Wax Fang

Wax Fang is an American rock band from Louisville, Kentucky, United States, that combines elements of classic, psychedelic, progressive, and experimental rock music, as well as electronic and folk. The band consists of Scott Carney and Jacob Heustis.

History

Black And Endless Night

The debut LP, Black & Endless Night, was originally released as a solo album by Scott Carney in December 2005. After Jacob Heustis (bass) and Kevin Ratterman (drums) began performing with Carney, the band began playing under the moniker Wax Fang and Black & Endless Night was subsequently re-released as a Wax Fang album on their own label, Don't Panic Records.

La La Land

After touring with My Morning Jacket in the fall of 2006, the band entered Ardent Studios with engineer Doug Easley (Easley McCain Recording) (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Guided by Voices) to begin recording their next album, La La Land. The band then opened for My Morning Jacket on New Year's Eve 2006 at The Fillmore in San Francisco.

In 2007, Wax Fang opened for Spoon, Black Mountain, Man Man, The Whigs and The Features. La La Land was released in November 2007.

Fang

A fang is a long, pointed tooth. In mammals, a fang is a canine tooth, used for biting and tearing flesh. In snakes, it is a venom-injecting tooth (see snake venom). Spiders also have fangs, which are part of the chelicerae.

Fangs are most common in carnivores or omnivores, but some herbivores, such as fruit bats, have them as well. They are generally used to hold or swiftly kill prey, such as in large cats. Omnivorous animals, such as bears, use their fangs when hunting fish or other prey, but they are not needed for consuming fruit. Some apes also have fangs, which they use for threats and fighting. However, the relatively short canines of humans are not considered to be fangs.

Fangs in religion, mythology and legend

Certain mythological and legendary creatures such as dragons, gargoyles and yakshas are commonly depicted with prominent fangs. The fangs of vampires are one of their defining characteristics.

The deities of certain religions such as Hinduism have fangs. One example is Chamunda, as well as Kali and Yama in some iconographic representations. These are an indication of their fierce aspect. Fangs are also common among demonic figures such as Rangda in Balinese Hinduism.

Wax

Waxes are a diverse class of organic compounds that are hydrophobic, malleable solids near ambient temperatures. They include higher alkanes and lipids, typically with melting points above about 40 °C (104 °F), melting to give low viscosity liquids. Waxes are insoluble in water but soluble in organic, nonpolar solvents. Natural waxes of different types are produced by plants and animals and occur in petroleum.

Types

Waxes are organic compounds that characteristically consist of long alkyl chains. Natural waxes may contain esters of carboxylic acids and long chain alcohols or mixtures of unsubstituted and substituted hydrocarbons, such as higher alkanes, long chain fatty acids and primary alcohols. Synthetic waxes are long-chain hydrocarbons lacking functional groups.

Plant and animal waxes

Waxes are synthesized by many plants and animals. Those of animal origin typically consist of wax esters derived from a variety of carboxylic acids and fatty alcohols. In waxes of plant origin characteristic mixtures of unesterified hydrocarbons may predominate over esters. The composition depends not only on species, but also on geographic location of the organism.

Scott Carney

Scott Carney (born July 9, 1978) is an American investigative journalist. He reported from Chennai, India between 2006–2009 but currently resides in Colorado. He contributes stories on a variety of medical, technological and ethical issues to Wired Magazine, Mother Jones (magazine), Playboy, Foreign Policy, Details (magazine) and National Public Radio. His first book The Red Market: On the trail of the world's organ brokers, bone thieves, blood farmers and child traffickers was published by William Morrow/Harper Collins in June 2011. His second book A Death on Diamond Mountain: A True Story of Obsession, Madness and the Path to Enlightenment came out in 2015. in 2015 Carney is an outspoken advocate of freelance writers and writes frequently on his blog about the struggles that freelance journalists face both in the field and navigating the business side of the profession. He is unusual in that he argues that magazines often have exceptionally high profits, and the low pay and contract terms that writers get are better attributed to exploitative business practices instead of a poor overall market for the written word. In Carney founded the website WordRates in order to provide journalists a new way to sell and market their work. Carney holds a number of academic and professional appointments including as a contributing editor at Wired, a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University, and as a judge for the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism. He graduated from Kenyon College in 2000 and dropped out of a PhD in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in order to pursue journalism.
