Colonel W. de Basil's Monte Carlo Russian Ballet comes to Australia (1936-7)
https://vimeo.com/212724079
A number of Ballets Russes companies were formed in the wake of the dissolution of Serge Diaghilev's Ballet Russe following his death in 1929.
Between 1936 and 1940 three of these companies visited Australia in tours orchestrated by the entrepreneur Colonel Wassily de Basil.
The first, a company assembled in London by de Basil and billed as '(Colonel W. de Basil's) Monte Carlo Russian Ballet', toured for nine months between 1936 and 1937. Its sixty-two dancers were drawn largely from the Ballets de Leon Woizikowsky, augmented by artists from de Basil's own company, and from Rene Blum's Ballets de Monte Carlo.
The second tour, which took place over seven months between 1938 and 1939, was by the 'Covent Garden Russian Ballet, presented by Educational Ballets...

Wassily de Basil (16 September 1888 – 27 July 1951), usually referred to as Colonel W. de Basil, was a Russian ballet impresario.
De Basil was born Vassily Grigorievich Voskresensky in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1888 (his year of birth is given variously as 1880 or 1886.) LA VALSE (Marnee Morris and Anthony Blum - 1973)
NYC Ballet soloist, Marnee Morris, and NYC Ballet principal dancer, Anthony Blum, in an excerpt from George Balanchine's LA VALSE. Filmed in Berlin, the editing was terrible and Balanchine was very disappointed, but at least we have a record of dancers he trained, dancing the way he wanted. The three beautiful girls in the last waltz are the very young Merrill Ashley, Renee Estopinal, and Marjorie Spohn.

Andre Eglevsky, Maria Tallchief - PDD to the Adagio from Mendelssohn's 'Scotch Symphony'
This is footage of Ballets Russes Andre Eglevsky (1917-1977) and Maria Tallchief (1925-2013) performing a pas de deux to the Adagio from Mendelssohn's 'Scotch Symphony'.
The performance was broadcast on the Bell Telephone Hour on the 9th April 1959.
I am very happy to upload this footage in part in tribute to the great native American ballerina, Maria Tallchief, who passed away this year and who did so much for the prestige of home-grown ballet dancers in her country.
I've also always been fascinated by dancers initially connected with the Ballets Russes -- the original company and all its off-shoot companies after the death of Serge de Diaghilev in 1929.
Andre Eglevsky has a great pedigree in these terms.
After studying with Lubov Egorova, Mathilde Kschessinska, Alexandre Volinine, ...

Its sixty-two dancers were drawn largely from the Ballets de Leon Woizikowsky, augmented by artists from de Basil's own company, and from Rene Blum's Ballets de Monte Carlo.
The second tour, which took place over seven months between 1938 and 1939, was by the 'Covent Garden Russian Ballet, presented by Educational Ballets Ltd'. In essence, this was the de Basil company of the time. The use of the title 'Educational Ballets Ltd' related to the need for de Basil to formally distance himself from company management during a legal dispute with the Ballets de Monte Carlo, the company that had been founded by Rene Blum following his split with de Basil in 1935. By 1938, the Ballets de Monte Carlo was based in America under the direction of Sergei Denham with the financial backing of Universal Art. An attempted merger between this company and that of de Basil early in 1938 ended acrimoniously, with ensuing legal challenges by Universal Art over the copyright of particular works. Prior to this, legal challenges to de Basil over copyright had also been instigated by Leonide Massine during his 1937 move from the de Basil to the rival company as artistic director. Michel Fokine, originally ballet master and choreographer for Blum had, also in 1937, moved in the other direction, joining de Basil. A feature of this second Australian tour was the presence of Fokine, supervising the production of his own ballets.
For the third tour, Colonel de Basil assembled a company that, in addition to his English-based dancers, included a number who were stranded in America on the outbreak of war. These two groups were united in Australia, forming the company that was most commonly referred to as 'The Original Ballet Russe', although it was also billed as 'Colonel W. de Basil's Covent Garden Ballet' and 'Colonel W. de Basil's Ballet Company'. De Basil himself accompanied this tour, which began in December 1939 and, although originally planned to be of ten weeks duration, was, due to the complexities of the war, extended until September 1940.
This footage recorded that first 1936-7 Ballets Russes tour.
Enjoy!

Wassily de Basil (16 September 1888 – 27 July 1951), usually referred to as Colonel W. de Basil, was a Russian ballet impresario.
De Basil was born Vassily Grigorievich Voskresensky in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1888 (his year of birth is given variously as 1880 or 1886.) He is said to have been a colonel in the Cossack army, although his claim to the title "Colonel" is disputed. De Basil was demobilised from the army in 1919 and worked as an entrepreneur in Paris.
Following the death of Sergei Diaghilev in 1929, the members of his Ballets Russes went in many directions. In 1929-1930 de Basil's ballet troupe acted together with Aleksey Tsereteli’s opera troupe.
De Basil and René Blum, ballet director at the Monte Carlo Opera, along with financier Serge Denham, founded the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo in 1931. The ballet gave its first performance in Monte Carlo in 1932.
Blum and de Basil did not agree artistically, leading to a 1934 split,[4] after which de Basil hooked up with financier Sol Hurok. Col. de Basil initially renamed the company Ballets Russes de Colonel W. de Basil.
In 1937, René Blum and former Ballets Russes choreographer Léonide Massine organized a new ballet company and lured away some of de Basil's dancers. In addition, Massine sued de Basil in London to regain the intellectual property rights to his own works. He also sued to claim the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo name. The jury decided that de Basil owned Massine's ballets created between 1932 and 1937, but not those created before 1932. It also ruled that both successor companies could use the name Ballet Russe — but only Massine & Blum's company could be called Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Col. de Basil renamed his company again, as the Covent Garden Russian Ballet. In 1939, he gave the company its final name, the Original Ballet Russe.
De Basil brought the Original Ballet Russe on a tour of Australia in 1939–1940. He had earlier organised tours to Australia in 1936–1937 and 1938–1939, although he did not travel with the company. During his visit to Australia, de Basil commissioned work from Australians, especially from designers, who included Sidney Nolan and Kathleen and Florence Martin. He also instigated a design competition for an original Australian ballet, which was won by Donald Friend with designs for a ballet based on a fictitious event in the life of Ned Kelly.
He directed Ballets Russes companies, which performed under a variety of different names, until his death in Nice in 1951.

After studying with Lubov Egorova, Mathilde Kschessinska, Alexandre Volinine, Olga Preobrajenska, and Leon Woizikowski in Paris, Nicholas Legat in London, he joined Colonel W. de Basil's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo at age fourteen, and after six months was dancing leading roles in 'Swan Lake', 'Les Sylphides', and 'Les Présages'.
Youskevitch also danced with René Blum's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, Ballet Theatre (now the American Ballet Theatre), and the Marquis George de Cuevas' Grand Ballet de Monte Carlo.
He also danced at the Radio City Music Hall, on the Broadway in 'Great Lady' and appeared in 'Limelight' directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin in 1952.
After retirement in 1958, the dancer formed the Eglevsky Ballet Company, which continues today.
Enjoy!
