Invasion/Sovereignty Day 2012
With Invasion/Sovereignty Day approaching and talk of a referendum for the Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal people, it's worth noting that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra. The Embassy, on the lawns of Old Parliament House, was set up, fought for and has been maintained by generations of Aboriginal activists to organise for Aboriginal sovereignty and justice. On 26th January, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy is inviting Aboriginal people and allies to meet, have discussions, and to get involved in the struggle for Aboriginal sovereignty.
If you can’t make it to Canberra, come along to the Invasion Day gig at Jura, featuring revo folk punk from Melbourne's A Commoners Revolt, alongside local favourites the BLAST, and Death Ghat from Aotearoa.
Other upcoming events at Jura include a talk on workers’ struggles in China on 10th February, and stay tuned for more details about an anarchist discussion series, our forthcoming inter-state publication, and as always, check out the new books in the shop and get involved at Jura!
This newsletter also contains news of community rallies and events, from the rally on 14th February to mark 8 years since the death of TJ Hickey, to Camp Anarchy in Melbourne on 10th-12th March.
We hope that your 2012 has gotten off to a good start, happy Chinese New Year, and happy 100th day of Occupy Sydney!

Contagious Strikes - Workers' Struggles in China
Friday 10th February, 7.00-9.00pm, Jura Books
In mid-2010, a strike wave rolled through China's factories, the most widespread and militant struggle of China's internal migrant workers so far. The struggle shook the Chinese regime and provoked a world-wide debate: Is this the beginning of the end of the low-wage-model that stands behind China's rise to the "factory of the world" and provides the rest of the world with cheap consumer products? The strikes continued in 2011, and together with riots and peasant uprisings they are indicators for the increasing pressure for social change in China.
This talk/discussion (including a ten-minute film) will focus on the strikes, the formation of a new working class movement in China, and the implications for social struggles around the world.
Jura is pleased to host this presentation by Ralf Ruckus, labour researcher/activist with a focus on the conditions and struggles of migrant workers in China (www.gongchao.org)

TJ Hickey rally: 8 years since his death - still no justice!
Tuesday 14th February, 10.30am, cnr George and Phillips St Waterloo
TJ Hickey died in February 2004 when his bike was rammed by a Redfern police vehicle driven by then-Constable Hollingsworth. There has been a Coronial inquiry cover-up, police and government cover-ups, and continuous protests, but 8 years later still no justice for the young Aboriginal man and his family.
The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991 made 339 Recommendations to stop Deaths in Custody. Not one of them has been implemented. Hundreds of Aboriginal people died before the report and hundreds of Aboriginal people have died since.
Join the Indigenous Social Justice Association in demanding an end to Aboriginal deaths in custody. Meet to demand a memorial place in the Block to remember TJ and all other Aborigines who die in custody.

Don’t Shoot the Messenger: WikiLeaks, Assange and Democracy
Friday 17th February, 6.30-8.15 pm, University of Technology Sydney (Room 02.04.13). Entry by gold coin donation
WikiLeaks, a free press publishing and media organisation, has revealed human rights abuses, war crimes and corruption in governments across the world. Yet the US Administration wants to close WikiLeaks down and prosecute its founder Julian Assange. International financial services organisations have blocked payments to WikiLeaks, denying them vital income. The Australian government has failed to take a stand against the political persecution of Assange. PM Gillard's assertion that WikiLeaks activities were illegal was proved to be false by an Australian Federal Police investigation. What does all this say about our democracy?
Come to a public forum presented by the Support Assange & WikiLeaks Coalition, with:
: Scott Ludlam, Greens Senator
: Christine Assange, mother of Julian Assange
: Humphrey McQueen, Historian, ANU
: Chaired by Mary Kostakidis

Camp Anarchy
10th to 12th March, Melbourne
Camp Anarchy is organised by the same people who brought you the Anarchist Melbourne Bookfair in August 2011. Its inspiration is Pinksterlanddagen: an anarchist camp held in the northern Netherlands for nearly 90 years (http://www.pinksterlanddagen.nl/). At the Dutch camp there are stalls, workshops, anarchist theatre and music and we hope to replicate this at Camp Eureka over the Labour Day weekend (March 10-12) in 2012.
Our aim is to bring anarchists, their families, friends and those new to the wide anarchist community together in a welcoming bush setting; to relax and share ideas, news, resources, skills, food and laughter.
If you want to book a stall, suggest a workshop, contribute to the camp reader, help out including with promotion, have a large marquee we can use for the weekend or can make a donation to the camp, please get in touch!

Occupy the Summer
2011 has been a big year for Jura and political organising, and there’s plenty more to look forward to over the summer. Occupy Sydney continues into its third month, there will be plenty of gigs in the Jura library (powered by our solar system!) and a new Australian anarchist journal will be launched in early 2012.
But Christmas can be a trying time of year for many people. Despite the abundance of food, drink and company, we struggle with the massive overconsumption that besieges our society. This festive season, consider opting out of the corporate rat-race – make or grow your own gifts, give favours and skill shares to loved ones, or pick up some great radical material from Jura.
We will be open until the 24th of December and take a little break, reopening on January 4th.
Have a great holiday season. We'll see you in the streets!

One of the most eventful years of class struggle is nearly at an end …

Come celebrate the recent popular resistance and plot revolution with
your comrades at the End of Year party.

Occupy Sydney Continues
The Occupation of Martin Place continues after eight weeks, despite continued harassment from police and authorities. Many occupiers have faced persecution and fines for a wide range of absurd charges including stealing milk crates. Despite this, many people from all over Sydney and New South Wales have continued to converge on Martin Place coming together over ideas of anti-capitalism and economic equality. To get involved or show your support, visit the Martin Place occupation and check out the various working groups or events that are happening around the occupation.

Keen for Revolution?
Here at Jura Books the revolution has already started! If you think the revolutionary change is not going fast enough, you could always help by joining one of our many activities or starting a new one. Come and get involved! Jura is an anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist bookshop and organising centre. We stock thousands of political books, and are actively involved in movements for social change. There are lots of things we are doing and need help with: agitating for worker's control, publishing zines and pamphlets, building the website and computer infrastructure, organising the library, putting on talks and films, and doing shifts in the bookshop.
Jura also welcomes groups and individuals to use our space and resources to organise their own activities. If you have a left libertarian philosophy and need facilities, you are most welcome!
