Converting to Scientific Notation - YourTeacher.com - Math Help
For a complete lesson on converting to scientific notation, go to www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to convert a number from standard notation to scientific notation by first writing a decimal point in the number so that there is only one digit to the left of the decimal point. For example, to write 642000 in scientific notation, first write the number so that there is only one digit to the left of the decimal point, which in this case is 6.42000. Next, count the number of places that the decimal point must be moved to get back to the original number, which in this case is 5 places. This number will be the exponent on the power of 10. So 642000 can be written in scientific notation as 6.42 x 10^5. Note that the exponent is positive, because the original number is a whole number. If the original number were a decimal, the exponent would be negative. For example, 0.059 written in standard form is 5.9 x 10^(-2).

Scientific Notation - Explained!
Scientists have to work with some very large and some very small numbers. To represent these numbers more easily, they use scientific notation. Scientific notation relies on powers of 10. This video gives examples of how to represent a large and small number and explains powers of ten.

Scientific Notation - YourTeacher.com - Pre Algebra Help
For a complete lesson on scientific notation, go to www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn that a number is in scientific notation if it composed of a whole number or decimal between 1 and 10, times a power of ten. For example, 4.13 x 10^8 is in scientific notation. To convert a number from scientific notation to standard notation, note that a positive exponent means that the decimal point is moved to the right, and a negative exponent means that the decimal point is moved to the left. For example, to convert 4.13 x 10^8 to standard notation, since the exponent is positive 8, move the decimal 8 places to the right, to get 413000000. To write a number in scientific notation, first write a decimal point in the number so that there is only one digit to the left of the decimal point, so here we have 6.42000. (Notice that there now is only one digit to the left of the decimal point.) Next, count the number of places that we would need to move the decimal point in order to get back to the original number, 642000. Since we would need to move the decimal point 5 places to the right to get back to the original number, 642000, we would need to multiply 6.42000 times 10 to the 5th power. Notice that our exponent is positive. That's because we needed to move the exponent to the right to get back to the original number. So 642000 can be written in scientific notation as 6.42000 times 10 to ...

GCE (A-level) Physics G2 Standard Form (1 of 3)
For part 2: www.youtube.com Standard form (sometimes called scientific notation) is a format often used to express large and small numbers in science and engineering. Note that the term 'standard form is also used to describe the format of some algebraic equation - this is not the use being described here.. This if the 1st part (of 3) of a lesson explaining standard form. It covers the basics - powera of 10 - and explains the correct use of the mantissa.

Scientific Notation
Get Free iOS apps by email! bit.ly Mahalo math expert Allison Moffett shows you how to convert basic notation to scientific notation. Scientific Notation --------------------------------------------------------------------- For very large or very small numbers, it is sometimes simpler to use "scientific notation." Refer to the image below for the general form for scientific notation. Convert Number to Scientific Notation --------------------------------------------------------------------- In order to convert 23415 into scientific notation, start to the right of the last digit and count how many decimals back it takes for the number to be greater than or equal to one and less than 10. The number of decimal places it takes is the exponential number. Read more by visiting our page at: www.mahalo.com
