17. The Popular Front
France Since 1871 (HIST 276)
A plethora of Far Right and fascist organizations emerged in the wake of World War I. Economic depression, nationalism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia all played a part in this upsurge. On the left, the tension between communist revolutionaries and socialist reformers was reconciled, for a time, in the Popular Front government of Leon Blum. While the Popular Front would eventually fall, it pioneered many of the reforms and progressive measures that French workers enjoy today.

Jaffa - Posters
Director: Mischa Rozema
Production Co: PostPanic
Agency: Sek Grey (Finland)
The retro-feel present throughout the commercial, comes from the JAFFA brand itself. On the Finnish market since 1949, the orange drink is still in the top 3 of most popular soft drinks in the country. JAFFA is part of Hartwall which is owned by Heineken International.
The internationally awarded 85 year old graphic designer Erik Bruun is best loved for his iconic posters and adverts for Hartwell and his work has been awarded the prestigious Pro Finlandia medal. You could call him a Finnish institution. Not only does PostPanic’s commercial make Bruun’s work come alive but he can be seen for the first time in the flesh, sketching the Jaffa logo.
Director Mischa Rozema wanted to create a commercial based on Bruun’s legacy. This time though, Mischa had to base his visual direction on someone else’s graphic aesthetic rather than his own.
The result, another trademark visually unique mixed media film, combining live action with 2d/3d animation, motion graphics, stock footage and visual effects.
Director Mischa Rozema says he was inspired by the look that Bruun created:
“ The story needed to be told by the means of the actual posters. We had to create more 2D landscape to imaginary landscape where we go from a poster to another one. We had to choose the posters that had the most in them landscape and storytelling wise. I was inspired by the simplicity and retro feeling which reminded me of Saul Bass’s work. Bruun’s work has that same contemporary feeling and textures use that makes it real”

Dolina Soče – Soca Valley – Valle dell'Isonzo – Soča Tal
Soča Valley http://soca-valley.com is a Slovenian outdoor paradise .. Fly fishing, rafting, kayaking, canyoning, walking, mountaineering, skiing and rock climbing, mountain biking and paragliding are only some of the most popular adventures in the valley. Untouched beauties of Triglav National Park, thematic trails and breathtaking views, mountain pastures, hundreds of years of local heritage and know how hidden in the local products, excellent restaurants, famous events or just romantic walks alongside the banks of the emerald river makes the valley a perfect place for active and green minded people.
The valley is also known for the Isonzo front. During the World War I it was a place of the one of the world’s biggest and bloodiest mountain battles. Hemingway’s novel Farwell to the arms describes some of the events. Reminds of the battle lines and fortifications, all of them placed in the astonishing natural surroundings are connected to the Walks of Peace thematic trail today.
There is only an hour drive from the sheer mountain valley to the Adriatic coast. The mixture of Mediterranean and alpine climates, geographic shapes and wild life is quite obvious in the way of local everyday life too - hard working and reliable mountain people are blessed with the Mediterranean hospitality and joy of life. The Soča Valley is a good place to be.

Cockroach Controlled Mobile Robot (2006) - Garnet Hertz - High Resolution Video Overview
Project: http://conceptlab.com/roachbot/
Video Transcription:
[00:04] Cockroach Controlled Mobile Robot
"Cockroach Controlled Mobile Robot" is an experimental robotic system that uses a live insect as the controller, or driver, of a three-wheeled robot.
[00:30] Robot Control
The system is controlled by a Giant Madagascan Hissing Cockroach, about 5 cm, or 2 inches, in length. The insect is placed on top of a modified computer trackball, with an adjustable harness that helps the insect stay on top of the ball. The ball operates like a two axis treadmill that controls the motion of the larger robot: as the cockroach moves forward on the ball, the robot moves forward. If the cockroach scurries to the left, the robot moves to the left. If the cockroach scurries to the right, the robot moves to the right.
[01:25] Sensors & Feedback
The robot also features a navigation and sensor system to help the insect avoid smashing the robot into nearby objects. An array of distance sensors looks out in front of the robot. When an object is a few feet in front of the robot, the sensors detect the object and shine lights toward the insect from the direction of the obstacle.
Banks of small lights are positioned around the front of the cockroach in attempt to build an immersive, virtual environment. Since cockroaches tend to avoid light, the insect should -- in theory -- turn into the dark and therefore steer the robot away from obstacles.
[02:09] Motivations
This project is inspired by three key influences.
[02:15] Biomimetics
First:. Biomimetics. an approach to technological development that looks toward living, organic systems as a source of inspiration. Specifically within the field of robotics, cockroaches are admired and used as models for the navigation logic and physical construction of mobile robotic systems.
[02:40] Cyborg
Second: The Cyborg. Popular culture appears to have a recurring interest in the human-machine and animal-machine hybrid. This project strives to construct a literal cybernetic organism that plays in and off of cultural and scientific visions of synthetic and organic hybridity.
[03:03] Computational/Biological
Thirdly, the Computational and Biological. This project, in essence, is a robotic system in which the computer based microcontroller is replaced with a biologically-based insect. In the process, the operating machine highlights key characteristics of being biological. The robot and insect display attributes like unpredictability, laziness, irrationality and emotional response.
[03:32] Audience Response
The mobility of the robot makes the intentions of the insect legible to a wide and diverse audience. Individuals tend to watch the robot for extended periods of time, empathizing with the insect, and trying to discern whether or not the organism is controlling or being controlled by the technology... and whether it is aware of, immersed in, or pleased by its synthetic and mediated environment.

The Source Family (Trailer)
Drag City Film Distribution announces the forthcoming May 2013 theatrical run of THE SOURCE FAMILY (previously titled THE SOURCE), the feature length documentary directed by Maria Demopoulos and Jodi Wille about Father Yod and The Source Family’s radical experiment in ‘70s utopian living. The Source Family’s outlandish lifestyle, popular celebrity hangout restaurant, rock band, and beautiful women made them the darlings of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip; but their outsider ideals and controversial spiritual leader, Father Yod, instigated local authorities. Yod was a visionary health food restaurateur, war hero, and judo champion who had thirteen wives and fronted the now legendary psych band Ya Ho Wa 13. The family fled to Hawaii, leading to their dramatic demise. Years later, family members surface and the rock band reforms, revealing how the experience shaped their lives in the most unexpected ways.
These personal accounts, along with interviews with outsiders, make up the interviews in the film. However, the story is largely cinematic, expressed through the use of the group’s extensive film and audio archive maintained by Isis Aquarian, one of Father's wives and a central character in the documentary (as well as being associate producer). The film’s soundtrack is composed entirely of original Source Family music produced from 1971-1975. This treasure trove of interviews and never-before-seen home movies, photographs, and original music provides an unparalleled insider’s view into the cult/commune phenomenon and wildly outside-the-box social experimentation of the early ‘70s—as well as a being a wholly unique California story.
