DJ Dub Rush – Da Gathering

January 2nd, 2012

Here’s a quality 94 darkside jam I’ve been hoarding. Evil Dead 2 samples, some nicely panned think-work and eerie synths, everything you could want in a seriously dark jungle track – up there with the darkest creepiest stuff by Mega City 2, Love Dove Jay, etc. Dub Rush did a bunch of great singles on his label Back II Back, most of which are pretty hard to find now… I’ve only got a couple of them but the rest are sort of permanently on my want list, waiting for copies to show up on the cheap. The only Back II Back track I’ve posted so far was this one track by by X Rated, which is one of the easier to find tracks but still pretty essential.

DJ Syko – Ruffage 2 The System

December 31st, 2011

Here’s a frantic 94 track by DJ Syko of Syko & Mak / Parliament Records fame, on the Parliament sublabel Candidate Records. Nowhere near as sampleadelic as his earlier singles, this tune combines choppy amens + funky mule break (a great combo) with some shrill siren noises and standard 94 pads, plus that “ow!” hit sound used most famously in Edge #1. The breakdown brings in classic Sinnamon “Need You Now” vocals as used in all sorts of other hardcore/jungle tunes. This might not be my favorite Candidate single for listening purposes (I prefer the Persons Unknown singles), but I definitely find myself spinning this more than those singles lately… it juts seems to blend well with other tunes, and those first few moments when both drum layeres and the sirens are firing just sounds totally bonkers to me.
Also, the price is right on this one, as opposed to that Haute Control single that always goes for $$ (or PM#1). All in all, a nice sleeper release people might want to check if they already know some of the other Parliament / Candidate stuff.

Vibrations (1996) now on Network Awesome

I posted last year about one of my favorite so-bad-it’s-good movies, Vibrations… well, Network Awesome has the whole thing up now. Enjoy!

Secret Squirrel – Comming On Dark

December 27th, 2011

Last of my Florida posts.. hope everyone had a good X-mas & Boxing Day! This Secret Squirrel (aka Julian Hellfish) tune is great, sort of a revamp of the Mu Venom/DDT EP, with much beefier layered breaks in a 93 style (crazy time streching/pitch shifting). It’s actually pretty simple like the original, a dutch sounding rave synth makes a brief appearance but mostly it’s the original vocal samples and those crazy timestretched breaks.. more than enough for me though!

Harlequin – Fuck You And Your Family

December 24th, 2011

It’s Christmas Eve, rather than posting an X-mas track like Santa Hardcore and the 7 Midgets, here’s a totally crazy 95 amen smasher for people who don’t see their family much and are currently being reminded why. Some aggressive choppy intro beats lead to a vocal snippet of Robert Deniro from “the Untouchables”, crashing into some of the most brute force crazy low-bitrate amens I know of… not necessarily the most intricately sequenced, but just brutal chunky maximal break parts beating you over the head again and again. This one’s been a set-ender of choice for me recently, good for going out with a bang. Merry X-mas, will try to at least get one more post in before the new year.

Burning Chrome – Didn’t I Do The Best I Could

December 22nd, 2011

Here’s a great 5 tracker that’s been hard to grab the past year or two since some Discogs joker put up the sole copy for a couple hundred pounds, making everyone think it was worth that much. Shame since it’s a great EP, 5 really varied tracks almost all of which I could see playing in some context or another. Because of the large number of tracks the sound isn’t all that loud or razor sharp, but all the sequencing and overall mix is great on all the tunes, definitely playable and with some cool ideas sprinkled throughout. Burning Chrome is actually an alias by DJ Massive, who I’ve posted plenty of stuff by before and who hopefully will do an interview for the site sometime in the future.

I don’t think this particular track got much love from mixtapes back in the day, but it’s my personal favorite… some weird breaks leading up to a vocal drop and what sounds like a pitched up house beat combined with one of those “tip of my tongue” classic breaks I can’t ID right now. Since the other tracks are nearly as good, I’ll definitely try to rip another track or two in the near future.

Naughty Naughty – Free

December 18th, 2011

Here’s a great B-side I had on vinyl for years and never really appreciated, until hearing it at the start of this Fabio tape I was biking around to a lot this fall (thanks deep inside the oldskool for posting it!). Funny how listening to a track all those times can make it stick in your head, certainly explains how so many of the most in-demand tunes are the smaller pressing ones from popular mixtapes.

According to discogs info, it seems like this is most definitely NOT the “Naughty Naughty” who did a great alternate version of the Korgi’s “Need Your Lovin” (posted elsewhere on this site). It makes sense since this sounds pretty different from that track and those EPs, aside from some big well known samples it’s a bit deeper and more in-line with Rugged Vinyl 93 tunes than the NN series. Great stuff though!

Funky Junky – Rudeboy

December 14th, 2011

Here’s another ragga influenced track ala the Echo Minott one posted recently, though this is more of a proper 92 hardcore one. Just deep bass, a breakbeat, a kick drum, and some all-too-familiar ragga vocals…but all working perfectly together. It’s funny because tracks like this would have held very little appeal for me when I initially got into digging for 91-95 stuff, as I was always looking for the most maximal / crazy / chopped up tracks I can find. Years of listening though have definitely opened plenty of room for for sparser, more vibey tracks like this one…

Funky Junky did quite a few other releases on his label, all pretty solid (if not blow-your-brains-out amazing) stuff. Yardie “No Cocaine” is a favorite of mine, though people might know his Sonz-of-a-loop-da-loop sampling Rushing EP a bit better.

UI Changes coming soon!

December 8th, 2011

I’ve kept this site as bare bones as possible for the past 4 years, trying to keep it content-driven (all about the tunes). So I guess it’s time I spiff it up a bit… or at least hire a buddy of mine to do it. I’ll definitely try to keep it as usable as it is now, mainly I’ll just be giving more prominence to things like interviews which sadly get lost amidst the day to day tune posts.

If anyone has any other suggestions for neat features etc, or wants to point me to some super flashy amazing wordpress themes etc, feel free feel free to drop me a line or leave a comment below.
