I have always found it exciting and mysterious to just sit in some ordinary place
and give myself to it for hours. I try to be there completely and let that place
swallow me up in its rhythm, which goes on every hour of every day, with or
without me.

Garvey|Simon is pleased to present ALAN BRAY, an exhibition highlighting the
artist's newest casein tempera landscape paintings. This will be Bray's 7th solo
show in New York and his first with Garvey|Simon Art Access. The opening
reception will be held on Thursday, May 1, from 6-8pm; the artist will be present.
From small-town, central Maine, Alan Bray has earned a national reputation as
one of the most poetic and visionary contemporary painters of New England. His
mystical paintings quietly celebrate the phenomena and intricacy of nature in the
ordinary. Particularities of place, such as the branching of trees, the drifting and
melting of snow and the meandering flow of water reveal their structures to him.
He incorporates elements of memory and dream to achieve interconnectedness
between what is seen and what is deeply known.
The spirit of discovery from Bray's childhood adventures in the Maine woods and
the meditative maturity he learned from Italian Renaissance masters meld
together as fuel and fodder for his quietly peculiar compositions. After studying
at the Art Institute of Boston, and the University of Southern Maine, Bray traveled
to Italy in the early 1970s to study painting at the Villa Schifanola Graduate School
of Fine Arts in Florence. That experience continues to significantly inform his work
to this day. It was in Italy that he adopted a new medium: casein tempera, a milk-
based tempera paint that has virtually no drying time. Necessarily, his paintings
consist of thousands of tiny brush strokes, built up in layers, out of which his
vision advances from the foundation of a mirror-smooth void of white ground.
The New Yorker described his work as "meditations on landscape that are cool,
elegant, and blessedly devoid of prettiness... [They] evoke nature's majesty but
drain away its wildness, suggesting something of the poise and repose of Giotto
or Mantegna."
As a naturalist and painter alike, Bray is interested in what ordinarily goes
unobserved. "I paint what is right around me," he says. "Occasionally it's a big
subject, but more often it's a bird's nest or a farm pond." Bray's choice of humble
vistas (a cluster of pines rather than coastal Maine seascapes) belies the rich and
engaging soul found in his paintings, making them anything but ordinary.
What seems like a nice little landscape painting becomes increasingly odd the
longer you look at it. [Bray] captures the enigmatic quality of the ordinary and the
commonplace. And he's so sure of himself and what he's doing, he doesn't have

Alan Bray
Alan Bray (13 October 1948 – 25 November 2001) was a British historian and gay rights activist. He was a Roman Catholic and had a particular interest in Christianity's relationship to homosexuality.
Early life
Bray was born in Hunslet, Leeds, to a working-class family. His mother died when he was 12, an event that profoundly affected his relationships. He attended secondary school in Leeds, where he met his lifelong partner Graham Wilson. He attended Bangor University and spent a year at an Anglican seminary before beginning a career in civil service.
Gay rights activism
He became involved with the Gay Liberation Front in the 1970s and actively campaigned for gay rights. His interest in sexual politics influenced his work on history, which culminated in two books. His second book, The Friend, was published posthumously.
Legacy
The Roman Catholic Caucus of the Gay and Lesbian Christian Movement, of which Bray was a member, instituted a series of Alan Bray Memorial Lectures on Catholic theology and homosexuality. British historians Michael Hunter, Miri Rubin, and Laura Gowing co-edited the book Love, Friendship and Faith in Europe, 1300–1800 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005), a collection of essays inspired by Bray's idea of finding some universal component of homosexuality within the experiences of intimacy and friendship without "locating a discourse that identifies persons as homosexual." Nick Rumens's Queer Company: The Role and Meaning of Friendship in Gay Men's Work Lives (Ashgate, 2011), is also inspired by Alan Bray's scholarship.

Bray
Bray (Irish: Bré, meaning "hill", formerly Brí Chualann) is a town in north County Wicklow, Ireland. It is a busy urban centre and seaside resort, with a population of 31,872 making it the ninth largest urban area in Ireland at the 2011 census. It is situated about 20 km (12 mi) south of Dublin on the east coast. The town straddles the Dublin-Wicklow border, with a portion of the northern suburbs situated in County Dublin.
Bray's scenic location and proximity to Dublin make it a popular destination for tourists and day-trippers from the capital. Bray is home to Ireland's only film studios, Ardmore Studios, hosting Irish and international productions for film, television and advertising. Some light industry is located in the town, with business and retail parks concentrated largely on its southern periphery. Bray town centre has a range of shops serving the consumer needs of the surrounding area. Commuter links between Bray and Dublin are provided by rail, Dublin Bus and the M11 and M50 motorways.

I have always found it exciting and mysterious to just sit in some ordinary place
and give myself to it for hours. I try to be there completely and let that place
swallow me up in its rhythm, which goes on every hour of every day, with or
without me.

Garvey|Simon is pleased to present ALAN BRAY, an exhibition highlighting the
artist's newest casein tempera landscape paintings. This will be Bray's 7th solo
show in New York and his first with Garvey|Simon Art Access. The opening
reception will be held on Thursday, May 1, from 6-8pm; the artist will be present.
From small-town, central Maine, Alan Bray has earned a national reputation as
one of the most poetic and visionary contemporary painters of New England. His
mystical paintings quietly celebrate the phenomena and intricacy of nature in the
ordinary. Particularities of place, such as the branching of trees, the drifting and
melting of snow and the meandering flow of water reveal their structures to him.
He incorporates elements of memory and dream to achieve interconnectedness
between what is seen and what is deeply known.
The spirit of discovery from Bray's childhood adventures in the Maine woods and
the meditative maturity he learned from Italian Renaissance masters meld
together as fuel and fodder for his quietly peculiar compositions. After studying
at the Art Institute of Boston, and the University of Southern Maine, Bray traveled
to Italy in the early 1970s to study painting at the Villa Schifanola Graduate School
of Fine Arts in Florence. That experience continues to significantly inform his work
to this day. It was in Italy that he adopted a new medium: casein tempera, a milk-
based tempera paint that has virtually no drying time. Necessarily, his paintings
consist of thousands of tiny brush strokes, built up in layers, out of which his
vision advances from the foundation of a mirror-smooth void of white ground.
The New Yorker described his work as "meditations on landscape that are cool,
elegant, and blessedly devoid of prettiness... [They] evoke nature's majesty but
drain away its wildness, suggesting something of the poise and repose of Giotto
or Mantegna."
As a naturalist and painter alike, Bray is interested in what ordinarily goes
unobserved. "I paint what is right around me," he says. "Occasionally it's a big
subject, but more often it's a bird's nest or a farm pond." Bray's choice of humble
vistas (a cluster of pines rather than coastal Maine seascapes) belies the rich and
engaging soul found in his paintings, making them anything but ordinary.
What seems like a nice little landscape painting becomes increasingly odd the
longer you look at it. [Bray] captures the enigmatic quality of the ordinary and the
commonplace. And he's so sure of himself and what he's doing, he doesn't have

Steve Wilkinson, longtime men’s tennis coach at Gustavus Adolphus College and founder of Tennis and Life Camps, passed away on Wednesday, January 21 at the age of 73 after courageously living with cancer for nearly seven years. Wilkinson spent 39 years (1971-2009) at the helm of the Gustavus men’s tennis program. His teams compiled 929 wins overall, the most victories in the history of collegiate men’s tennis. Steve Wilkinson, longtime men’s tennis coach at Gustavus Adolphus College and founder of Tennis and Life Camps, passed away on Wednesday, January 21 at the age of 73 after courageously living with cancer for nearly seven years.
Wilkinson spent 39 years (1971-2009) at the helm of the Gustavus men’s tennis program. His teams compiled 929 wins overall, the most victories in the history of collegiate men’s tennis.
Wilkinson was involved in numerous national tennis organizations, serving on the executive committees of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), and the United States Tennis Association (USTA). He was inducted into the U.S. Professional Tennis Association’s Hall of Fame, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Hall of Fame, the Gustavus Athletics Hall of Fame, the USTA Missouri Valley Hall of Fame, the Northern Tennis Association Hall of Fame, and the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame. He received the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s Tennis Educational Merit Award and The Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Iowa.
Wilkinson is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara, two daughters, Stephanie and Deborah, sons-in-law Scott and Jon, four grandchildren, Caroline, Eloise, Stephen, and Audrey, and many relatives and friends. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31 in at Christ Chapel on the Gustavus campus with Pastor Alan Bray of First Lutheran Church of St. Peter officiating.

Nel 1966 i The Casuals giungono in Italia dove, ottenuto un contratto con la CBS, e poi con la Joker etichetta della famosa casa discografica SAAR Records, pubblicano alcuni 45 giri in lingua italiana e nel 1967 con la Jolly, un album antologico, “Hour World”.
Il loro più grande successo discografico è “Jesamine” del 1968, con questo singolo si affermarono nelle classifiche europee; tra le altre incisioni italiane bisogna ricordare la canzone “Massachusetts”, cover dell'omonimo brano dei Bee Gees.
Nel 1969 la SAAR Records e i The Casuals partecipano anche al 19° Festival di Sanremo con la canzone “Alla fine della strada”, eseguita in abbinamento con Junior Magli.
Dopo lo scioglimento del gruppo, Alan Taylor formerà dapprima i Ping Pong, poi i Bulldog, i Barbados Climax e contribuirà nel 1978 come produttore per la SAAR al lancio di Vasco Rossi e come coautore della canzone “Albachiara”.

Formed by Howard Newcomb (guitar, vocals), John Roy Tebb (organ, vocals), Alan Taylor (bass, flute, vocals), Michael Bray and Rob O 'Brien (drums), Ian Bruce Good (guitar, harmonica) and Steve Wallace (bass), the band began playing in Liverpool's local.
In 1966, The Casuals came to Italy, where they obtained a contract with CBS and after with the Joker label, part of the famous record company SAAR Records. Under this label they have published some singles, also in Italian and in 1967 with the Jolly label, an anthology album, "Hour World" .
In 1968 with the single “Jesamine”, they have achieved their biggest success in the european charts; among other Italian recordings, we must remember the italian version of “Massachusetts”, covered from the Bee Gees homonym song.
In 1969, SAAR Records and The Casuals have participated at the 19th Sanremo Festival with the song " Alla fine della strada ", performed in partnership with Junior Magli.
After the dissolution of the group, Alan Taylor will continue his musical carreer with new groups as the Ping Pong, then the Bulldog and the Barbados Climax. In 1978 he will contribute as a producer for the SAAR to the launch of Vasco Rossi and as co-author of the song “Albachiara”.

Space: 1999, conhecida no Brasil por Espaço: 1999, é uma série de televisão de ficção científica britânica dos anos 70. Teve duas temporadas de 24 episódios cada uma, concebidos por Gerry Anderson e Sylvia Anderson para a ITV. A série conta a história dos ocupantes de uma base lunar chamada Alpha, e sua viagem pelo espaço, depois que a Lua fora lançada para fora da órbita por uma explosão nuclear, ocorrida pelo acúmulo de resíduos radioativos produzidos pelos reatores nucleares na Terra.
