Deir el-Medina (Arabic: دير المدينة) is an ancient Egyptian village which was home to the artisans who worked on the tombs in the Valley of the Kings during the 18th to 20th dynasties of the New Kingdom period (ca. 1550–1080 BC) The settlement's ancient name was "Set Maat" (translated as "The Place of Truth"), and the workmen who lived there were called “Servants in the Place of Truth”. During the Christian era, the temple of Hathor was converted into a church from which the Arabic name Deir el-Medina ("the monastery of the town") is derived.
At the time when the world's press was concentrating on Howard Carter's discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, a team led by Bernard Bruyère began to excavate the site. This work has resulted in one of the most thoroughly documented accounts of community life in the ancient world that spans almost four hundred years. There is no comparable site in which the organisation, social interactions, working and living conditions of a community can be studied in such detail.
Medina (/məˈdiːnə/; Arabic: المدينة المنورة, al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah, "the radiant city"; or المدينة, al-Madīnah, "the city"), also transliterated as Madīnah, is a city in the Hejaz, and the capital of the Al Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia. The city contains al-Masjid an-Nabawi ("the Prophet's Mosque"), which is the burial place of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and is the second-holiest city in Islam after Mecca.
Medina was Muhammad's destination after his Hijrah from Mecca, and became the capital of a rapidly increasing Muslim Empire, first under Muhammad's leadership, and then under the first four Rashidun caliphs, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali. It served as the power base of Islam in its first century where the early Muslim community developed. Medina is home to the three oldest mosques, namely the Quba Mosque, al-Masjid an-Nabawi, and Masjid al-Qiblatayn ("the mosque of the two qiblas"). Muslims believe that the chronologically final surahs of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad in Medina, and are called Medinan surahs in contrast to the earlier Meccan surahs.

The Valley of the Kings (Arabic: وادي الملوك Wādī al Mulūk), the Valley of the Gates of the Kings (Arabic: وادي ابواب الملوك Wādī Abwāb al Mulūk), is a valley in Egypt where, for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, tombs were constructed for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt). The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The wadi consists of two valleys, East Valley (where the majority of the royal tombs are situated) and West Valley.
With the 2005 discovery of a new chamber (KV63), and the 2008 discovery of two further tomb entrances, the valley is known to contain 63 tombs and chambers (ranging in size from KV54, a simple pit, to KV5, a complex tomb with over 120 chambers). It was the principal burial place of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, as well as a number of privileged nobles. The royal tombs are decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology and give clues to the beliefs and funerary rituals of the period. Almost all of the tombs seem to have been opened and robbed in antiquity, but they still give an idea of the opulence and power of the Pharaohs. This area has been a focus of archaeological and egyptological exploration since the end of the eighteenth century, and its tombs and burials continue to stimulate research and interest. In modern times the valley has become famous for the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun (with its rumours of the Curse of the Pharaohs), and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. In 1979, it became a World Heritage Site, along with the rest of the Theban Necropolis. Exploration, excavation and conservation continues in the valley, and a new tourist centre has recently been opened.
The New Kingdom of Egypt, also referred to as the Egyptian Empire, is the period in ancient Egyptian history between the 16th century BC and the 11th century BC, covering the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth Dynasties of Egypt. Radiocarbon dating places the exact beginning of the New Kingdom between 1570–1544 BC. The New Kingdom followed the Second Intermediate Period and was succeeded by the Third Intermediate Period. It was Egypt’s most prosperous time and marked the peak of its power.
The later part of this period, under the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties (1292–1069 BC) is also known as the Ramesside period, after the eleven pharaohs that took the name of Ramesses.
Possibly as a result of the foreign rule of the Hyksos during the Second Intermediate Period, the New Kingdom saw Egypt attempt to create a buffer between the Levant and Egypt, and attained its greatest territorial extent. Similarly, in response to very successful 17th century attacks by the powerful Kingdom of Kush, the New Kingdom felt compelled to expand far south into Nubia and hold wide territories in the Near East. Egyptian armies fought Hittite armies for control of modern-day Syria.
John Anthony West (born 1932 in New York) is an American author, lecturer, guide and a proponent of Sphinx water erosion hypothesis in geology.
Influenced by R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz, in 1993 his work with Robert M. Schoch, a geologist and associate professor of natural science at the College of General Studies at Boston University was presented by Charlton Heston in a NBC special called “The Mystery of the Sphinx” that won West a News & Documentary Emmy Award for Best Research and a nomination for Best Documentary. The documentary contends that the main type of weathering evident on the Great Sphinx and surrounding enclosure walls could only have been caused by prolonged and extensive rainfall during the time period from 10,000 to 5000 BCE and was carved out of limestone bedrock by an ancient advanced culture (such as the Heavy Neolithic Qaraoun culture). This challenged the conventional dating of the carving of the statue circa 2500 BCE. West suggested that the Sphinx may be over twice as old as originally determined, whereas Schoch made a more conservative determination of between 5000 and 7000 BCE.
Egyptian Journeys with Dan Cruickshank is a BBC Television documentary series in which Dan Cruickshank explores the mysteries of Ancient Egypt. Episode one: The Secrets of the Tomb Builders. Cruickshank finds out about the mysterious people who built the spectacular underground tombs of the Pharaohs. Cruickshank flies over the Valley of the Kings where the pharaohs hid their tombs over 3,500 years ago. Over 60 tombs are dug into the walls of the valley where the bodies and riches inside could be guarded from tomb robbers. Descending into the massive KV5, built by Rameses II for his sons, Cruickshank is able to admire the precise engineering skills of its builders. In the Tomb of Horemheb, sealed before it could be completed, he admires the unfinished work of the tomb artists. At Deir el-Me...

The Egypt Exploration Society would like to thank the Institute of Archaeology, UCL for hosting the lecture and Braun Arts for providing their filming services for the event. Lecture abstract: Work has been ongoing on at Deir el-Medina for nearly a century. Over the years, an exceptional amount of discoveries have been made, both archaeological as well as epigraphic, covering practically all aspects of daily life in New Kingdom Egypt. The site has delivered so many documents that many remain unpublished or under studied. For that reason, one might think this site has nothing more to offer or, at least, just a few residual shreds. The recent fieldwork, restarted under the impulse of a renewed team, has proven that this idea is far from true. It confirms that this site still has rich potent...

The boy king Tutankhamun has died and it's our job to quickly build his tomb to house his remains. This mission is actually very easy. All you have to do is build Tut's tomb in 7 years and stock it with burial provisions. The town you need to build does not need to be overly fancy, and making money is not the objective of the mission because there is no prosperity rating here. Itjtawy will continually bombard you with requests of Chickpeas and Lettuce so make sure you have a lot of farms in the map. The problem is that you have to import virtually all the burial provisions and they are extremely expensive. You will have to export whatever you can to keep yourself in the black. Learn more at http://expertbeacon.com/traveling-luxor-egypt-visit-deir-el-shelwit-temple/ In this video, Mogg Morgan suggests you should visit the Deir el-Shelwit temple if you're traveling to Luxor, Egypt. Deir el-Shelwit was built when Egypt was ruled by the Romans and is thus one of the last temples of the Egyptian religion. It was discovered in the 19th century but has only recently been fully renovated and opened to the public. It is in a remote region just south of Luxor. With Luxor itself being such a treasure house of high Egyptian culture, it is easy to ignore these later monuments, but they are well worth adding to your itinerary. Deir el-Shelwit is similar to several other local and related temples, such as that of Hathor at Deir el Medina. Deir el-Shelwit is dedicated to the...
Deir el-Medina is an ancient Egyptian village which was home to the artisans who built the temples and tombs ordered by the Pharaohs and other dignitaries in the Valley of the Kings during the New Kingdom period (18th to 20th dynasties). Deir-el Medina on Thebassa (nyk. Luxor), Niilin läntisellä rannalla sijaitseva paikka, jonka muinainen egyptinkielinen nimi oli Set-Maat, 'totuuden paikka'. Siellä sijaitsee muinaisegyptiläinen rauniokylä, joka tunnetaan nykyään Deir-el Medinan työläiskylänä. Se on merkittävä arkeologinen löytö, koska siellä on säilynyt tavallisten muinaisten egyptiläisten asuintaloja, mikä on hyvin harvinaista. Deir-el Medinan työläiskylää tutkimalla on voitu selvittää muinaisten egyptiläisten arkisesta elämästä paljon sellaista, mikä ei selviä temppeleitä ja kalliohauto...

AMULETS and SYMBOLS 4/7: The BA was the soul of the personality of a human. But it also has to do with power and gods as well as humans can have a Ba. Certain deities were even described as being the Ba of another god, the Ba of Re was the Bennu bird at Heliopolis, and the Apis bull was considered the Ba of Osiris. The KA It was thought that the creator god Khnum created a person´s Ka when he created the person on his potter´s wheel. The Ka then followed the person like a shadow or a double all through life, but when the person died, the Ka returned to its heavenly abode. It was also dependent on food offerings, either real ones or carved as depictions on tomb walls. Unlike the Ba, the Ka was not thought to eat these offerings, but to assimilate their energy in the same way that the cult ...

Horemheb was the last king of 18.dynasti, but before that, he did military service during the pharaoh Amenhotep III, Ankhenaton, Tutankhamon and Ay. Horemheb was obviously early emerged as a military intelligence, and appointed as an officer of Amenhotep III. Later, during Ankhenaton, he was General "Great Commander" for the army. During Tutankhamen's time, he was also royal adviser, and he, along with Ay, been partly responsible for the fact that governs Egypt for Tutankhamun. Architecturally, these graves reproductions of a royal "Millions of years of house" where they cultivated the late King's cult, and it is very likely that their function has remained the same. VALLEY of The NOBLES X : T.T.31, T.T.343, T.T.56, T.T.57: KHONSU'S Tomb (TT31) is located in the necropolis of Sheikh Abd el Qurna and dates from the 19th Dynasty, during the reign of Ramesses II (c. 1279-1213 B.C.) doubtless in its second part. It belonged to an official with the name of Khonsu. This is the same name as the god known as the "son" of the Theban triad (Amon - Mut - Khonsu). Additionally, in the inscriptions of the tomb, the name of Khonsu is repeatedly followed by his nickname, Ta or To. His family was traditionally connected to the cult of Montu, the falcon headed war god of the Theban region. Khonsu was descended from a prestigious lineage, since his grand-father, Usermontu, seems to have been a vizier at the time of the Amarnian period. Many members of the deceased's fa...

Documentaries - The mysterious murder of Pharaoh Ramesses III - Documentary 2017 Over the some three thousand years of Egyptian history during the Pharaonic Period only a handful of the several hundred who ruled Egypt (or part of Egypt) can be considered truly great kings. Of these, Ramesses III, who was the second ruler of Egypt's 20th Dynasty, was the last of great pharaohs on the throne. His reign was a time of considerable turmoil throughout the Mediterranean that saw the Trojan War, the fall of Mycenae and a great surge of displaced people from all over the region that was to reek havoc; even toppling some empires. Another of Ramesses III's queens was Tiy, but in a several noteworthy papyrus from his reign, particularly one known today as the Harem Conspiracy Papyrus, we learn of an ...

Ramses in the Valley is the fourth and final trip to the Valley of the Kings and we've simply got to build a fair sized settlement and build the tomb. Sounds easy? It's not. This mission contains every single Cleopatra special event that will have you constantly in problems with housing. This means that you are most likely going to have an enormous worker shortage as the population seems to age faster in this mission and it's not made easier when you need to build a manor area. The water courses also make it hard to build suitable housing blocks, so plan carefully. You'll want to get started quickly, as other cities will call on you for goods that you may need to import raw materials for. An export industry consisting of Pottery, Bricks and Beer is probably your best option to begin with...
