New data show that malaria mortality worldwide could be almost double that of previous estimates—at around 1.24 million deaths in 2010. The data, published in an Article, highlight how there could be many more deaths overall in young children, with implications for child survival programmes, and for older children and adults. An Editorial calls for urgent action to review these data and re-align priorities in malaria control. The issue is also discussed in a Podcast. |

Papers published on The Lancet UK Policy Matters microsite raise concerns about the quality of past evaluations commissioned directly or indirectly by the Department of Health. Read the papers and accompanying blog post to find out more.
UK Policy Matters is a Lancet-based project which explores how UK policy changes affect health. On our microsite you will be able to access evidence-based summaries of different policies and tell us your experiences of how changes in policy have affected health.
If you have evidence of how policy has affected health or health care, we would like to hear from you. We are interested in all forms of evidence, including brief summaries of evidence from academics; and information from the public, managers, and healthcare workers about changes in services and their impact (individual experiences are welcomed).
See the Submit your evidence section of the site to share your experiences and submit your evidence.

A 5-year-old boy affected with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, diagnosed aged 1 year, was referred to us after having an acute ischaemic cardiac event. He presented with an LDL-cholesterol concentration of 26 mmol/L, and tendon xanthomas at the wrists, knees, and achilles. He had been treated with colestyramine. Coronary angiography showed a complete obstruction of the left coronary artery and a partial obstruction of the right coronary artery, which required stent placement. View Clinical Picture
