Oct 17th Student Loan Rally - Audio and Photos

From the open publishing newswire: Here is a 15 minute audio piece and a few photos from the Oct. 17th Student Rally at 5th and Main. About 75 people gathered. One person had a megaphone and people took turns describing their own experience. People described their search for jobs, how much money they owe, how the level of debt is going up even as they make some payment and the general sentiment that they were unlikely to ever be able to pay off their student loans. The point was also made that unlike other loans, student loans are not included in a bankruptcy filing.

Stand up to Nazis in Eugene

Jimmy Marr and his wife are members of the Pacifica Forum. From the open publishing newswire: These unsavory characters have recently been spotted frequenting the Wandering Goat Coffee Company, a local counterculture hangout. Other white supremacists have been harassing people in the Whitaker neighborhood. There have also been multiple accounts of Neo-Nazis stopping outside of the Wandering Goat and giving the Nazi "Roman Salute" to customers.

If you see them, or any other boneheads, let them know that Fascists are not welcome in our community. Together we are strong.

If you have any information about Jimmy Marr or other Fascist activity in Eugene, please contact the Eugene chapter of the Anti-Racist Action Network:  emeraldcityara@gmail.com

Portland High School Redesign -- Questions to Consider

From the open publishing newswire: Portland has been rather quiet about the high school redesign issue. As of last evening, it was formally decided that Marshall High School (all three academies) in the struggling Lents neighborhood of Southeast Portland will be closed. Benson Polytechnic High School will become a smaller magnet school, although it will remain a four-year vocational high school.

Jefferson High School will become a focus school. The affected student communities and their families have been vocal. However, where was the rest of the Portland community? Were people silent because they did not have children in the schools? Did they not care because their children's schools were not targeted? It takes a village to raise a child. Where was the rest of the Portland village during the high school redesign process? Here are some questions to ponder as the high school redesign takes effect.... Your silence will not protect you (or yours).

Video: Portland Rally to Defend Public Education

From the open publishing newswire: Portland Oregon Student Rally held at Portland State University on October 7, 2010, as part of a national day of action to defend education.

The first speaker sets the theme for the event by calling attention to the reasons for this nationwide action: "education continues to be attacked by budget cuts, privatization, faculty and teacher lay offs, rising tuition, etc."
She then goes a little into the history of the student rebellion against this crisis, the successful March 4th 2010 Student Strike and the subsequent organizing.

The second speaker begins by "wanting to know where my money is?" She answers that much of our money is going to the bloated military budget and elaborates just what that amount of money could do for the people of this country.

The third speaker, a lawyer, talks at length about what people can do to save education.

Video is about 14 minutes in length.

Support HS Students in Their Struggle for Educational Equity!

From the open publishing newswire: Attend the School Board meeting on Monday, May 10 (this Monday), at the Portland Public Schools Administration Offices on North Dixon. There will be student speakers at this event. The School Board meeting is scheduled from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m
Help support the ones most affected by Portland Public Schools Redesign Plan -- the students, their families and their neighborhoods. Listen to their voices and support them in their right to be heard and listened to. It is their future at stake!

Marshall High School in outer-Southeast Portland and Benson Technical High School are the high schools which are going to be most impacted by the High School Redesign Plan. The proposal for Marshall High School includes making it a "focus" (which focus is as yet undisclosed) school with a student body of 400. Lents neighborhood teens not attending the Marshall High School "Focus" School would be attending Madison or Franklin High Schools, a substantial commute from their neighborhood. Marshall High School is a vital part of the struggling Lents neighborhood. The effective closure of Marshall High School would negatively impact the Lents community.

The proposal for Benson Technical High School is to transform it from a four-year technical high school and make it a two-year vocational school for juniors and seniors. These juniors and seniors would attend other schools but would enroll for tech classes at Benson. Both Marshall High School and Benson High School serve large populations of low income and minority youth, who will suffer from these changes.

Northwest Anarchist Conference: Anarchist Practice. April 24th - 25th

From the open publishing newswire: A Short Introduction:
The idea and focus behind this conference is to bring different types of anarchist practice to the for-front and begin moving away from specific theoretical engagements. Rather than taking theory and separating it from its everyday practice. This is an attempt at allocating theory the ideas brought up in discussion and talked about and beginning to practice them (IE. Praxis). There will be no specific theory leading the discussions or dialogue throughout the time except for the person. The set up is to have the ability to talk and discuss the ideas in an open manner. So after every discussion there will be a small open dialogue about the ideas.

April Bark About to the Proposed Clackamas River Palomar Pipeline

Prior Hike to Proposed Palomar Clackamas River Crossing From the open publishing newswire: One of the best ways to help stop LNG development in Oregon is to get on the ground and see what is threatened for yourself. The Palomar Pipeline threatens to clearcut some of our remaining ancient forests in Mt. Hood National Forest. By witnessing our forests as they stand today, you will be a stronger advocate for their future!
For the monthly Bark we will be hiking to the proposed pipeline route along the Wild and Scenic Clackamas River, staying on trail for most of the day. The trail is easy to moderate hiking. We will be hiking approximately three miles. It also provides fantastic views, so don't forget your camera!

OLIN STUDY GROUP APRIL 2010: on the global and local scope of police violence

From the open publishing newswire: Monday April 12 2010 6pm
In Other Words Women's Books and Resources
8 NE Killingsworth

Olin hosts a study group the second Monday of every month from 6-8pm at In Other Words*. Each month we choose a different theme and read an article for discussion.
While every month is different, past discussions have revolved heavily around how our background in international solidarity work can be applied and manifested locally. On what we can learn in our struggles here at home by looking across the borders and also how our work is unique.

This month we chose an article written with that in mind, with the intention of making those connections. While this article focuses on events in Minneapolis and Oaxaca specifically the local and international relevance at this moment should be clear:  http://elenemigocomun.net/3050/x/en
