Fact #1: Strep throat is a bacterial infection in the throat and the tonsils. The throat gets irritated and inflamed, causing a sudden painful sore throats. Strep throat is caused by streptococcus bacteria. There are many different types of strep bacteria. Some types can cause more serious symptoms Fact #2: Not every sore throat has to be strep throat. In Fact sore throats are more commonly caused by viruses and not strep bacteria. Sore throats caused by a virus can be just as painful as strep throat. But if you have cold symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and runny nose or stuffy nose you probably do not have strep throat. Fact #3: The most common symptoms of strep throat are: •A sudden, severe sore throat. •Pain when you swallow. •Fever over 101 °F (38.3 °C). •Swollen tonsils and lymph nodes •White or yellow spots on the back of a bright red throat. Fact #4: Symptoms of step throat usually begin within 2 to 5 days after you come in contact with someone who has a strep infection. Strep throat usually goes away in 3 to 7 days with or without antibiotic treatment. Fact #5: Call a doctor if the following symptoms develop 1 to 2 weeks or longer after a strep throat infection. These symptoms may indicate rheumatic fever. •Weakness •Shortness of breath •Joint pain •Raised red rash or lumps under the skin •Uncontrolled, jerking movements of the arms or legs Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 2 days of treatment with an antibiotic. Fact # 6: A number of medications are available to cure strep throat, relieve its symptoms and prevent its spread. Antibiotics If you or your child has strep throat, your doctor will likely prescribe an oral antibiotic such as: •Penicillin. This drug may be given by injection in some cases — such as if you have a young child who is having a hard time swallowing or is vomiting. •Amoxicillin. This drug is in the same family as penicillin, but is often a preferred option for children because it tastes better and is available as a chewable tablet. These antibiotics reduce the duration and severity of symptoms, as well as the risk of complications and the likelihood that infection will spread to classmates or family members. Fact #6: Be sure to finish the entire prescription, even when you start feeling better, unless your healthcare professional tells you to stop taking the medicine. When you stop taking antibiotics early, you risk getting an infection later that is resistant to antibiotic treatment.
