') in its final location south of Kamloops BC in 2001. For more than forty years inspired by the pioneering dialogues of the Trappist monk Thomas Merton, with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and the Zen master Daisetz T. Suzuki Buddhist and Christian monastics have been engaged in interfaith colloquies about the similarities and differences between these two great spiritual traditions. In 2008, practitioners from Catholicism and various Buddhist traditions met at Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky, the home of Thomas Merton. The theme was the Buddhist and Catholic response to the environmental ...

Giorgio Agamben. A Genealogy of Monasticism. 2009 1/7
www.egs.edu Giorgio Agamben continuing a series of seminars on the idea of rule and life. In this class, he explored the genealogy of monasticism, touching on subjectivity, music in the monastery, liturgy and prayer as a form of chant. He discussed the development of juridical law from Franciscan rule, Phillipe Lacoue-Labarthe, the non-juridical character of monastic rule, Spanish Scholastics. He spoke about the obligation of the vow and the vow of the vow, Immanuel Kant and the categorical imperative, as well as the idea of the other. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School (EGS). Giorgio Agamben is perhaps Italy's most famous contemporary philosopher; as a leading figure in both philosophy and radical political thought, he has been intimately connected, along with Antonio Negri and Paolo Virno to Italy's post-1968 leftist politics. During his tenure as professor at the Universita di Venizia, he has written widely on philosophy, politics, theology as well as radical critical theory—indeed, there is little in the world of critical theory that he has not at some point touched upon. Working in the wake of such thinkers as Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida, as well as Martin Heidegger (with whom he studied with as a post-doctoral student) Agamben has become one the most influential thinkers of his generation, concerned primarily with the proper ethical and political task of thought. www.egs.edu Giorgio Agamben offering an analysis of power through an investigation of the paradox of monastic life in light of his concept, form-of-life. He spoke about St Francis, Catholic rule or regula, papal power and the history of the monastic experience. Drawing on a history of that shows the progressive control of the monastery by the church. He spoke about spiritualists, Pope John XXIII, the role of the apostate, existence and essence, law and life, Edward Muybridge and Étienne-Jules Marey, schema and rythmus, and looked at monastic literature.
