AJ Foyt started on the pole, but as usual when he did that at Indianapolis, he failed to win, this time breaking down on lap 142. Rutherford would go on to win twice more at the Speedway, but it's no doubt that his first win was definitely his most unexpected. Enjoy!

1992 Indy 500 Time Trials - Tom Carnegie calls Roberto Guerrero's Track Record Pole Run
1992 Indy 500 Time Trials - Tom Carnegie calls Roberto Guerrero's Track Record Pole Run
Tom Carnegie calls Roberto Guerrero's 1992 Indianapolis 500 track record pole run. The audio is a bit rough in parts, but it is from the IMS Public address system, which was not of great quality in 1992. Saturday May 9, 1992 Indianapolis Motor Speedway Speedway, Indiana Roberto Guerrero took to the track at 534 pm EST during a hectic, rain-delayed, abbreviated, Indy 500 pole day session. He set new all-time one- and four lap track records on his way to the pole position. Lap 1 - 38.762 seconds, 232.186 mph (new 1-lap track record) Lap 2 - 38.707 seconds, 232.516 mph (new 1-lap track record) Lap 3 - 38.690 seconds, 232.618 mph (new 1-lap track record) Lap 4 - 38.692 seconds, 232.606 mph Total - 2;34.851, 232.482 mph (new 4-lap track record) The voices heard are the live call on the public address system at the Speedway. Tom Carnegie makes the call, along with John Totten. Guerrero's car owner Kenny Bernstein (King Racing) is seen in the pits. After Guerrero completed his run, his car ran out of fuel on the cool down lap, and came to a stop on the backstretch. The next car out to qualify was Danny Sullivan, and he blasted by the stalled car of Guerrero. Danny was forced to make his attempt the following day. On race day, sadly Guerrero spun out on the warm up lap, hit the inside wall, and finished last.

1973 Indianapolis 500, Part 2 (Pre-Race and Salt Walther Crash)
No copyright infringement is intended with this, or any other video I upload. The purpose of uploading this video is for the viewing pleasure for those that watch it. This is part 2 of the 1973 Indianapolis 500. This video focuses on the pre-race coverage from the sppedway's official film of the race, which was festive as always, even in this tragic year, as well as the huge crash involving Salt Walther, most notably, though a total of 12 cars were involved in the crash. Also included is the interview that Dave Diles of ABC Sports did with Jerry Grant, one of two such interviews he did with Grant following horrific accidents. If you watch very carefully, the car of Steve Krisiloff, which started on the inside of the third row in the seventh starting position had mechanical problems on the initial start, which was officially aborted. Krisiloff moved over to lets everyone go by him, but his car was a rolling road block, which caused a bottleneck, narowing the track, which resulted in Salt Walther veering into Jerry Grant at about the time they were about to pass Krisiloff, but at that time, if you watch carefully, the cars are just about FIVE abreast at that portion of the field. Credits for the beginning of this video belong to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for it is their official film of the race that particular footage comes from, SPEED [known as SpeedVision then], which broadcast that in the 1973 episode of "Indy 500: The Classics", with the host segment left in ...

Indy 500 - 1969 - Race report
Indy 500 - 1969 - Race report
On pole day, Saturday May 17, rain threatened to wash out the afternoon. At the time, the rules did not specifically provide for rain delay extensions during the pole round. Only cars who made an attempt before the rains came (and the track being closed) might be eligible for the pole unless officials made a ruling. Rookie Jigger Sirois drew the #1 qualifying spot in the order. At 4:12 pm, the track finally was opened for qualifying, and Sirois took to the track. He completed his first three laps at: Lap 1 - 161.783 mph Lap 2 - 162.279 mph Lap 3 - 160.542 mph However, on his fourth and final lap, his crew waved off the run, and it was aborted. Arnie Knepper was the second car in line, and pulled away for his warm up laps. Rain began to fall, and Knepper was unable to complete a single lap. The rain washed out the rest of the afternoon, and continued into Sunday, washing out the entire weekend. Had Sirois' crew not waved off his final lap, he would have been the lone qualifier of the weekend, and would have sat on the provisional pole position for an entire week. On the second weekend of time trials, Sirois waved off his second attempt, and also waved off his third and final attempt when his speed was not fast enough. Sirois's first attempt the weekend before would have been fast enough to qualify for the race. Sirois never managed to qualify at Indy in subsequent years, and became a source of popular folklore.
