Welcome to eco-shout, a catalyst to action for environmental and social justice.

With the accelerating pace of harm to our environment and subsequent growing number of environmental groups and campaigns, we've got rid of the green directory in order to focus exclusively on direct and immediate action for social change.

If you know of a group that's not included in our active groups directory, please tell us about it.

On Sunday 8 January three forest rescue activists boarded the Japanese whaling fleet security vessel Shonan Maru No 2 off Bunbury, Western Australia as an act of solidarity with Sea Shepherd in their campaign to stop Japanese commercial whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. While in the Antarctic Sea Shepherd activists from the Bob Barker continue to pursue and harass the main whaling fleet. Geoffrey Owen Tuxworth (47) of Perth, Simon Peterffy (44) of Bunbury and Glen Pendlebury (27) of Fremantle, all from Forest Rescue came by boat from shore to intercept the Japanese vessel the Shonan Maru No2 which was tailing the Sea Shepherd ship the Steve Irwin 16.2 miles off the coast and 22 miles Northwest of Bunbury, Western Australia. The Shonan Maru's position when boarded was 32 degrees, zero minutes south and 115 degrees, 21 minutes east. They were met by two small boats from the Steve Irwin. The boats approached the Shonan Maru under the cover of darkness and the three negotiated their way past the razor wire and spikes and over the rails to sucessffuly board the Japanese whaling vessel. A Statement by the Forest Rescue activists is available released on the Sea Shepherd website Sea Shepherd
One of Tasmania's most staunch and independent environment organisations, the Huon Valley Environment Centre, will celebrate its ten year anniversary this January with a music festival, art exhibitions and public gatherings. Huon Valley Environment Centre will be holding a 3 day music and arts festival in Lonnavale and an art exhibition at the Church Studio, Franklin. The music and arts festival will be held from January 19th – 22nd 2012 in Southern Tasmania. The art exhibition, Artists behind the Action, will be held from Friday 27th January to Sunday 5th February. 'Huon Valley Environment Centre activists have practiced a strong community ethic, organised hundreds of non violent protests, fought litigation, experienced the violence of their opponents and, yet, continue to stand up for the protection of the wild forests of southern Tasmania. Our efforts have brought unprecedented international attention to the threatened forests of the Weld Valley,’ HVEC spokesperson Jenny Weber said. HVEC
The Australian State of the Environment 2011 report has been released. Written by an independent committee of experts, the report presents a comprehensive review of the state and trends of the environment; the pressures on it and the drivers of those pressures; management initiatives in place to address environmental concerns and the impacts of those initiatives; its resilience and the unmitigated risks that threaten it; and provide an overall outlook for the Australian environment. The report concludes that global warming, population growth and economic development have become the main drivers of environmental impacts across the country. In a mixed scorecard, the report, produced every five years, says available evidence suggests the population, range, and genetic diversity of a wide range of Australia's wildlife species is in decline. The report also identifies unexpected declines in bird and mammal numbers in northern Australia - where land clearing and development pressures are less than the south - suggesting the trends might be worse than previously expected.
