Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)

Who are non-governmental organizations (NGOs)?

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are generally considered to be not-for-profit groups or associations, whether local or international, acting outside political institutions. CBD Newsletter for Civil Society

Reflecting the important role of civil society in the development and implementation of the CBD, the Secretariat has launched a newsletter to act as a forum for sharing experience and information on the work of civil society organizations towards the objectives of the Convention.

Prepared with the CBD Alliance, and including articles from a number of its members, the first issue of the newsletter was released at the Ninth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP-9) held in Bonn from 19-30 May 2008.

Printing and distribution of the newsletter at COP9 were made possible through the assistance of the German NGO Focal Point for COP9 supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
