Gudfred

King Godfred (ruled from 804 or earlier until 810) was a Danish king during the Viking era. Gudfred was the younger son of King Sigfred. Alternate spelling include Gudfred, Göttrick (German), Gøtrik (Danish), Gudrød (Danish), and Godofredus (Latin).

Biography

King Godfred appeared in present day Holstein with a navy in 804 AD where diplomacy took place with the Franks. It is believed that Godfred's brother Halfdan became earl of some wealthy market towns south of the river Ejder, occupying what became known as North Frisia. Refusing to pay tax to Godfred, Halfdan swore his allegiance to Charlemagne in 807 to get his protection. In 798, the Obodrites had defeated the Saxons in the battle on Swentana river. The Saxons were dispersed by the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne. The part of their former land in Holstein north of Elbe was awarded to the Obotrites in 804, as a reward for their victory. In 804, a Frankish army penetrated as far as the Ejder, Denmark's traditional boundary at the time.

Nana Akwasi Asare

Nana Akwasi Asare (born 11 July 1986) is a Ghanaian international footballer who plays professionally for Belgian club Gent, as an attacking midfielder.

Club career

Born in Kumasi, Asare has played for Feyenoord Ghana, Feyenoord, Royal Antwerp, Mechelen, Utrecht and Gent.

Asare moved from Mechelen to Utrecht in May 2009. He signed a four-year contract with Gent in June 2013.

International career

Asare earned 5 caps for Ghana between 2007 and 2012. He was a squad member at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ragnar Lodbrok

Ragnar Lodbrok or Lothbrok (Old Norse: Ragnarr Loðbrók, "Ragnar Hairy Breeches") was a legendary Norse ruler, king, and hero from the Viking Age described in Old Norse poetry and several sagas. In this tradition, Ragnar was the scourge of France and England and the father of many renowned sons, including Ivar the Boneless, Björn Ironside, Halfdan Ragnarsson, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, and Ubba. While these men are historical figures, it is uncertain whether Ragnar himself existed or really fathered them. Many of the tales about him appear to conflate the deeds of several historical Viking heroes and rulers.

According to legend, Ragnar was thrice married: to the shieldmaiden Lagertha, to the noblewoman Þóra Borgarhjǫrtr, and to Aslaug. Said to have been a relative of the Danish king Gudfred and son of the Swedish king Sigurd Hring, he became king himself and distinguished himself by many raids and conquests until he was eventually seized by his foe, King Ælla of Northumbria, and killed by being thrown into a pit of snakes. His sons bloodily avenged him by invading England with the Great Heathen Army.

Viking sword

The so-called Viking sword is the type of sword prevalent in Western and Northern Europe during the Viking Age.

The Viking or Carolingian-era sword was a development of the Merovingian sword (more specifically, the Frankish production of swords in the 6th to 7th century, itself derived from the Roman spatha) and the Viking sword in turn gave rise to the high medieval knightly sword in the 11th to 12th centuries.

Terminology

Although called "Viking sword", this style of sword was not in any way limited to Vikings; indeed, the center of Western European sword production at the time was in the Frankish Empire, and many of the sword blades found in Scandinavia are of Frankish manufacture, imported by trade, ransom payment or looting.

Swords of the early Viking Age (8th to 9th centuries) can also be termed "Carolingian swords", while swords of the later Viking Age (10th to 11th centuries) blend into the category of Norman swords or the early development of the knightly sword.
