Contemporary R&B; (also known as simply R&B;) is a music genre that combines elements of hip hop, soul, R&B; and funk.

Although the abbreviation “R&B;” originates from traditional rhythm and blues music, today the term ''R&B;'' is most often used to describe a style of African American music originating after the demise of disco in the 1980s. Some sources refer to the style as urban contemporary (the name of the radio format that plays hip hop and contemporary R&B;).

Contemporary R&B; has a polished record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, an occasional saxophone-laced beat to give a jazz feel (mostly common in contemporary R&B; songs prior to the year 1993), and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement. Electronic influences are becoming an increasing trend, and the use of hip hop or dance inspired beats are typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop may be reduced and smoothed out. Contemporary R&B; vocalists are often known for their use of melisma, popularized by vocalists such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

History

1980s

As the disco era came to a close, a new generation of producers began adding synthesizers and slick drum machine beats to African American music. Michael Jackson and Prince were among the first post-disco black musicians to cross over to mainstream audiences. In its early years, mainstream R&B; was very pop-oriented. Notable 1980s R&B; musicians include Luther Vandross, the SOS Band, Mtume, Freddie Jackson, DeBarge, Loose Ends, and Stephanie Mills.

Tina Turner made a comeback during the second half of the 1980s, while Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson broke into the pop music charts with a series of hits. Richard J. Ripani wrote that Janet Jackson's third studio album ''Control'' (1986) was "important to the development of R&B; for a number of reasons", as she and her producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, "crafted a new sound that fuses the rhythmic elements of funk and disco, along with heavy doses of synthesizers, percussion, sound effects, and a rap music sensibility." Ripani wrote that "the success of ''Control'' led to the incorporation of stylistic traits of rap over the next few years, and Janet Jackson was to continue to be one of the leaders in that development." That same year, Teddy Riley began producing R&B; recordings that included hip hop influences. This combination of R&B; style and hip hop rhythms was termed ''new jack swing'', and was applied to artists such as Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, Guy, Jodeci, and Bell Biv DeVoe.

1990s

In contrast to the works of Boyz II Men, Babyface and similar artists, other R&B; artists and groups from this same period began adding even more of a hip hop sound to their work, like the innovative group Jodeci. The synthesizer-heavy rhythm tracks of new jack swing was replaced by grittier East Coast hip hop-inspired backing tracks, resulting in a genre labeled ''hip hop soul'' by producer Sean Combs who also had mentored group Jodeci in the beginning and helped them with their unique look. The style became less popular by the end of the 1990s, but later experienced a resurgence.

During the mid 1990s, Michael Jackson, R Kelly, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Aaliyah, TLC, SWV and Boyz II Men brought contemporary R&B; to the mainstream. Janet Jackson's self-titled fifth studio album ''janet.'' (1993), which came after her historic multi-million dollar contract with Virgin Records, sold over twenty million copies worldwide. Boyz II Men and Carey recorded several ''Billboard'' Hot 100 #1 hits, including "Fantasy", "One Sweet Day", a collaboration between both acts, which became the longest-running #1 hit in Hot 100 history. Carey, Boyz II Men and TLC released albums in 1994 and 1995—''Daydream'', ''II'' , and ''CrazySexyCool'' respectively — that sold over ten million copies, earning them diamond and also making them the best selling female R&B; group of all time.

In the late 1990s, neo soul, which added 1970s soul influences to the hip hop soul blend, arose, led by artists such as D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell. Mariah Carey was well known to incorporate her pop, R&B; tunes with hip-hop and rap. Hill and Missy Elliott further blurred the line between R&B; and hip hop by recording both styles. Beginning in 1995, the Grammy Awards enacted the Grammy Award for Best R&B; Album, with ''II'' by Boyz II Men becoming the first recipient. The award was later received by TLC for ''CrazySexyCool'' in 1996, Tony Rich for ''Words'' in 1997, Erykah Badu for ''Baduizm'' in 1998 and Lauryn Hill for ''The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'' in 1999. At the end of 1999, ''Billboard'' magazine ranked Valerie Shane Telequen and Janet Jackson as the first and second most successful artists of the 1990s.

2000s–2010s

By the 2000s, the cross-pollination between R&B; and hip hop had increased. Mainstream modern R&B; has a sound more based on rhythm than hip hop soul had, and lacks the hardcore and soulful urban "grinding" feel on which hip-hop soul relied. That rhythmic element descends from new jack swing. R&B; began to focus more on solo artists rather than groups as the 2000s progressed. Allison Renae Holker (born February 6, 1988, Orem, Utah) is an American dancer. Most famously known from her appearances on the TV Show "So You Think You Can Dance", where she was a contestant in season 2 and an all-star in season 7, Holker is also credited with a wide variety of work in film, television and concert tours.

Holker grew up in Orem, Utah and graduated from Timpanogos High School in June 2006. She graduated from the same school as fellow SYTYCD contestant Chelsie Hightower, but graduated one year earlier. She began formal dance training at "The Dance Club" studio in Orem, Utah when she was four years old and began teaching at the same studio when she was 16. She was recognized for her dance talents by winning various awards, and went on to perform with Earth, Wind and Fire, at the opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympic Games in 2002, and in the Disney movies High School Musical and High School Musical 2. She has also been seen in various commercials and in the Top 8 on So You Think You Can Dance, Season 2, and in the SYTYCD nationwide tour. Holker has taught at different dance conventions and workshops across the country. She performed with a show called "Ballroom with a Twist," choreographed by Louis Van Amstel, and toured with AMERICAN IDOL's Clay Aiken. Holker has also been featured in the Jar of Hearts music video by Christina Perri.

In May 2008, she gave birth to a daughter, Weslie Fowler.

Travis Michael Wall (born September 16, 1987, Virginia Beach, Virginia), an American dancer and dance instructor specializing in contemporary dance and hip-hop. He is best known for his 2006 appearance as a competitor on the second season of the television show ''So You Think You Can Dance'', which airs on the Fox Network. As of 2009, he is currently a choreographer for the show. In 2011, he was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the show's seventh season.

Early life

Wall grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His mother, owner and operator of the eponymous Denise Wall's Dance Energy, recalls putting him in a walker and watching him imitate the dancers. He began dancing at the age of three, training at his mother's studio, and competing in a number of conventions.

Career

Early career and training

In 1999, he won the Junior National Outstanding Dancer Scholarship Award. On April 27, 2000, at age 12, he started a two-year run in ''The Music Man'' on Broadway, playing a resident of River City/Winthrop Paroo understudy. This gig led to him being chosen to perform at the 2000 New York City Dance Alliance's closing night gala. In 2006, New York City Dance Alliance awarded Wall its Teen Outstanding Dancer of the Year award and he toured with them for a year.

''So You Think You Can Dance''

In 2006, at the age of 18, Wall competed on the second season of the show ''So You Think You Can Dance'' (SYTYCD), making it to the final four contestants and coming in second place to overall winner Benji Schwimmer. Wall was praised by the judges as the most technically talented dancer in the competition. Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman have listed Wall, his brother Danny Tidwell, Season 4's Will Wingfield and Season 5's Kayla Radomski as the most talented dancers on the show.

While on the show, Wall danced in Mia Michaels "The Bench" routine for which she later won an Emmy for Outstanding Choreography. During the Fall of 2006, Wall toured the United States with the top 10 dancers from the ''So You Think You Can Dance'' competition. He returned to the show in 2008 during the Season 4 auditions to teach choreography. He did a surprise audition on the 4th episode as "Danielle Chorizo".

On July 23, 2009, Wall returned to ''So You Think You Can Dance'' along with fellow Season 2 contestant Heidi Groskreutz on the 100th episode of the show, to perform their Emmy award winning piece "The Bench" choreographed by Mia Michaels.

Post-''SYTYCD''

Wall, along with Tidwell and many previous finalists of ''So You Think You Can Dance'', performed during the second annual ''Idol Gives Back'' charity event on April 9, 2008. Nigel Lythgoe produced both shows at the time.

Wall performs regularly with American Dance Artists, in Delmarva, as well as for Evolution dance company in Los Angeles, California. He teaches students contemporary dance at NUVO, a dance convention that tours the nation. In 2007, Wall and Ivan Koumaev made a dance video called ''Its About Time'' designed to be for the viewer's entertainment rather than for instructional purposes like most dance videos.

Wall was in the 2008 Disney movie ''Bedtime Stories'' alongside ''SYTYCD'' Season 3 contestant, Lacey Schwimmer, which starred Adam Sandler. In 2010 Wall worked as an assistant choreographer for the Academy Awards, alongside Mia Michaels and Brian Friedman.

''So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit: Cardio Funk'' was one of two home exercise videos released by the producers of ''SYTYCD''. Wall choreographed a contemporary dance and corresponding cool-down routine for the video.

Wall choreographed and performed in an ensemble piece featuring New York City Ballet principal ballerina Tiler Peck to a piece by Nuttin' But Stringz for ABC's ''Dancing with the Stars'' April 13, 2010 episode in a feature called "Macy's Stars of Dance".

Sonya Tayeh is an American dancer and choreographer. Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Detroit, Michigan Tayeh started dancing in college and graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in 2002. She is a guest judge and choreographer on the Fox television series ''So You Think You Can Dance'', directing jazz and contemporary dance numbers.

Career

Tayeh has appeared in various episodes over four seasons of the Fox show, ''So You Think You Can Dance''. She has instructed dance at the Edge Performing Arts Center, the Millennium Dance Complex, and the Tayeh Dance Company in Los Angeles, California and the Dance Studios Tour specializing in contemporary funk and progressive contact.

In January 2009, Tayeh was named as one of Dance Magazine's "25 to watch".

Style and Influences

Tayeh has described her unique choreographing style as "combat jazz," because "[i]t’s staccato, aggressive, and engaged, even when it’s slow. I’m always ready for battle."

She cites the influence of Detroit culture — the "home of Motown, Techno, and other forms of inventive dance" — as a foundation for her art. After exploring the possibilities of "freestyle movement," Tayeh studied form and technique at Wayne State University, where she drew on dance history, anatomy, and performance to develop a style that is built on core strength, aggressive partner interaction, and quirky, stylized movements.

Stacey Tookey is a dancer and choreographer born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Emmy-nominated Tookey is best known for her frequent appearances as a Resident Choreographer and Guest Judge on the Canadian and American versions of the television show ''So You Think You Can Dance''("SYTYCD"). Tookey served as director on the sold-out 2009 ''So You Think You Can Dance Canada'' Tour. She also choreographed the music video for Christina Perri's ''Jar of Hearts''.

Career

Tookey has worked with legendary musical artists such as Justin Timberlake, Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Michael Bublé. She has also performed in concerts as a member of Mia Michaels company, R.A.W. and with Parsons Dance Project in Seoul, Korea. Other performances include ''Carmen'' with the Houston Grand Opera and assistant choreographer of ''A Few Good Men Dancin'' on Broadway. In 2002, Tookey relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada where she was an original cast member for the entire five year run of Celine Dion's show ''A New Day...'' at Caesars Palace. Other performances with Celine include the Oprah Winfrey Show, The 2004 World Music Awards, Larry King Live, CNN’s New Year's Eve Countdown Live in Times Square and A&E;’s biography of Celine Dion. She has been slimed on National T.V. dancing alongside Justin Timberlake at the 2007 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.

She was nominated for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography for So You Think You Can Dance (season 5) in 2010. She was nominated again in 2011 for her work on the show's seventh season.

Tookey represented Canada at the Adeline Genee awards in London, England. She has danced with Ballet British Columbia, Fusion Dance Company and as a member of the NBA’s Grizzlies Extreme Dance Team. In addition to performing, Tookey teaches master classes in Mexico, Italy, Argentina and throughout North America and has been the recipient of many choreography awards.

Tookey resides in L.A. and is on the faculty of the ''Nuvo'' dance convention.

Married to actor ''Gene Gabriel'' October 16, 2005

Stacey is the eldest child to parents Shelley and Wayne Tookey. She has a younger brother, Kevin Tookey, and a younger sister Kelci Tookey. Stacey's mother owns a Dance studio, Shelley's Dance Company (SDC) in Edmonton, AB. Her entire family dances, and Stacey was raised in her mothers studio learning everything she could about their shared passion.
