Politico's Evan Thomas Chides Press Over Claims of Romney Gaffes
On Friday's Inside Washington on PBS, regular panel member Evan Thomas dismissed media claims that Mitt Romney's recent trip abroad suffered from gaffes as the Politico correspondent asserted that the GOP presidential candidate spoke the truth about the Olympics in London and the social problems of the Palestinians. He concluded that "This is a convective thing that the press gets all excited about, but I don't think voters give a damn. Thomas's rebuke of the media came after conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer argued that Romney "did extremely well in Israel," in spite of media reports otherwise, and recounted to viewers that it was the primarily the Palestinian Authority's Saeb Erekat who complained about the GOP candidate's visit, noting the Palestinian official's history of making false accusations against Israelis, such as the Jenin massacre. Apple Maps Out a Google-Free Future
BY EVAN THOMAS ANCHOR NATHAN BYRNE There could be even less Google in your next iPhone. 9to5Mac reports Apple will drop Google Maps in favor of an in-house solution with iOS 6. The blog cites trusted sources, who say Apple's maps will be faster and more reliable than Google's. The application will be built on various mapping companies Apple acquired over the last few years, and the overhaul will come complete with a new icon. All Things Digital independently confirmed the rumors. One source said the new maps will "blow your head off." "I'm not quite sure what that means, and the source in question declined to elaborate, but it's likely a reference to the photorealistic 3-D mapping tech Apple acquired when it purchased C3 Technologies." All Things Digital says C3's mapping tech is based on software originally designed for missile targeting. An airborne array of cameras picks up images from various angles, which are crunched into the 3D images seen in this video from Cult of Mac. The visual polish is a nice touch, but TechCrunch says Apple wouldn't have been able to cut ties with Google if it hadn't had a database of its own. "While C3′s tech seems to have been used in building features, the purchase of white-label mapping service Placebase presumably allowed Apple to build up their store of map data to the point where they apparently feel comfortable giving Google the boot." And GigaOM suggests Apple is indeed comfortable in distancing itself from a competitor. "This is ...

Newsweek Editor Calls Obama "sort of God" - Literally
June 6, 2009: "Well, we were the good guys in 1984, it felt that way. It hasn't felt that way in recent years. So Obama's had, really, a different task We're seen too often as the bad guys. And he he has a very different job from Reagan was all about America, and he talked about it. Obama is 'we are above that now.' We're not just parochial, we're not just chauvinistic, we're not just provincial. We stand for something - I mean, in a way Obama's standing above the country, above above the world, he's sort of God." "Yeah," Chris "shiver up my leg" Matthews whines back.

Yahoo Sues Facebook for Patent Infringement
Transcript by www.newsy.com BY EVAN THOMAS ANCHOR NATHAN BYRNE This time around, it's not a mobile technology fight — Yahoo has gone through with its threat and sued Facebook in US district court. All Things Digital reports Yahoo is suing over 10 specific patents covering advertising, privacy, social networking and the like. It claims Facebook's entire social networking model is built on this intellectual property, or IP. On top of damages, it wants an injunction that will keep Facebook from using the patents in the future. And the suit comes right as Facebook is preparing for its IPO. All Things Digital also says this is either going to go well for Yahoo, or change its image in Silicon Valley. "Yahoo is shaking Facebook down for much more here and with much higher stakes for both companies. If successful, Yahoo could seriously damage Facebook's initial public offering; if not, Yahoo will cement its growing reputation as a company with nothing to lose, whose value is built not on its current business, but on non-operating assets." PaidContent says if the latter's the case, Yahoo wouldn't be alone. This isn't the first time a company has looked to score points — and cash — with its IP. "...the aggressive IP strategy may reflect weakness on Yahoo's part. In recent years, companies have turned to their patent portfolios as a white knight of sorts to rescue them when they are getting beat up in the market place." But CNET points out — Yahoo's a pillar of old Silicon Valley ...

Analysts- Google's Assistant Could Take On Siri
Transcript by www.newsy.com BY EVAN THOMAS If you wish you could talk to your Android phone without sounding like a machine, you're in luck. TechCrunch reports Google is planning some major upgrades to its voice controls for Android. It's speculated this upgrade is the project Google was calling "Majel" for a while. According to the report, Google's putting a lot of development muscle behind it. Assistant, as it's now called, could be shaping up to take on Siri... and win. "Google has had the in-house voice technology for ages... But 'Assistant' is set to go beyond Siri in many ways, most importantly in that the search company will retain complete control of all the layers involved." Siri and Android's Voice Actions can both handle constructed prompts, like "navigate to a location," or "call John at home." But Siri understands context, and natural-language questions. The Verge reports Google's aiming to do that, and more. What Google knows about you, Assistant will know, too. "Google would control all of the elements that make the service run knowledge would come from [the] company's search engine, and personalized results and analysis would come from data mined from services like Google+." PCWorld says Apple won't be able to match that level of software integration. "The beauty of using an Android phone, however, is that Google products simply work better on its own OS compared with on an iPhone. One can only imagine that as Google consolidates individual user data from ...
