A journalist collects and distributes news and other information. A journalist's work is referred to as journalism.

A reporter is a type of journalist who researches, writes, and reports on information to be presented in mass media, including print media (newspapers and magazines), electronic media (television, radio, documentary film), and digital media (such as online journalism). Reporters cultivate sources, conduct interviews, engage in research, and make reports. The information-gathering part of a journalist's job is sometimes called "reporting," in contrast to the production part of the job such as writing articles. Reporters may split their time between working in a newsroom and going out to witness events or interview people. Reporters may be assigned a specific beat or area of coverage.

Depending on the context, the term journalist may include various types of editors, editorial writers, columnists, and visual journalists, such as photojournalists (journalists who use the medium of photography).

Journalism has developed a variety of ethics and standards. While objectivity and a lack of bias are often considered important, some types of journalism, such as advocacy journalism, intentionally adopt a non-objective viewpoint.

Salaries and job outlook[link]

The Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia has conducted its Annual Survey of Journalism and Mass Communication Graduates since 1997. According to its 2009 survey, the median salary earned by holders of either bachelor's or master's degrees in journalism and mass communication from colleges and universities in the United States (including Puerto Rico) entering the full-time job market in 2009 with $30,000. This was the same amount as in 2006, 2007, and 2008.^[1]

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook of the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, "employment of news analysts, reporters, and correspondents is expected to decline 6 percent between 2008 and 2018."^[2] The Occupational Outlook Handbook report that the median annual wage for news analysts, reporters, and correspondents in the United States was $34,850 in May 2008, with the middle 50 percent earning between $25,760 and $52,160, and the bottom and top 10 percent earning less than $20,180 and more than $77,480, respectively. Median annual wages for reporters and correspondents were $33,430 in "newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishing" and $37,710 in "radio and television broadcasting."^[2]

Journalistic freedom[link]

Journalists may expose themselves to danger, particularly when reporting in areas of armed conflict or in states that do not respect the freedom of the press. Organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders publish reports on press freedom and advocate for journalistic freedom. As of November 2011, the Committee to Protect Journalists reports that, 887 journalists have been killed worldwide since 1992 by murder (71 percent), crossfire or combat (17 percent), or on dangerous assignment (12 percent). The "ten deadliest countries" for journalists since 1992 have been Iraq (151 deaths), Philippines (72), United States (61), Algeria (60), Russia (52), Colombia (43), Pakistan (41), Somalia (35), India (27), and Mexico (27).^[3]

The Committee to Protect Journalists also reports that as of December 1, 2010, 145 journalists are jailed worldwide for journalistic activities. The countries with the ten countries largest number of currently-imprisoned journalists are China (34 imprisoned), Iran (34), Eritrea (17), Burma (13), Uzbekistan (six), Vietnam (five), Cuba (four), Ethiopia (four), Turkey (four), and Sudan (three).^[4]

Adam Curtis (born 1955) is a British BAFTA winning documentarian and a writer, television producer, director and narrator. He works for BBC Current Affairs.

Early life and education[link]

Curtis was born in 1955. He attended the Sevenoaks School.^[1]

Curtis completed a Bachelor of Arts in Human Sciences at Mansfield College, University of Oxford, where he studied genetics, evolutionary biology, psychology, politics, anthropology and statistics.^[2] He started a Doctor of Philosophy and was a Tutor in Politics at the University of Oxford but became disillusioned with academia.^[3]

Career[link]

He left academia to make a career in television, obtaining a post on That's Life!, a programme that often placed serious and humorous content in close juxtaposition.

Curtis makes extensive use of archive footage in his documentaries. He has acknowledged the influence of recordings made by Erik Durschmied and to "constantly using his stuff in my films".^[4] An Observer profile said of Curtis' style:

Curtis has a remarkable feel for the serendipity of such moments, and an obsessive skill in locating them. "That kind of footage shows just how dull I can be," he admits, a little glumly. "The BBC has an archive of all these tapes where they have just dumped all the news items they have ever shown. One tape for every three months. So what you get is this odd collage, an accidental treasure trove. You sit in a darkened room, watch all these little news moments, and look for connections."^[5]

The Observer adds "if there has been a theme in Curtis's work since, it has been to look at how different elites have tried to impose an ideology on their times, and the tragicomic consequences of those attempts."^[5]

Curtis received the Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 2005.^[6] In 2006 he was given the Alan Clarke Award for Outstanding Contribution to Television at the British Academy Television Awards. In 2009 Sheffield Doc/Fest awarded Curtis the inaugural Sheffield Inspiration Award for his inspiration to documentary makers and audiences.

Xin Feng (Chinese:忻峰) (born 27 May 1978 in Shanghai) is a Chinese football player who currently plays as a defender for Wuhan Zall in the China League One.

Club career[link]

Xin Feng started his professional football career for second tier side Shanghai Pudong before he switched to top tier side Shanghai Shenhua and broke into the their team during the 1998 league season when he made four league appearances in his debut season.^[1] Xin would also be included in the squad that won the 1998 Chinese FA Cup and by the following season he would start to establish himself as a regular within the team by making thirteen league appearances. After several seasons he would move to Shenzhen Jianlibao where he rose to prominence as a defender and would win the 2004 China Super League title with an unfancied Shenzhen team. During the ACL 2005 game against Suwon Samsung Bluewings he would achieve his personal highlight when he scored with a fierce close shot from a cross to seal Shenzhen's place in the quarter-finals. After five seasons with Shenzhen he would transfer back to his first team Shanghai Pudong, who had moved to Xi'an, Shaanxi and renamed themselves Shaanxi Chanba). For the next several seasons he would go on to be a vital member of the team, however nearing the end of his career the club would allow Xin to leave for free to Shanghai Shenhua.

Xin Feng would have to wait until February 7, 2007 before he made his international debut against Kazakhstan in a 2-1 victory in preparation for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup.^[2] Unable to make the squad he was given another chance to prove himself by the new Chinese Head coach Vladimir Petrović in a friendly against Mexico in a 1-0 defeat on April 16, 2008.^[3] Unable to recapture his club form for his country, Xin would only play once more for the senior team.

Roger Albert Clark, MBE, (5 August 1939 – 12 January 1998) was a British rally driver during the 1960s and '70s, and the first competitor from his country to win a World Rally Championship (WRC) event when he triumphed at the 1976 RAC Rally.

Biography[link]

He made his debut at club level in 1956, and went on to win the first of four British Rally Championship titles in a Ford Cortina GT in 1965, and in a Ford Escort RS (1972, '73 & '75), all with co-driver Jim Porter.

His most notable successes came in the RAC Rally, his country's biggest rally race. He won twice, in 1972 with Tony Mason and then again in 1976 with Stuart Pegg when it was part of the WRC, a feat that would not be emulated for over fifteen years. He also won the Acropolis Rally in 1968, the Circuit of Ireland in 1970, and the Scottish Rally on six occasions, among a total of 40 national and international victories.

In 1975 he was one of two recipients of the Segrave Trophy, bestowed upon "the Briton who accomplishes the most outstanding demonstration of the possibilities of transport by land, sea, air, or water." He was awarded the MBE in 1979.

Both of his sons followed their father into motorsport. Olly Clark has been a competitor in the Time Attack UK series (winning the championship in 2008), Network Q Rally of Great Britain and the FIA Cup for Drivers of Production Cars, while Matt Clark is now chief engine builder at the family-owned tuning company. His brother Stan Clark was also a racing driver.

In 2004, a historic rally event was established to recreate the route of the "classic" RAC Rally, since the current race is now restricted to south Wales. The event was named the Roger Albert Clark Rally (also RAC Rally) in his honour. Competitors are limited to vehicles released prior to 1972, and traces a route through stages in Scotland and northern England which are no longer part of the modern itinerary.

Justin Cole Moore (born March 30, 1984) is an American country music singer and songwriter signed to Big Machine Records imprint Valory Music Group. He has released two albums for Big Machine Records: Justin Moore in 2009 and Outlaws Like Me in 2011. He has charted six times on the Hot Country Songs charts, including the number one hits "Small Town USA" and "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away" and the top 10 hit "Backwoods".

Music career[link]

Moore began performing during his junior year of high school.^[3] After graduating, he joined his uncle's Southern rock band and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 2002.^[3]

Through his music attorney Bernie Cahill,^[4] he met a young producer in Nashville, Jeremy Stover, who introduced him to Scott Borchetta, a respected industry executive who was planning to launch The Valory Music Co. Borchetta promised to give him a record deal if he would be patient.^[3]

2008-2010[link]

In mid-2008, Moore signed to the Valory Music Group, an imprint of the independent record label Big Machine Records. The label then released the digital single "I Could Kick Your Ass". His first radio single, "Back That Thing Up", was co-written by his producer Jeremy Stover and Universal South Records artist Randy Houser. It reached number 38 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. He continued working on his debut album, which was part of a special promotion called "So You Want to Be a Record Label Executive". This promotion placed his music on social networking sites such as MySpace and iLike, where fans were allowed to create playlists comprising ten of his songs; the top ten songs picked were then included on the final album.^[5] His next single, "Small Town USA", entered the charts in February 2009,^[6] followed by a digital EP entitled The "You Asked for It" EP.

On August 11, the label released his self-titled debut album, on which he co-wrote nine of ten tracks.^[7] Justin Moore debuted at #3 on the Top Country Albums chart.^[8] He promoted the single and album on a "Small Town USA" tour which began in his hometown of Poyen and included several stops in small towns, as well as acoustic shows at Walmart stores.^[7] On the Billboard charts dated for October 3, 2009, "Small Town USA" became his first Number One hit. "Backwoods" was released as the album's third single in October 2009; the song was his second Top 10 hit with a peak of #6 in April 2010. The album's fourth single, "How I Got to Be This Way", debuted at #54 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the week of June 12, 2010; it became his third Top 20 country hit.

2011-Present[link]

In February 2011, he released the song "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away", which was originally recorded by Rhett Akins on his 2007 album People Like Me but did not chart. Justin Moore's rendition debuted at 46 on the Hot Country songs chart. In June 2011, the song became his third top ten hit on that chart, and a three weeks later, reached Number One. "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away" serves as the lead-off single to his 2011 album Outlaws Like Me, released June 21, 2011.

Musical styles[link]

Steve Leggett of Allmusic describes him as having "a ready-made image. He was that good kid from a small town with a rowdy heart of gold who just happened to be able to sing about it."^[6] He has said that he learned to write songs because, when he had first moved to Nashville, no songwriters wanted to offer him material.^[7] His album has received mixed reviews from music critics: Jeffrey B. Remz of Country Standard Time referred to him as a "poseur" for name-dropping,^[9] and Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic referred to it as "anonymous country rock."^[6] The 9513's Karlie Justus said that his influences were comparatively more authentic than most other acts on country radio,^[10] and Matt Bjorke of Roughstock said that his music has "a heavy dose of southern, country charm and twang."^[11]
