Undercover FBI agents last night arrested a Moroccan man as he headed towards the US Capitol allegedly intent on carrying out a suicide bombing at the heart of the American government. Amine El Khalifi, who was said to be in his thirties, was captured nearby by police and FBI agents following a "lengthy and extensive operation", according to the Capitol police, who patrol the home of US politics. A police spokesman said in a statement that "at no time was the public or congressional community in any danger" from the man, who had been "closely and carefully monitored" by officers. It appeared that the arrest was the culmination of the latest in a series of FBI sting operations against alleged "lone wolf" would-be jihadists. The man allegedly plotted alongside government agents whom he was led to believe were al-Qaeda operatives. A spokesman for federal prosecutors in Virginia, where the investigation was centred, suggested that a vest carried by Mr Khalifi, which he planned to use for a suicide attack, was in fact filled with non-lethal material. "Explosives the suspect allegedly sought to use in connection with the plot had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and posed no threat to the public," he said. Mr Khalifi was reported to have been praying at a mosque in the Washington area shortly before his arrest. It was unclear how the FBI learned of his alleged intention to attack the US. At least 20 people have been arrested in the US on terrorism-related charges ...
