It is believed that hashish originated in West Asia, where the cannabis plant was widely available. Northern Pakistan has a long social tradition in the production of hashish, known locally as Charas, which is believed to be the same plant resin as was burned in the ceremonial "booz rooz" of ancient Persia. Cannabis sativa subsp. indica grows wild almost everywhere in the Indian sub-continent, and special strains have been particularly cultivated for production of 'ganja' and 'hashish' particularly in West Bengal, Rajasthan and the Himalayas. The earliest hashish was created by gently rubbing palms and fingers on cannabis buds for hours to accumulate resin, which would then be scraped off the hand. The principal utility of hashish, compared to other forms of cannabis, has been greater ease of storage, transport or concealment for purposes of export marketing. Consumption of hashish saw an increase in the 20th century, in Europe and America, associated with the hippie world travel subculture. Hashish use then declined significantly in the United States starting in the 1980s for several reasons, including US political pressures against Afghanistan and the ensuing Soviet invasion, the Reagan-escalated War on Drugs, an increase in price, and the success of marijuana cultivators in North America with new methods for increasing THC production, such as indoor growing. Charas is the name given to a hashish form of cannabis which is hand-made in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal and India. It is made from the resin of the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica). The plant grows wild throughout Northern India, Pakistan and the Himalayas (its putative origin) and is an important cash crop for the local people Gardaa Gardaa is a type of hashish made primarily in Afghanistan, but also in Pakistani tribal areas, using dried cannabis of high potency. It is a very pure form of Charas; free from any additive chemicals. It is a very pliable substance which can take any shape. Usually sold in the shape of balls, Gardaa starts dissolving into smaller particles even with the heat of the palm. Gardaa is an Urdu word which means "dust". It is named Gardaa due to its similarity in colour to mud or brown thick dust. Charas is mostly consumed after it is heated. After it is heated, the "brown powder" changes into a smooth "greenish mass". The term gardaa is also some times used to describe the greenish powder-form of charas. Gardaa has two types mainly, one is soft, solid, smooth structure known as pakka garda and the other one is kacha gardaa, kacha gardaa is a soft powder which is green (or lightly green brown sometimes). Although gardaa is available throughout Pakistan, it is made in the northern tribal areas of Pakistan and in Afghanistan. Militia fire their machine guns wildly at a busy market where drug dealers sell jeans with hashish hidden in the pockets -- and in the midst of such constant shoot-outs, the window replacement business thrives. It's not the only business that's booming. "Before we grew hashish there was poverty. Now the poor man has changed his condition, he became rich." There are many people here who do not want the war the end. After all, "war is purely business." "Hashish is a grass come from God," explains one farmer, sifting through a pile of hashish that bring home 20 million dollars or more. Whilst some here are addicted, the majority, "smuggle drugs to survive". Heroin is the biggest earner of all the drugs produced in Lebanon, yet this young man wouldn't touch it himself. "This is poison", he says, gesturing to some boiling opium, "who wants to eat poison? No way, never."
