apt-get install Thunderbird 2 in the Feisty Pawn of the Fawn.

There has been news about the quest for getting Thunderbird 2 in Ubuntu 7.04,  Feisty Fawn, since I described how to add TB2 manually to Ubuntu’s latest creature. Via the Ubuntu-Tutorials I came to this useful info:

“I am a member of the Ubuntu Mozilla Team, we have packaged Thunderbird 2.0 for Feisty, but it is in our testing repositories”:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/PreviewArchives

Here is how it’s done…….

BACK UP YOUR EMAIL (described earlier)

I just did:

rsync -avzr /home/me/.thunderbird/  /media/external_disk/tb2/

Ready? So you add (all this is done as root, which I always set up, or with SUDO if you prefer):

deb http://gnomefreak.youmortals.com/mozilla-testing feisty main

 to:

/etc/apt/sources.list

then you do:

apt-get update

and (where the -s signifies “simulate” to first see what would happen, precaution is almost always a useful measure :)

apt-get install -s mozilla-thunderbird     …… – then if all looks fine, then you do:

apt-get install  mozilla-thunderbird

NOTE: “that in the testing repositories there are also other builds of Mozilla Software, (Firefox 2.0.x pre-release update builds and Firefox 3 Alpha releases too, so please be careful!)).” – which is why you should do this from the command line and not Synaptic or Update Manager this or that. Plain strokes on the keyboard will do the trick. Once you’re done (see below) and have what you need from the repository, then comment it out in the etc/apt/sources.list so that you wont end up with anything do you don’t really want.

—– apt-get gave me this result:

Setting up libnspr4-0d (4.6.6-2.mt1) …
Setting up thunderbird-locale-en-gb (2.0.0.0ubuntu0-1) …
Setting up libnss3-0d (3.11.5-1ubuntu0.mt1) …
Setting up thunderbird (2.0.0.0-0ubuntu3~.mt1) …
Setting up enigmail (0.95.0-0ubuntu1) …
Setting up mozilla-thunderbird-enigmail (0.95.0-0ubuntu1) …
Setting up mozilla-thunderbird (2.0.0.0-0ubuntu3~.mt1) …

—————————————————————–

Then just follow the instructions of the previous TB2 in 7.04 to move your data, in case you’ve been running it in parallel from /opt or elsewhere. IMPORTANT: even though the binary/executable TB2 file is: /usr/bin/thunderbird the installation folder or directory in which this .deb will be looking for or installing its own profile is in:

/home/you/.mozilla-thunderbird/

So that is where you have to place a copy of any profile/identity that you might want to recycle. That’s all folks!

Thanks very much – everything worked perfectly. All my previously installed add-ons & extensions came up fine too.

As of this posting date, I needed to add enigmail to get that installed as:
    apt-get install mozilla-thunderbird enigmail

(same with ‘apt-get -s …’ too, of course)

Eww, youmortals.com is just bringing up an adversquatter. Either the domain expired, or my ISP is doing something sketchy.

Correction. I spoke to gnomefreak, who told me that youmortals.com has been abandoned in favor of launchpad’s Personal Package Archives. So, the new repository:

    http://ppa.dogfood.launchpad.net/mozillateam/ubuntu/

  7. Thunderbird doesn’t’ appear t be on that repository, and the originoal one doesnt’ work! If I find one that does I’ll update this blog…
