Rosalind Russell Trivia
Rosalind Russell Trivia
Tall brunette leading lady who hit her stride in the 1940s playing wisecracking, no-nonsense career women in a string of breezy comedies. Entering films in 1935, she was briefly typecast as upper crust, sometimes British "other women", but quickly established herself in leading roles (especially with her performances in such fine films as Dorothy Arzner`s "Craig`s Wife" 1936 and King Vidor`s "The Citadel" 1938). She really achieved full star status, though, with her memorable turn as the sly, bitchy girlfriend of Norma Shearer in the all-star, all-female catfight, "The Women" (1939), as ringmastered by George Cukor. A highly talented, charismatic and appealing actress, she excelled in Howard Hawks` rapid-fire "His Girl Friday" (1940), opposite Cary Grant, and in "My Sister Eileen" (1942), in a role she would later reprise on the musical stage. Her straight dramatic roles were generally less successful, though two of her four Oscar nominations were in very serious if not entirely successful "prestige" films for screenwriter-director Dudley Nichols: "Sister Kenny" (1946) and "Mourning Becomes Electra" (1947). Rosalind Russell Tribute
Rosalind Russell Tribute
I made this tribute for a dear friend Nadezhda (RosalindRosebud) who's been so kind to me to share the wonderful movies of roz... this one is for you and to all roz' lovers... i hope you like it... A witty and stylish lead actress of stage and screen, Russell tended to play successful career women who were skilled in repartee. She trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, then began her stage career in her early '20s. She debuted onscreen in 1934 and immediately had a very busy film career. At first appearing in routine films, in the '40s she began to specialize in light, sophisticated comedies, for which she had a unique talent. In the '50s her career briefly declined and she went to Broadway, where she starred in three successful productions. One of these was Auntie Mame, later made into a film in which she reprised her stage role (1958). She went on to appear in a handful of films before she was struck by crippling arthritis. Known for her charity work, in 1972 she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, a special Oscar. Russell received four Academy Award nominations during her career. She was married to producer Frederick Brisson. She authored an autobiography, Life is a Banquet. ~ All Movie Guide
