Plot
The great Chicago White Sox team of 1919 is the saddest team to ever win a pennant. The team is bitter at their penny pincher owner, Charles Comiskey, and at their own teammates. Gamblers take advantage of this opportunity to offer some players money to throw the series. (Most of the players didn't get as much as promised.) But Buck Weaver and the great Shoeless Joe Jackson turn back at the last minute and try to play their best. The Sox actually almost come back from a 3-1 deficit. Two years later, the truth breaks out and the Sox are sued on multiple counts. They are found innocent by the jury but baseball commissioner Landis has other plans. The eight players are suspended for life, and Buck Weaver, for the rest of his life, tries to clear his name.

1919. The year America saw major league baseball played a whole new way...underhanded.
The Scandal That Rocked A Nation
The inside story of how the national pastime became a national scandal.
When the cheering stopped, there were... Eight Men Out.
No player who throws ball games will ever play professional baseball again.
Chick Gandil: You go back to Boston and turn seventy grand at the drop of a hat? I find that hard to believe.::Sport Sullivan: You say you can find seven men on the best club that ever took the field willin' to throw the World Series? I find *that* hard to believe.::Chick Gandil: You never played for Charlie Comiskey.
[about their opponents]::1st Cincinnati Reds Player: These guys don't look so tough.::2nd Cincinnati Reds Player: Yeah, that's what Custer said when the Indians took the field.
Ring Lardner: [serenading White Sox after game 5, to the tune of "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles"] I'm forever blowing ballgames, pretty ballgames in the air. I come from Chi, I hardly try, just go to bat and fade and die. Fortune's coming my way, that's why I hardly care. I'm forever blowing ballgames, and the gamblers treat us fair.
[Shoeless Joe Jackson is talking to his bat]::Shoeless Joe: Big whop now. Big whop, Betsy; you tell me when.::Freddie: Does it ever answer you, Joe?::Lefty Williams: Probably sleeps with it, too.::Lefty Williams: Lay off, you guys.::Hap Felsch: You crackers stick together, huh?::Swede Risberg: Ask it for a triple, Joe. You hear me?::Freddie: 60 years since the Civil War, Lefty. Ease up.::Hap Felsch: Besides, you guys lost. It was in all the papers.::Freddie: That wouldn't help Jackson none.::[Players laugh]::Lefty Williams: Just leave him be.
[Burns and Maharg are discussing Eddie Cicotte]::Bill Burns: Eddie's gettin' too old for this. I know what it's like. You walk out there with your arm hangin.::Billy Maharg: You couldn't pitch when you was young, Burnsie.::Bill Burns: Eddie's the key. If we don't get him, we can forget about it.
[Atell and Rothstein are discussing the plan to fix the series]::Abe Atell: They say that six or seven guys. I find that hard to believe.::Arnold Rothstein: Doesn't surprise me.::Abe Atell: Yeah, but they're the champs.::Arnold Rothstein: You were champ, Abe, you went down for the bucks.::Abe Atell: This is different.::Arnold Rothstein: Look, champ. I know guys like that. I grew up with them. I was the fat kid they wouldn't let play. "Sit down, fat boy'. That's what they'd say "Sit down, maybe you'll learn something." Well, I learned something alright. Pretty soon, I owned the game, and those guys I grew up with come to me with their hats in their hands. Tell me, champ, all those years of puggin', how much money did you make?::Abe Atell: The honest fights or the ones I tanked?::Arnold Rothstein: Altogether, I must've made ten times that amount betting on you and I never took a punch.::Abe Atell: Yeah, but I was champ. Featherweight champeen of the world!::Arnold Rothstein: Yesterday. That was yesterday.::Abe Atell: No A.R. you're wrong. I was champ, and can't nothin take that away.
Kid Gleason: People are human.
Ring Lardner: Sports writers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your bar privileges.
Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis: Regardless of the verdict of juries... no player who throws a ball game... no player who undertakes, or promises to throw a game... no player who sits in conference with a bunch of crooked players and gamblers where the ways and means of throwing a ball game are discussed, and does not promptly tell his club about it... will ever play professional baseball again.
[Some New Jersey fans are arguing on whether a Hoboken outfielder is Joe Jackson (the outfielder is, in fact, Shoeless Joe)]::New Jersey Fan #1: You ever see him play?::New Jersey Fan #2: Yeah, I saw pictures.::New Jersey Fan #1: Pictures [scoffs]::Buck Weaver: I saw him play.::New Jersey Fan #1: Yeah? What do you think?::Buck Weaver: He was the best. Run, hit, throw... he was the best.::New Jersey Fan #1: So what do you think? Is it him?::Buck Weaver: Nah. Those fellas are all gone now.

Abraham Washington "Abe" Attell (February 22, 1883 – February 7, 1970), known in the boxing world as Abe "The Little Hebrew" Attell, was a boxer who became known for his record-setting six-year reign as World Featherweight Champion. Said to be a friend of the gangster Arnold Rothstein, Attell was charged (and acquitted) of game fixing in the Black Sox Scandal in 1919 and was implicated in other sports controversies.
Attell was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Jewish parents. Many sources give his year of birth as 1884, but in an article published in the October 1961 issue of Cavalier magazine, he stated that he had turned 78 that year. There also is an extant copy of his passport that gives his birth year as 1883. Growing up in a mostly Irish neighborhood, he was often involved in fights with neighborhood boys. He said as a kid, he sometimes had up to 10 bouts each day. After his father abandoned the family when Attell was 13, he sold newspapers to earn money. Selling at the corner of 8th and Market, where the Mechanics Pavilion was, Attell was able to see the fight between Solly Smith and George Dixon for the world's Featherweight championship. With that, Attell and his brothers Caesar and Monte became convinced that maybe they had futures in boxing.
Rocky Marciano (born Rocco Francis Marchegiano; September 1, 1923 – August 31, 1969) was an American professional boxer and the World Heavyweight Champion from September 23, 1952, to April 27, 1956. Marciano is the only champion to hold the heavyweight title and go untied and undefeated throughout his career. Marciano defended his title six times.
Marciano was born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts to Pierino Marchegiano and Pasqualina Picciuto. Both of his parents were immigrants from Italy: his father was from Ripa Teatina, Abruzzo, while his mother was from San Bartolomeo in Galdo, Campania. Rocky had three sisters—Alice, Concetta and Elizabeth—and two brothers—Sonny and Peter. When he was about eighteen months old, he got pneumonia, from which he almost died.
In his youth, he played baseball, worked out on homemade weightlifting equipment (later in his life, Marciano was also a client of Charles Atlas) and used a stuffed mail bag that hung from a tree in his back yard as a heavy bag. He attended Brockton High School, where he played both baseball and football. However, he was cut from the school baseball team because he had joined a church league, violating a school rule forbidding players from joining other teams. He dropped out of school after finishing tenth grade.
Howard Allan Stern (born January 12, 1954) is an American radio personality, television host, author, actor and photographer best known for his radio show which was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2005. He gained wide recognition in the 1990s where he was labeled a "shock jock" for his outspoken and sometimes controversial style. Stern has been exclusive to Sirius XM Radio, a subscription-based satellite radio service, since 2006. The son of a former recording and radio engineer, Stern wished to pursue a career in radio at the age of five. While at Boston University he worked at the campus station WTBU before a brief stint at WNTN in Newton, Massachusetts.
He developed his on-air personality when he landed positions at WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, WCCC in Hartford and WWWW in Detroit. In 1981, he was paired with his current newscaster and co-host Robin Quivers at WWDC in Washington, D.C. Stern then moved to WNBC in New York City in 1982 to host afternoons until his firing in 1985. He re-emerged on WXRK that year, and became one of the most popular radio personalities during his 20-year tenure at the station. Stern's show is the most-fined radio program, after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued fines to station licensees for allegedly indecent material that totaled $2.5 million. Stern has won Billboard's Nationally Syndicated Air Personality of the Year award eight times, and is one of the highest-paid figures in radio.
Dave Attell (born January 18, 1965) is an American stand-up comedian and the host of Comedy Central's Insomniac with Dave Attell and The Gong Show with Dave Attell.
Born in Queens, New York, to a Jewish family, he grew up in Rockville Centre, New York and now lives in New York City. Attell's initial motivation to perform stand-up comedy is attributed to his indecisiveness as to what he should do after college. In 1987 he graduated from New York University with a degree in communications. Like many other fledgling comedians, he worked menial jobs during the day and put in his time at comedy clubs at night. He worked his first gig at Governor's in Levittown and, according to Attell, "totally bombed".[citation needed] After years of honing his act, he found himself being described as a "comedian's comedian".[citation needed] When working a club, the other comedians, such as Mike Royce (a producer/writer on Everybody Loves Raymond), David Juskow (a performer on TV Funhouse), Kevin Brennan (from Saturday Night Live and HBO's One Night Stand) and Jon Stewart, would come in to watch his act. While the audience didn't always follow his up-front delivery, fellow comedians were refreshed by his originality.[citation needed]
Guglielmo Papaleo (September 19, 1922 – November 23, 2006) was an American professional boxer, better known as Willie Pep. Pep boxed a total of 1956 rounds in the 241 bouts during his 26 year career, a considerable number of rounds and fights even for a fighter of his era. His final record was 229-11-1 with 65 knockouts. Pep, known for his speed and finesse, is considered to be one of the best fighters of the 20th century and was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. Pep was voted as the #1 featherweight of the 20th Century by the Associated Press and ranked the #1 featherweight of all-time by the International Boxing Research Organization in 2005.
Pep first fought as an amateur in 1937. At the time, amateur boxers from Connecticut were allowed to fight for money. It was during the Great Depression hit and Pep's father was earning $15 per week at the Works Progress Administration. Willie was soon earning more in one night of fighting each week. When his parents found out he was boxing, his mother was worried for him, but his father said that if he was making so much fighting on Fridays, maybe he should see about fighting on Tuesdays as well. "My old man, he was a sports fan" Pep later quipped.
Strange are the things we place our beliefs in
My apprehensions tear down the walls of the temple
The dollar signs that you crave
Mark the extent of your faith
Strange are the things we choose to believe in
My apprehensions tear down the walls of the temple
I'll never fit in, no faith to believe in
My resignation tears down the walls of the temple
Your cash betrays your true worth
Obtain your garden on Earth
Profane is the wealth that you believe in
Since you can't be wrong, shield your eyes from the sun
Its light will expose the poverty of your soul
Your wealth cannot save
This sacrament that will fade
Your opulence has no worth
You've sold your soul on this earth
And I'll break from your hold
My life cannot be bought and sold
This truth you will never get
And now you're so far in debt
And I'll break from your hold
My life cannot be bought and sold
This truth you will never get
Walk the path of the righteous ones, yeah
Don't come home to pray
Been on my feet for ten days now, baby
Just follow me, take my hand
The Black Ones will shine on tonight
The Black Ones will rise to new heights
The Black Ones will shine on tonight
The Black Ones will suffer through life
Can you talk with the demons, honey
Fall on mortal knees
Speak in tongues with the ones you love now
Drink with the spirits that have blessed you
The Black Ones will rise to new heights
The Black Ones will suffer through life
The Black Ones, their souls will thrive
The Black Ones will shine on tonight
The Black Ones will rise to new heights
The Black Ones will suffer through life
The Black Ones, their souls will thrive
All life moves closer to death
Hold on to just one last breath
We don't know what time holds
Do you fear what's out there
We cling to the things of this earth
Trace your steps back to your birth
We don't know what time holds
We can't face this one fate
So I pray
One more day
I feel the pain, hold on to me in the night
I feel alive, don't let it end, give me life
Does time move in a straight line
I'll stand still or lag behind
Count the days till your fate
Hold on to what kills you
I'll awake
One more day
I feel the pain, hold on to me in the night
I feel alive, don't let it end, give me life
I can never walk away, I'm caught here forever
You can never follow me expecting to fly
All I've ever dreamed about is leaving forever
I am like the serpent who tries to devour itself
I feel the pain, hold on to me in the night
I feel alive, don't let it end, give me life
I feel the pain, hold on to me in the night
I feel alive, don't let it end, give me life
I can never walk away, I'm caught here forever
You can never follow me expecting to fly
All I've ever dreamed about is leaving forever
I am like the serpent who tries to devour itself
The toll of my deep inner life
Will force this world to make amends
I know that you've lost your way
Your empty life will never save you
You'll melt away from here
My own decline
Brings you to mind
The toll of my deep inner life
Will force this world to make amends
I know that you've lost your way
Your empty life will never save you
You'll melt away from here
My own decline
I confide
Drowning in this suicide
I can be free
My world won't cease to be
Hold out your hand
I'm half of who I am
The sky won't follow me
My heart is crying
The earth won't swallow me
I sit in silence
All it's splendor
Hear it crying
All it's longing
Hey, will the world turn upon me
Will the soul survive ultimately
Oh, will peace ever be found
When I drag my feet on hallowed ground
And I don't want to know what the future will hold
And I don't want to pray because I'm lost anyway
Hey, will the pain follow me there
Will I turn my back on despair
Oh, will the sun shine upon me
When the body dies, is the soul set free
And I don't want to know what the future will hold
And I don't want to pray because I'm lost anyway
Because your mind can close you in
And seclusion becomes a friend
I won't walk away
And my eyes can't fool me
When your world seems at an end
There's no reason to pretend
That things will be okay
And my eyes can't fool me
To your soul
I say, let it go
Because your mind can close you in
And seclusion becomes a friend
I won't walk away
The sun sets for the final time, the night feels fine
And we walk in the distant shadows to the end of time
We are one with the moonlit ocean, it ignores our sins
Baptized in it's healing waters, the new world now begins
It says, hold on, hold on now to the things that seem unreal
Don't let go of the love you feel
Yeah, I watched the sun die today
I sat alone as the light slipped away
And I know the earth becomes mine today, yeah
And the moon still shines from so far away
The love that keeps me here will never disappear
I won't fade away
And the earth and sea are mine
The sun may never shine
I won't fade away
The sun sets for the final time, the night feels fine
And we walk in the distant shadows to the end of time
We are one with the moonlit ocean, it ignores our sins
Baptized in it's healing waters, the new world now begins
It says, hold on, hold on now to the things that seem unreal
Don't let go of the love you feel
Yeah, I watched the sun die today
I sat alone as the light slipped away
And I know the earth becomes mine today, yeah
And the moon still shines from so far away
The love that keeps me here will never disappear
I won't fade away
The earth and sea are mine
The sun may never shine
I won't fade away
Hope will live on, within this love song
I know it's not real, yeah
The earth will still spin and time cannot end
I know it's not real
Hope will live on, within this love song
I know it's not real, yeah
The earth will still spin and time cannot end
Hey, will the world turn upon me
Will the soul survive ultimately
Oh, will peace ever be found
When I drag my feet on hallowed ground
And I don't want to know what the future will hold
And I don't want to pray because I'm lost anyway
Hey, will the pain follow me there

Oh, will the sun shine upon me

There's no reason to pretend
That things will be okay
And my eyes can't fool me
To your soul
I say, let it go
Because your mind can close you in
And seclusion becomes a friend
I won't walk away
So I pray now to the mother of all lies
Under the holy mountain, I see through her disguise
In the smoke of the afterlife, I dream with fallen gods
Chastised by heathen eyes, our human form is lost
I dream of time
And the withering of all mankind
In anguish sleep
Silently
The stench of life clings to my flesh
The redemption of my soul brings rest
Will the rapture ever cease
Will the visions die
Enjoy the solace found in the absence of mankind
So I dream now with the spirits of the lost
Divine hallucinations, I am one with the gods
Under the holy ground, my energy survives
Exhale the breath of life in the hall of empty eyes
I dream of time
And the withering of all mankind
In anguish sleep
Silently
Sometime near the end
I traveled amongst unknown men
They drug me
They bring peace
I will call the earth my home
I will follow where the shadows may roam
I dream of time
And the withering of all mankind
In anguish sleep
Silently
I dream of time
And the withering of all mankind
In anguish sleep
Silently
The stench of life clings to my flesh
The redemption of my soul brings rest
Will the rapture ever cease
Will the visions die
Enjoy the solace found in the absence of mankind
Sometime near the end
I traveled amongst unknown men
They drug me
They bring peace
I will call the earth my home
I will follow where the shadows may roam
So I pray now to the mother of all lies
Under the holy mountain, I see through her disguise
In the smoke of the afterlife, I dream with fallen gods
And the stars burn for me
And the night is my only friend
I should rule this
I'm the master of so many men
So lonely
Been alone for too many years
So wretched
To suffer the mortal man's fears
This world was made to mock me
The human race has damned me
I become the lies they speak
Won't you join me in my anguish
Won't you comfort me in this abyss
Desire of me, satisfy me, I'm yours
Crucify me like the one that you love
I'll watch this world burn
I'll watch this world burn
Won't you join me in my anguish
Won't you comfort me in this abyss
Desire of me, satisfy me, I'm yours
Crucify me like the one that you love
And the stars burn for me
And the night is my only friend
I should rule this
I'm the master of so many men
So lonely
Been alone for too many years
So wretched
This mystic voyage
Transcending space and time
This journey ends within my mind
All thoughts turn inward
Enter this world sublime
Where I exist within my mind
And the laws of the earth mean nothing to those
Who leave this world far behind
And the words that I speak are my own again
When I leave this all fall behind
This mystic voyage
Transcending space and time
This journey ends within my mind
All thoughts turn inward
Enter this world sublime
Where I exist within my mind
And the laws of the earth mean nothing to those
Who leave this world far behind
And the words that I speak are my own again
All of the longing
Condensed in this place and time
I invoke you, O spirits, crawl inside
Then awaken my conscience
Lain dormant for all this time
And feed the despair that pervades my life, yeah
In the hold of a nightmare
I see truth in their words and lies
And beauty appears in sorrow's guise
So caught in the moment
We ignore the passing of time
And mistake the empty for the sublime, yeah
Oh, my savior
Give value to these misdeeds
In sin you bathe me
Holy
So I say that the father lies
And my dreams will betray me tonight
Obey the scourge of night
May darkness bring sight
I welcome your grace
Upon this night
All of the longing
And thoughts scribed in soothing fire
The ashes and smoke breed my desire
Abject and misshapen
To you I give all that I'm worth
My swarthy children of the earth, yeah
Oh, can these words be given shape
Oh, does the fool acknowledge fate
I've awaken the monster
The one that exists in my mind
In fear I behold the apparent divine
It grants me one vision
The mother in death giving birth
To the swarthy children of the earth, yeah
Oh, our savior
Pour deep within me
In blackness forsake me
Holy
So I say that the father lies
And my dreams will betray me tonight, yeah
Breathe slightly
Sleep soundly
All through this night
Breathe slightly
Sleep soundly
All through this night
I'm under it's spell
I am too small
To try to resist the Ancient One's call
Will you be with me when I fall
I'm under it's spell
I am too small
To try to resist the Ancient One's call
Will you be with me when I fall
I'm under it's spell
I am too small
To try to resist the Ancient One's call
First you were bringing flowers
You were opening doors and taking her coat
You were like a gentleman
But still a coward inside
Soon there were millions of tears
Heavy words and hands out of control
You made her doubt her own ways
To insult and possess her mind
Like butterflies she burnt her wings
When she tried to dance in your fire
Was it easy to find somebody like her
to become the victim of your fears?
Anger, confusion, denial!
Violence!
Anger, confusion, denial!
Violence!
Love has nothing to do with
Disrespect and slavery
There is nothing to lose
There is a free world outside
Like butterflies she burnt her wings
When she tried to dance in your fire
Was it easy to find somebody like her
to become the victim of your fears?
(solo)
She cursed the day when she met you
She blamed herself because she let herself be hurt
She dreamt of going far away
But she was too afraid to leave her home
Like butterflies she burnt her wings
When she tried to dance in your fire
Was it easy to find somebody like her
to become the victim of your fears?
She has nothing to lose now!
Don't be blind!
