Latest initiative under joint ITTO/CBD programme—a new project to support sustainable forest management (SFM) and biodiversity conservation in Africa
Yokohama/Montreal, 25 January 2012 –The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Government of Japan today signed a letter of understanding for funding of 278 million Japanese yen (US$ 3.6 million) to implement a large capacity-building project to support five Congo Basin countries to provide training on sustainable forest management (SFM) and biodiversity.

Global alliance of cities and governments to save biodiversity of the Mediterranean region
Montreal, 19 January 2012– For the first time, local authorities and representatives of government met in Montpellier from 17 to 19 January 2012 to implement the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, including the 20 Aichi Targets, in the Mediterranean region. Eighteen countries from the Mediterranean region, including 21 participants representing a total of 15 cities, as well as three mayors, assembled in Montpellier at the first subregional workshop on capacity-building on strategies and action plans for biodiversity for the region as a whole.

The Green Wave to support forest rehabilitation in the devastated region of Tohoku, Japan

Guinea and Morocco sign Nagoya Protocol on genetic resources
Montreal, 4 January 2012 – Guinea and Morocco, on 9 December 2011, became the latest signatories to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).This brings the total number of signatures to 70, with one ratification (Gabon). The Nagoya Protocol was opened for signature in February 2011. The Protocol will enter into force 90 days after deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification.

Partnership forged between Japan Committee for the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity
Kanazawa, Japan, 20 December 2011– The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Japan Committee for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCNJ) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a view to promoting greater awareness amongst civil society organisations in Japan and abroad and join forces for the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Targets.

2011-2020 United Nations Biodiversity Decade Launched in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan
Montreal, 19 December 2011 – A future of life in harmony with nature is possible, if the world takes action now. The United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB) was launched in Kanazawa, Japan, on 17 December 2011, in a ceremony organized by the United Nations University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Japan, Ishikawa Prefecture and Kanazawa City, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

UN Decade on Biodiversity launched at Meso-American workshop on National Biodiversity Strategies
Montreal, 16 December 2011 – Costa Rica was the host for the launch of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity for the Central American Region, setting in motion a process to build a future of life in harmony with nature. In addition to the launch, 40 participants from nine countries attended a regional capacity-building workshop on the updating and revising of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) for countries of Meso-America, held in San José, Costa Rica, from 28 November to 2 December 2011.

Rio+20 conference should capitalize on the values that forests offer to sustainable development

UN Biodiversity Chief Signs Memorandum of Understanding with World Future Council

Latvia becomes the first country to ratify the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress
Montreal, 7 December 2011 – On 30 November 2011, Latvia became the first country to ratify the Nagoya - Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The first ratification comes just over a year after the Supplementary Protocol was adopted at a historic biodiversity summit held in October 2010 in Nagoya, Japan.

Scientific body of global biodiversity treaty adopts eight recommendations
