Classic CBS Radio Stagers and Sounders
During the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, the CBS Radio owned-and-operated news stations had a superior style and sound: tight and cohesive production, lively presenters, excellent engineering and outstanding "audio logos" from a company called Identitones. This compilation contains a few stagers and sounders from the heyday of the CBS Radio local news format. In partnership with CBS Laboratories, CBS Radio developed a unique system to advise affiliates of news bulletins. When activated from network headquarters, CBS NetAlert transmitted coded information over the network lines to each station to communicate anything from the start of a special feed to a national emergency. The system had the capability to override local programming for a special report from CBS News. A NetAlert receiver is seen toward the end of this video. All rights are acknowledged.

JFK Assassination: First Radio Network Bulletin
This was the first bulletin on the shooting of US President John F. Kennedy aired by a nationwide broadcast network in the United States. It's presented here, unedited, just as it aired originally. This report was broadcast out of the New York headquarters of the ABC Radio Network on Friday, November 22, 1963 at 1:36:50 PM EST, approximately 6 1/2 minutes following the Kennedy shooting in Dallas, Texas. This ABC Radio News flash was not only the first nationwide radio network bulletin concerning the JFK assassination but was aired before any of the television network bulletins on the assassination were broadcast that day. In this first ABC Radio bulletin, anchorman Don Gardiner is reading the very first wire bulletin on the shooting, which had been dictated by phone to United Press International from UPI correspondent Merriman Smith while Smith was in a press follow-up car in the Kennedy motorcade. The ABC Radio Network was providing its affiliated stations a program of popular music and had just begun feeding Doris Day's song, "Hooray For Hollywood", when the radio network's news division interrupted with this first bulletin.

Jim Rome Leaving ESPN for CBS Sports Network
On Twitter: @Li495Akiem Unfortunately, Jim Everett won't be his first guest. But, ESPN's resident Van Smack made news earlier this week when it was revealed that his contract with the Bristol campus had concluded and that he was looking for opportunities with another sports channel. In short, he had his EYE on one in particular. Rome announced and ESPN/CBS confirmed that Rome will indeed be leaving the 4-letter network at the end of the current month and he will take himself, his "burns" and his show over to the CBS Sports Network which currently has about as little fanfare as a sports channel could have with a mainstream product like CBS. According to The Big Lead, Romey makes approximately $30 million from his radio show alone which has a multitude of affiliates, most of them on Fox Sports Radio stations. The reason why most of his affiliates are on FSR stations is because his show is done through Premiere Radio Networks. PRN and FSR have something in common...they're owned by Clear Channel which renamed itself Clear Channel Media and Entertainment this week. FSR uses this as a backdoor for their affiliates to land his show even though Rome's show is never advertised as being on Fox Sports Radio. He most likely will continue his radio show, but the Rome/Fox/CBS connection just got a new meaning. CBS owns a multitude of sports stations across the country, many of which it recently launched on FM over the past few years. Ironically, Rome also lost an affiliate in Houston ...

The Whistler "Fatal Error" CBS 5/7/50 Radio Mystery Drama
Whistler Fatal Error "Fatal Error " CBS 5/7/50 "The Whistler" was an American radio program running for a total of 13 years from May 16, 1942 until September 22, 1955. It was one of the most popular mystery drama's of its' time. Signal Oil Company sponsored the program. The marketing catch phrase was: "Let that whistle be your signal for the Signal Oil program, The Whistler." During the first two years of the show J. Donald Wilson was the writer and producer. During 1944 producer and director George Allen took over. Other directors included Sterling Tracy and Sherman Marks with final scripts by Joel Malone and Harold Swanton. 692 total episodes were produced. Over 200 of those episodes can not be found and are no longer in existence. The Whistler always finishes his stories with fatalistic relish, and "the strange ending to tonight's story" is rarely what one expects. In the world of The Whistler, fate has a few speedbumps for the hasty acts of the foolish! Those with a taste for crime and the macabre will enjoy the world of The Whistler.

Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a 'sustaining show' (it ran without commercial breaks), thus adding to the dramatic effect.
