Mahatma Gandhi
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (/ˈɡɑːndi, ˈɡæn-/;Hindustani: [ˈmoːɦənd̪aːs ˈkərəmtʃənd̪ ˈɡaːnd̪ʱi]; 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma (Sanskrit: "high-souled", "venerable")—applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa,—is now used worldwide. He is also called Bapu (Gujarati: endearment for "father", "papa") in India. In common parlance in India he is often called Gandhiji. He is unofficially called the Father of the Nation.
Born and raised in a Hindu merchant caste family in coastal Gujarat, western India, and trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule.

Mahatma Gandhi Heberpio Mattos Pires, commonly known as Mahatma (born 18 February 1992) is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays for Atlético Clube Goianiense as a defender.
Club career
Named after Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi joined Atlético Clube Goianiense. In 2011, he was a substitute on bench for a match of Serie A. He made seven Serie A appearances in 2012. In 2013, he played four matches for Serie B, but did not get a chance to play in 2014. He was part of the 2014 Campeonato Goiano winning team, where he made five appearances in the state league.

On 20 January 1948, Gopal Godse, a Hindu fanatic, attempted to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi. Ten days later, his brother Nathuram Godse managed to finish the job: he killed Gandhi. For Gopal Godse, India's Independence Day in August 1947 was a day of mourning. "Bharat Mata," "Mother India," which the young Brahmin zealously worshipped, had lost many of its provinces. Predominantly Muslim East Bengal had become East Pakistan, whilst western Punjab, the provinces of Sindh and Baluchistan and the land of the warlike Pashtuns made up West Pakistan a thousand miles away. This too was predominantly Muslim. Godse didn’t just see the former colonial power, Great Britain, as responsible for the "amputation," he also believed the Muslims were to blame. But, in Godse’s eyes, the main culprit was a Hindu who was celebrated as a hero because he had defied the English, a small man with round wire glasses and a white cotton robe: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as "Mahatma," the great soul. The Godse brothers did not care that Gandhi had always condemned conflict between the various religious communities and opposed the partition of India. They were members of the far-right Hindu Mahasabha, the "Great Assembly of Hindus," which had close links with the anti-British and fascist National Volunteer Corps. And now extremist Hindus are gaining ground in India again...

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was, born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat, India.
His father, Mr. Karamchand Gandhi was a higher official of Porbandar, and mother Putlibai was a religious woman. Gandhi was an average student, but a boy of strong principles. But who had known that he would lead one of the most influential protests in the history of the world?
He was married at the age of 13, to Kasturba, who was 14 years old. At the age of 19, he went to England, to study Law. After he returned home, he began to practice law. But soon he left for South Africa, to work in a Law Firm. He stayed there for 21 years. During his stay in South Africa, Gandhi fought for the rights of Indians.
During those times South Africa was dominated by Europeans, and they treated the people with dark skin color, very badly. Gandhi had the bitter experience of inequality in South Africa. On one such incident, he was forced to give up his first-class railway seat to a European. When Gandhi refused to do so, he was thrown out of the train.
Gandhi fought against inequality and was supported by many Indians who were facing the problem since many years, but never had the courage to fight back.
Do you know how did he fight for the rights of Indians?
He fought bravely, with a strange technique called – Non-Violence
Non-violence helped Gandhi won respect for the Indians, they were treated well after that and could even cast their vote in elections.
In 1914, Gandhi came back to India, at that time the country was still under the British rule. Gandhi joined the freedom movement and soon started leading the freedom movement with his weapons- non-violence and non-cooperation.
Gandhi gave a new direction to the freedom movement in India. And he soon became the leader of the Indian National Congress. Dandi March marked a turning point in the Indian freedom movement.
The salt tax was imposed on Indians by the Britishers did not allow Indians to collect, produce, or sell, salt. Indians were forced to buy salt from Britishers after paying a huge tax. So, poor people could not buy salt.
Gandhi organized a salt march which started on 12th March 1930, with 78 people from his ashram in Ahmedabad to the seaside village of Dandi. They covered a distance of 240 miles, and reached Dandi in 3 weeks, walking about 12 miles every day. On the way, they were joined by thousands of freedom fighters.
Gandhi and his fellowmen were arrested following the salt march. Later Gandhi began the Quit India movement in 1942, he was arrested again and released in 1944. Finally, India became Independent on 15th Aug 1947.
His autobiography, “The Story of My Experiments with Truth”, is surely a book to read.
Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse, who disagreed with the Principles of Gandhi.

Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948. Why was Gandhi killed and what events occurred before and after Gandhi's murder?
This documentary shows how India was dogged by nationalism and religious conflict on its path to independence - and how these factors mark the country to this day. On 20 January 1948, Gopal Godse, a Hindu fanatic, attempted to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi. Ten days later, his brother Nathuram Godse managed to finish the job: he killed Gandhi. For Gopal Godse, India's Independence Day in August 1947 was a day of mourning. "Bharat Mata," "Mother India," which the young Brahmin zealously worshipped, had lost many of its provinces. Predominantly Muslim East Bengal had become East Pakistan, whilst western Punjab, the provinces of Sindh and Baluchistan and the land of the warlike Pashtuns made up West Pakistan a thousand miles away. This too was predominantly Muslim. Godse didn’t just see the former colonial power, Great Britain, as responsible for the "amputation," he also believed the Muslims were to blame. But, in Godse’s eyes, the main culprit was a Hindu who was celebrated as a hero because he had defied the English, a small man with round wire glasses and a white cotton robe: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as "Mahatma," the great soul. The Godse brothers did not care that Gandhi had always condemned conflict between the various religious communities and opposed the partition of India. They were members of the far-right Hindu Mahasabha, the "Great Assembly of Hindus," which had close links with the anti-British and fascist National Volunteer Corps. And now extremist Hindus are gaining ground in India again...

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was, born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat, India.
His father, Mr. Karamchand Gandhi was a higher official of Porbandar, and mother Putlibai was a religious woman. Gandhi was an average student, but a boy of strong principles. But who had known that he would lead one of the most influential protests in the history of the world?
He was married at the age of 13, to Kasturba, who was 14 years old. At the age of 19, he went to England, to study Law. After he returned home, he began to practice law. But soon he left for South Africa, to work in a Law Firm. He stayed there for 21 years. During his stay in South Africa, Gandhi fought for the rights of Indians.
During those times South Africa was dominated by Europeans, and they treated the people with dark skin color, very badly. Gandhi had the bitter experience of inequality in South Africa. On one such incident, he was forced to give up his first-class railway seat to a European. When Gandhi refused to do so, he was thrown out of the train.
Gandhi fought against inequality and was supported by many Indians who were facing the problem since many years, but never had the courage to fight back.
Do you know how did he fight for the rights of Indians?
He fought bravely, with a strange technique called – Non-Violence
Non-violence helped Gandhi won respect for the Indians, they were treated well after that and could even cast their vote in elections.
In 1914, Gandhi came back to India, at that time the country was still under the British rule. Gandhi joined the freedom movement and soon started leading the freedom movement with his weapons- non-violence and non-cooperation.
Gandhi gave a new direction to the freedom movement in India. And he soon became the leader of the Indian National Congress. Dandi March marked a turning point in the Indian freedom movement.
The salt tax was imposed on Indians by the Britishers did not allow Indians to collect, produce, or sell, salt. Indians were forced to buy salt from Britishers after paying a huge tax. So, poor people could not buy salt.
Gandhi organized a salt march which started on 12th March 1930, with 78 people from his ashram in Ahmedabad to the seaside village of Dandi. They covered a distance of 240 miles, and reached Dandi in 3 weeks, walking about 12 miles every day. On the way, they were joined by thousands of freedom fighters.
Gandhi and his fellowmen were arrested following the salt march. Later Gandhi began the Quit India movement in 1942, he was arrested again and released in 1944. Finally, India became Independent on 15th Aug 1947.
His autobiography, “The Story of My Experiments with Truth”, is surely a book to read.
Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse, who disagreed with the Principles of Gandhi.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (/ˈɡɑːndi, ˈɡæn-/;Hindustani: [ˈmoːɦənd̪aːs ˈkərəmtʃənd̪ ˈɡaːnd̪ʱi]; 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma (Sanskrit: "high-souled", "venerable")—applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa,—is now used worldwide. He is also called Bapu (Gujarati: endearment for "father", "papa") in India. In common parlance in India he is often called Gandhiji. He is unofficially called the Father of the Nation.
Born and raised in a Hindu merchant caste family in coastal Gujarat, western India, and trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule.
