Huge park in Madrid city center with miles of paths, lots of statues and monuments. You can rent a rowing boat in the lake or feed the ducks. Go and see the exhibition in Crystal Palace.
Definitely worth a visit when in Madrid and it does not matter whether it is winter or summer. It is beautiful in all seasons.
We visited the park end of the December, day before New Year celebration.

Se ha considerado que el espacio que comprende el que inicialmente fue el recinto del “Real Sitio del Buen Retiro” contiene los valores universales excepcionales que la UNESCO puede tener en cuenta para que Madrid forme parte del Patrimonio Mundial. Esta elección se inscribe en lo que puede considerarse como paisaje urbano y cultural evolutivo.
Felipe IV delimita un gran espacio, más allá de los límites orientales de la ciudad, que va a albergar un conjunto palacial y unos extensos jardines bajo el nombre del “Real Sitio del Buen Retiro”.
Carlos III, bajo el influjo de La Ilustración, va a ser el impulsor, justamente en el borde que separa la ciudad de este Real Sitio, del denominado Paseo del Prado, que se va a formar por un conjunto de actuaciones urbanísticas y arquitectónicas que constituyen uno de los grandes ejemplos internacionales del neoclasicismo: El gabinete de Ciencias Naturales, hoy Museo del Prado, el mejor museo de pintura del mundo; el Jardín Botánico y el Observatorio Astronómico, todos ellos del gran arquitecto madrileño Juan de Villanueva.
Durante el siglo XIX los jardines del Buen Retiro pasan a ser el gran Parque de Madrid, hoy uno de los grandes pulmones verdes de la ciudad.
Entre el Paseo de Prado y el propio parque, crece el barrio de Los Jerónimos, construido al amparo del ensanche de Castro, con edificaciones muy representativas de la arquitectura doméstica madrileña del siglo XIX.
En él se conserva la iglesia de Los Jerónimos, de origen medieval, y el “Salón de Reinos” y el “Casón” del antiguo Palacio del Buen Retiro, y se construyen edificios como la Bolsa de Comercio, el Museo Nacional de Antropología, el Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas y el Palacio de Cibeles, antiguo Edificio de Correos y hoy la sede del propio Ayuntamiento, todos ellos, edificios singulares declarados bienes de interés cultural.
Y en el entorno inmediato se encuentran otros edificios, también declarados bienes de interés cultural, como el Ministerio de Agricultura, el Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, antiguo Hospital de San Carlos del arquitecto Francisco de Sabatini, la estación de Atocha, y la destacada presencia del Museo Thyssen Bornemisza en el antiguo palacio de Villahermosa, así como los grandes monumentos que son el símbolo de la ciudad: la Puerta de Alcalá, obra también de Sabatini, y las fuentes de Cibeles, Neptuno y Atocha que marcan hitos significativos dentro del gran eje representativo que atraviesa Madrid de sur a norte.
Toda esta serie de trazados urbanos, monumentos, jardines y edificios dan forma al gran conjunto monumental que constituye el SITIO DEL RETIRO Y EL PRADO DE MADRID, que puede convertirse en el gran símbolo emblemático que la ciudad necesita.

El Casón del Buen Retiro de Madrid abre sus puertas para que podamos contemplar, entre otras obras, la bóveda de Luca Giordano restaurada. El Museo del Prado celebra la reciente reforma con una exposición y jornadas de puertas abiertas, sólo hasta el 4 de mayo. Giordano fue un rápido pintor que buscaba hacerse rico, y lo consiguió; que quiso hacerse pasar por Rivera, y lo consiguió; y que se atrevió a firmar alguna de sus obras como Rafael. El Retiro Park, Madrid (Spain) Parque del Buen Retiro, (España)
Madrid (/məˈdrɪd/, Spanish: [maˈðɾið], locally: [maˈðɾiθ, -ˈðɾi]) is a south-western European city and the capital and largest municipality of Spain. The population of the city is almost 3.2 million[4] and that of the Madrid metropolitan area, around 7 million. The city is located on the Manzanares River in the centre of both the country and the Community of Madrid (which comprises the city of Madrid, its conurbation and extended suburbs and villages); this community is bordered by the autonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political, economic and cultural centre of Spain.
More than 250,000 hectares make the city of Madrid one of the European capitals with most green areas. One more fact: 248,000 trees can be found on its streets.
Of these green areas, the most famous one is surely El Retiro Park, it covers 118 hectares However, this is not the only green area to be found in a region with a wide variety of parks and gardens. In the capital can be found Campo del Moro, El Capricho garden, Monte de El Pardo, the Botanical Garden, Casa de Campo, Dehesa de la Villa park and Juan Carlos I park. Outside the city are the internationally famous Aranjuez Royal Gardens.
El Retiro gradually became the heart of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, the monument to Alfonso XIII was erected next to the pond. Countless statues, fountains and commemorative monuments have filled the park and converted it into an open-air sculpture museum. Worthy of special mention among them are the Artichoke Fountain, designed by Ventura Rodríguez ant the Fallen Angel, peculiar in that main statue is dedicated to the devil. The thirties and forties witnessed the creation of new gardens attributed to Chief Gardener Cecilio Rodriguez who designed and built "the rose bed" and his namesake gardens.

The Buen Retiro Park (Spanish: Parque del Buen Retiro, literally "Park of the Pleasant Retreat", or simply El Retiro) is one of the largest parks of the city of Madrid, Spain. The park belonged to the Spanish Monarchy until the late 19th century, when it became a public park.
Location
The Buen Retiro Park is a large and popular 1.4 km2 (350 acres) park at the edge of the city center, very close to the Puerta de Alcalá and not far from the Prado Museum. A magnificent park, filled with beautiful sculpture and monuments, galleries, a peaceful lake and host to a variety of events, it is one of Madrid's premier attractions. The park is entirely surrounded by the present-day city.
History of the park and palace
In 1505, at the time of Isabella I (r. 1474–1504) the Jeronimos monastery was moved from an unsuitable location elsewhere to the present site of San Jeronimo el Real Church, and a new monastery built in Isabelline Gothic style. The royal family had a retreat built as part of the church.

Buin-e Olya
Buin-e Olya (Persian: بوئين عليا, also Romanized as Bū'īn-e ‘Olyā; also known as Bīān Darreh, Buen, Bū’īn, Bū’īn-e Bālā, Būyen-e Bālā, and Būyen-e ‘Olyā) is a village in Buin Rural District, Nanur District, Baneh County, Kurdistan Province, Iran. Buen Retiro Palace
Buen Retiro Palace (Spanish: Palacio del Buen Retiro) in Madrid was a large palace complex designed by the architect Alonso Carbonell (c. 1590–1660) and built on the orders of Philip IV of Spain as a secondary residence and place of recreation (hence its name). It was built in what was then the eastern limits of the city of Madrid. Today what little remains of its buildings and gardens forms the Retiro Park.
History
Philip IV used to stay occasionally in some rooms annexed to the monastery of San Jerónimo el Real (close to the current location of the Prado Museum, which received the name of the Royal Quarters. The reason for these frequent visits could be that the so-called Planet King particularly enjoyed walking in the attached farm, property of the Count-Duke of Olivares, his royal favourite and minister.
Olivares, with the intention of pleasing the monarch, planned in 1629 and started in 1630 the construction of a series of offices and pavilions as an extension of the Royal Quarters, which ended up forming the Buen Retiro Palace. The building of the palace was not something planned from the start, but occurred over a period of seven years (until 1640 during which further additions were built successively). Once finished, the palace consisted of more than 20 buildings and two large open squares used for court entertainments and various other acts. The palace complex was surrounded by a large expanse of gardens and ponds, giving it a playful character.

In the capital can be found Campo del Moro, El Capricho garden, Monte de El Pardo, the Botanical Garden, Casa de Campo, Dehesa de la Villa park and Juan Carlos I park. Outside the city are the internationally famous Aranjuez Royal Gardens. El Retiro gradually became the heart of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, the monument to Alfonso XIII was erected next to the pond. Countless statues, fountains and commemorative monuments have filled the park and converted it into an open-air sculpture museum. Worthy of special mention among them are the Artichoke Fountain, designed by Ventura Rodríguez ant the Fallen Angel, peculiar in that main statue is dedicated to the devil. The thirties and forties witnessed the creation of new gardens attributed to Chief Gardener Cecilio Rodriguez who designed and built "the rose bed" and his namesake gardens. El Museo del Prado celebra la reciente reforma con una exposición y jornadas de puertas abiertas, sólo hasta el 4 de mayo. Durante el siglo XIX los jardines del Buen Retiro pasan a ser el gran Parque de Madrid, hoy uno de los grandes pulmones verdes de la ciudad.
Entre el Paseo de Prado y el propio parque, crece el barrio de Los Jerónimos, construido al amparo del ensanche de Castro, con edificaciones muy representativas de la arquitectura doméstica madrileña del siglo XIX.
En él se conserva la iglesia de Los Jerónimos, de origen medieval, y el “Salón de Reinos” y el “Casón” del antiguo Palacio del Buen Retiro, y se construyen edificios como la Bolsa de Comercio, el Museo Nacional de Antropología, el Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas y el Palacio de Cibeles, antiguo Edificio de Correos y hoy la sede del propio Ayuntamiento, todos ellos, edificios singulares declarados bienes de interés cultural.
Y en el entorno inmediato se encuentran otros edificios, también declarados bienes de interés cultural, como el Ministerio de Agricultura, el Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, antiguo Hospital de San Carlos del arquitecto Francisco de Sabatini, la estación de Atocha, y la destacada presencia del Museo Thyssen Bornemisza en el antiguo palacio de Villahermosa, así como los grandes monumentos que son el símbolo de la ciudad: la Puerta de Alcalá, obra también de Sabatini, y las fuentes de Cibeles, Neptuno y Atocha que marcan hitos significativos dentro del gran eje representativo que atraviesa Madrid de sur a norte.

El Retiro Park, Madrid (Spain) Parque del Buen Retiro, (España)
Madrid (/məˈdrɪd/, Spanish: [maˈðɾið], locally: [maˈðɾiθ, -ˈðɾi]) is a south-western European city and the capital and largest municipality of Spain. The population of the city is almost 3.2 million[4] and that of the Madrid metropolitan area, around 7 million. It is the third-largest city in the European Union, after London and Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the third-largest in the European Union after Paris and London. The city spans a total of 604.3 km2 (233.3 sq mi).
The city is located on the Manzanares River in the centre of both the country and the Community of Madrid (which comprises the city of Madrid, its conurbation and extended suburbs and villages); this community is bordered by the autonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political, economic and cultural centre of Spain.
More than 250,000 hectares make the city of Madrid one of the European capitals with most green areas. One more fact: 248,000 trees can be found on its streets.
Of these green areas, the most famous one is surely El Retiro Park, it covers 118 hectares However, this is not the only green area to be found in a region with a wide variety of parks and gardens. In the capital can be found Campo del Moro, El Capricho garden, Monte de El Pardo, the Botanical Garden, Casa de Campo, Dehesa de la Villa park and Juan Carlos I park. Outside the city are the internationally famous Aranjuez Royal Gardens.
El Retiro gradually became the heart of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, the monument to Alfonso XIII was erected next to the pond. Countless statues, fountains and commemorative monuments have filled the park and converted it into an open-air sculpture museum. Worthy of special mention among them are the Artichoke Fountain, designed by Ventura Rodríguez ant the Fallen Angel, peculiar in that main statue is dedicated to the devil. The thirties and forties witnessed the creation of new gardens attributed to Chief Gardener Cecilio Rodriguez who designed and built "the rose bed" and his namesake gardens.

The historic electric train takes a route north from the capital across the plains, winding through mountains and 13 tunnels of the Serra de Tramuntana, finally ending in the large railway station of the northern town of Sóller.
Palma (/ˈpɑːlmə/ or /ˈpɑːmə/, Catalan: [ˈpalmə], Spanish: [ˈpalma]), in full Palma de Mallorca,[1] is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain.[2] It is situated on the south coast of the island Majorca on the Bay of Palma. Hola y bienvenidos a Madrid. This week we are in the Spanish capital and we are going to show you twenty five of the best things to do in the city.
Final thoughts on your time in Madrid. Well, I really enjoyed the city. And I really found that it is super walk-able. We were here for 10 days and we hardly had to take the metro at all. We just took the bus once when we were visiting the stadium but the rest of the time we were able to walk wherever we needed to go. And also I think it is a great city for art lovers. There are so many galleries and museums to check out. And a lot of them are free in the evening. So keep that in mind.
And now it is your turn. What did you think of Madrid? You know what? I absolutely loved Madrid. It is a city that just really clicked with me. We have a lot of friends that are living here long term and prior to coming here I had no idea like why would someone want to come to Madrid? Now I totally get it. I love the culture, I love the food, I love the nightlife. Everything is really cheap. I go to the grocery store and I can get a one liter thing of wine for just over a Euro. It is just a really affordable fun city to be in. And it is somewhere I hope I have a chance to come back to again soon.
And that is a wrap of our time in Madrid! We had a splendid time and were truly sad to say goodbye to the city, but that just means we'll have to come back again. If you have any travel tips for Madrid, feel free to share those in the comments below.
